I’m still so very disappointed in Pruitts defense against Mizzou. Can’t shake it. They had guy open all night. Underneath, over the top (my word where’s the speed 6 and 20?) drags, screens... we looked woefully out coached. Not sure I can give my man a pass. Have to do better. He can’t let a great QB like that have easy decisions. That’s what worries me, Shurmer is a good QB. When calling my shot, I typically lean toward the team with the better QB... afraid of this.
Lock was on the money yesterday...sometimes there’s nothing you can’t do about it...bad matchup for us.

Our blitzes were comical too. We continue to have guys get stonewalled.. it’s like they forget they have an advantage at running full speed against an outmanned front. You can dip, spin, run around, anything... stupid.

What it comes down to, imo, teams with above average DL, that can run the ball decently and have good QBs are going to beat UT, everytime, this year. Like Georgia, Bama, WV and Mizzou. Florida has 2 of the 3 but turnovers killed us. Should have beat USCjr, but the QB and running game also gives them 2 of the 3, for the recipe of beating UT, at least in that particular game

It’s tough to know the actual play call. But there was a few times Buchanan was blitzing over the middle like a LB. Which was really confusing to me since it was plays where we only sent 5. Gary even called it a LB blitz one of the times, which left the middle of the field wide open. There’s zero chance Buchanan(or the far majority of DB’s) can win a one on one vs a guard. At first I thought it was miscommunication or Buchanan missing his assignment but we ran it atleast twice so I’m thinking it was the actual call. Of course Pruitt coulda been betting run and just guessed wrong

We don't have the speed on this roster to contain the edges against a team like Mizzou. That said, the defense was doing ok until the offense became a disaster. A team built like Mizzou with a QB like Lock is always going to get big yardage.

You think the last two guys didn’t get a fair chance?

Sorry I’m not being clear. The last two guys definitely were let go at the right time. I have more in mind a guy that just gets us routinely to bowl games and recruits top 20ish classes every year. We need stability before we can return to greatness is my point. I’m convinced Tennessee is not a plug-and-play quick fix program where we can expect to win big in a short period of time. It’s notable to me our mediocre coaching hires never seem to win 10 games in any season. Florida, Bama, Georgia, LSU, A&M and Auburn all seem to spit out at least one 10 win season regardless of how good their coach is. We just aren’t on their level honestly. We can still win big but we have to have stability and catch breaks. And that takes patience. That’s really my point.

I could be wrong though!

Out coached by Dooley.... there’s some irony there

The whole staff still has a lot to prove to me. I've posted this many times but I think this staff is not used to having to play with this level of talent. They're used to having superior talent than their opponents and they're struggling to overcome being at a talent disadvantage. Add to that a bunch of guys that have become adjusted to losing, mentally, they're in uncharted waters.

Quicker they flip the roster the better. Really all that matters is recruiting at this point. A top 10 class with 25 new guys, who aren’t used to losing, is just what the doctor ordered.

I agree. It always comes down to recruiting. I think with this staff it's especially true. Not sure they'll ever get that "more with less thing down".

Oh I doubt that. Pruitt is known for developing underrated 3 star diamonds in his career. Development takes longer than one season. Go ask UGA fans about what he did with some under the radar guys.

I think you’re being overly critical of a guy who was handed a bad roster full of guys who are OK with losing. But that’s just my opinion.

Don’t forget before the season started Vegas and most people picked the vols to go 5-7 or worse. Only optimists like myself picked UT to make a bowl.

I mean potentially getting 6 wins (7 with a bowl win) is pretty good with meh talent and zero depth while having one of the toughest schedules in the country.

Can't remember the last time we had a good blitzing defense.

Eh it’s still too early to say that fairly, IMO.

This staff is going through a lot of firsts and still has plenty ahead of them. We’ve still gotta see what kind of adjustments and/or improvements they can make as coaches with one season under their belts as well as how the players develop in year two of these systems. What kinda of step forward they can get out of a lot of these guys in year two will be more telling about them than what we’ve seen this year, IMO.

Are you claiming GA's roster was anywhere close to this roster from a talent perspective? GA's "under the radar" guys are our 5 stars. I agree the culture is bad and can't be fixed in one year. My problem with this staff has nothing to do with the win/loss column, it has to do with progression. This team has progressed very little from game one. They commit the same silly penalties. They can't block, can't tackle, can't cover, can't pressure the qb, and really cant run the ball. The offense is as vanilla as day one. They are as predictable as rain in seattle. To me they look like what they are, coaches finding their way for the first time in their respective positions.

I'm in no way calling for anyone's head. He needs time to improve the roster, get his type of guy in. However, I've seen nothing that tells me this guy or his staff will bring the Vols back to relevancy. I'm cheering for him as hard as anyone and by no means have I given up on him.

Recruiting will tell the story and likely will determine his ultimate success here.

This. Although, I'd change the 'one of' to 'the'.
