I don’t mean to keep picking at it because you are making your point with civility, but I just don’t think that strategy can work in practice with how the business has evolved. Fulmer would probably have more credibility to pull it off than Currie, Hart, et al though.

Interesting. I actually wonder if this may be the next phase in college football. I don’t see many programs that are firing their way to success, and coaching contracts and payouts are getting outrageous. I think at some point you just have to pick a guy and stick with him.

The fans may bail early but if that guy starts winning they will come back in droves. Take the long view!

Our best years happened when we had stability with Majors and Fulmer. We can absolutely win a national title in the modern era but I just am not convinced we can do it quickly like Bama under Saban or Florida under Meyer (or like Georgia almost did last year). Our lack of instate talent hurts us most with our depth. We can match them in the starting 22 but routinely have issues beyond that. We just can’t fill in the holes well with local players - shows up most on OL and DL, I think.

that probably looks right, though i'm still hoping Shamburger figures it out and sticks around. i have always thought he was good.

I would say you could add Bailey, J Jones, Reid, Page, Labruzza, Latrell Williams, and Crosby to the list as candidates off the top of my head.

Best I remember Saban got rid of his OC/QB coach at Alabama after year 1. It wouldn’t stun me if Pruitt did it.
He had no relationship or experience with Applewhite tho...he took a flyer. Don’t think it’s the same situation.

Pruitt’s only experience with Helton is when Helton recruited Hoover, right? I don’t know that he will do anything with Helton. Pruitt just doesn’t strike me as someone who will wait to change if he doesn’t think it is working.

[ I know I argued at the old Knoxville Sentinel site about firing Fulmer, and I was not happy about Kiffin, but I was very much in the minority. I liked Dooley and probably stuck with him longer than the majority. Butch started getting on my nerves with how he was more about himself being a star, and gimmicks than our football team. (The third down song, The big surprise that we have different team leaders, His "butch-isms", wanting to have the most followers on Twitter, Team numbers, not doing game recaps on his show) I really was just completely done after the Georgia game last year.

Pruitt was tight with Neill Callaway at UAB when Tyson’s father was the OC and is super tight with Friend who worked with both. I don’t disagree that he wouldn’t hesitate to jettison something that ain’t working, but his benefit of the doubt extends more than Saban with Applewhite imo.

Gotcha. For our I sake I hope it works out with Helton.

A casual fan doesn't know how to, for example, tell the difference between a base defense, nickel, or dime package.

A casual fan can, however, yell that the OC should have run or pass in a given situation.

It's so much easier to critique the OC because of that.

I also think this has a lot to do with it. It's easy to see an offensive play that doesn't work. Plus most people follow the ball on a play so they're watching the offense on any given play. Same reason the quarterback tends to get most of the blame (and sometimes credit).

On defense, I think individual players tend to get more blame. When defensive backs and sometimes linebackers get beat, it's very evident. Missed tackles are easy to spot. Again going back to the player.

We have a lot of offensive gurus on this board. I don't mean to give Helton a blank check, but it gets tiring to see the constant harping.

People seemed to be pretty positive of DeBord once they got past the swim coach theme.

It helps that they were putting up huge numbers at times, but even in the midst of that, he'd get hammered for all kinds of things.

Just part of watching football and interacting with other fans, I guess.

Great points on defense. How many times have we all heard someone blame a player for getting beat on a long pass play, when in fact that player was making up ground on a blown assignment by someone else?

My critique of Debord was that he couldn't figure out how to get Hurd and Kamara on the field at the same time. Doesn't take the most creative mind in the world to think, "Gee, my very versatile 'back up' runningback is better than any of my receivers behind Jennings and Malone, how about we cause some mismatches by moving that guy around all over the place?"

Instead, they had him over there on the sideline sipping gatorade hoping for a few carries for a good chunk of the season.

Think a lot of that had more to do with bozo

Wonder how much Butch had to do with that.
