Tuesday Practice Thread: Charlotte Week

So, if both qb’s would’ve got hurt, then Shrout would’ve played? What’s happened to McBride?
Could be one of couple reasons. First is the obvious w/ Shrout higher ceiling, and second, Pruitt really does seem like he wants to maximize player experiences and give folks opportunities. Could be that McBride not seeing much in QB rotations in practice, and wants to give him some time in live action against the 1's, see how he's progressed, and keep him sharp, in case he's called into action. Though Shrout obviously probably better talent, I'd probably trust McBride more at this point in a game situation. He looked pretty composed and confident last year, but he may very well transfer.

Hasn't been too much discussion about TKjr coming back. I was glad to see him out there for a full game, especially for all he's been thru with injuries and it's his senior year. I didn't really pay attention to his game, but saw he had a solid stat line. He may be a step slower than others, but he's always had a knack for being around the ball for some key interceptions his first two years. He's had some injuries, but if he's back close to full speed, I'd think having a veteran back there down the stretch would be a big positive for us?

"The Vols have tried Shawn Shamburger, Theo Jackson and Todd Kelly Jr. at the safety spot alongside Nigel Warrior with varying degrees of success. It's worth noting Kelly went the distance against South Carolina. It was Kelly who was working alongside Warrior during the secondary's pattern-matching and coverage work against a scout team on Tuesday. "

Excluding his fumble issues , Banks is the best running back on the roster. The fumbles can be coached out of him.

Your “plans” must be really inflexible. Banks is going to be a linebacker, but he has a lot to learn before he gets on the field in that role. In the meantime, use him on special teams and spot at running back where he can contribute the rest of the season. About the extent of the science involved.
So, you're saying, that there are more colors in the world than just black and white?

Pruitt is looking clueless with his handling of Banks.

Comon man. One bad plan is better than switching between 5 good ones constantly. That goes for everyone.
No he's not. He gave him a good honest look and probably realized that 215 lbs is way too light to contribute at MLB this year most likely. He didn't miss any development at rb as he fumbles every 4 or 5 touches, something we couldn't afford the last 2 games. He'll likely be #5 in the RBs line but still get 4-5 touches this week. If he proves he can hold onto the ball earn a little trust then he'll likely get 3-5 touches a game the rest of the season. Nothing lost it appears to me.

Zero chance a guy averaging 4 ypc and fumbles every 4 to 5 touches will ever be considered the best running back on ANY roster. He's a couple of years away and that's if he stays at the rb position. If he puts on 20-25 lbs he's headed to MLB next year.

I wish we had some SEC caliber safeties. It's, among many things, truly hard to watch with this group. They do nothing consistently well. To not cover, tackle, take good angles, hang onto picks, or be in the right spot as our last line of defense drives me almost as crazy as some of these momentum killing dumbass penalties we keep getting. Man I miss speed and the ability to knock people backwards while tackling. This group rarely hits anyone and stops them from falling forward for additional yardage.

CJP said JB asked to move to . He said he didn't play guys at positions they didn't want to play at LB. Maybe JB looked at film and realized RB was a better position for him self. That's what I'm going with.

Shuffling the deck to try and see if he can not get dealt a garbage hand.

Not as fast as Chandler but has the best instincts. Chandler is a good receiver but I'm not impressed with his ability as a runner.
Way more upside with Banks than Chandler.

That's an interesting opinion for sure. I'd be curious to know exactly what it is about Chandler's ability as a runner that doesn't impress you since Chandler's ability as a running back is arguably the best of any running back on the team. Tim Jordan has really stepped up his game and makes a strong case too. Carlin Fils-Aime has elevated his already lengthy skill set as a running back as well as averages over 6 yards a carry with a touchdown with only 3 touches so far this season, and Madre London also averages over 5 yards a carry if I remember right and ran for a lot of first downs on third down. Yes, Banks has a lot of upside, but that doesn't take anything away from Chandler who has already established himself or the other backs who are showing they're just as ready and willing to compete.

No matter how it all shakes out, in my opinion, we've got a talented group of running backs who play hard and like they're eager to earn opportunities to help the team win however they are called on to do so when their number is called. It looks obvious to me that running backs Coach Chris Weinke is doing a fine job developing their talent. I am sure Banks will continue to get the opportunity to drill points of contact fundamental ball security drills so often and so regularly until protecting the football with correct technique becomes a reinforced habit he chooses to stay mindful of even though he'll eventually drill it to the point he does it without needing to think about it, because it's so important to his continued development. I am just as impressed as you are about his talent running the ball which is why it is so important that he demonstrates he has mastered the points of contact so that all his otherwise obvious talent for the position doesn't go to waste. It's not anything that happens without the drilling with emphasis, so we'll know he's got the technique down when the fumbles stop and not at any point before that proof. Yes, it's fun to dream about what it would be like to already be at point B without starting at point A first, but that's just not the process. I'm willing to bet Coach Weinke has some tips to take that weakness and transform it into one of his biggest strengths so that a case of "the drops" never has the chance to rear its ugly head again for Banks or any of the backs.

On that note, it was impressive how the team didn't commit a single turnover vs. South Carolina. A lot of teams shoot themselves in the foot with turnovers and penalties that cost them games against teams that have no business beating them. Even though we lost the penalties battle last Saturday, I'm happy that it looks like Tennessee is developing into a team that will be so disciplined in the fundamentals of mistake-free football, that the staff, team, and fans take pride in it as one of the trademarks of Tennessee Volunteers football under Coach Pruitt and his staff. That's when the fun really begins with beating teams favored to win (like the victory over Auburn already this season) and make a point out of doing it as consistently if not more consistently than any other team in the country. I like what Coach Pruitt said in the press conference about making the other team earn it when it comes to any success another team gets against Tennessee.

It’s not the weight. He’s at least 225. He was 215 at the beginning of his senior year. He just doesn’t know the position so the rest of this season is about developing him there AND getting production from him elsewhere.
