Just behind the Vols' Bench

So after being in Fitzgerald's S&C program for 10 months, 2/3 of the way through the season, the defense can't muster 21 minutes of game-time in October night temps without getting utterly gassed?

Not sure we can blame Butch and company for that problem at this point.

No need to blame anyone. We knew there would be growing pains while switching to the 3-4. Same reason Smart went only 8-4 in year one with a loaded roster against a weak schedule.

Considering offense played well last night aside from penalties, there was absolutely no excuse for our D to be gassed.

Quit acting like SC is some deep, amazing team. Cause they're not.

We lost to a terrible team last night, no use in sugarcoating it. I'm sick of the moral victory nonsense.

And I know the delusional JG nuts will be in soon claiming completion percentage and toughness and heart. I’ve heard it all guys. I love JG but if you can’t see by now that he’s hurting our chances of victory then you never will. So I’ll go ahead and say agree to disagree.

Well, you do drink and post...........

Sitting in section 19 behind the Vols' bench yesterday evening, we UT fans and some very nice SCjr fans watched last night's hard-fought game with an additional dimension than that of some of these dubious posters who're assigning blame for such a disappointing outcome. UT's excessive TOP would've been an asset if only our guys had been able to spell those OL men who, by the fourth quarter, were so spent they could barely even stand up. To a very similar degree, UT's entire defensive squad was totally gassed, as well. All of those who witnessed this game...fans from both schools...couldn't help but notice and comment on the debacle on our sideline; that of a totally exhausted bunch of Vols trying to hold on against an obviously deeper squad of equally determined gamecocks. We had this game all the way until....until...yes, that's until, a drearily lack of substitutions on UT's O and D units finally began slowing our fellas down. This isn't just my view, let me remind y'all. This is what those football fans pulling from both sides noticed at the actual "scene of the crime." If you want to disagree, then at least first explain from where you observed this game. IMHO, the future is very bright in Big Orange Country...just the way it's rolling.

Thanks for sharing OP. They don't normally show any of that on screen. Certainly interesting observations.

You’re putting it on the receivers?! JG missed Palmer alone FOUR times. Ball wasn’t even touchable let alone catchable.
It was awful. People think a QB throwing a backfield qualifies for being a QB. Defenses will destroy Tennessee. Load the box and knock out the run. Helton installed a great game plan considering what he was working with. On the other hand if the OP and his friends think JG is the future of Tennessee quarter backing then that is what is wrong with this picture.

Nice level headed post. I almost feel like someone foreshadowed this.

Rumph: Vols need 'to get some more players in here'

I sat behind the bench also, but higher up. I saw a game that we should have won. Does Uscjr have more depth? Yea, they do, but our players seemed different the 2nd half. Offense looked good, but the false starts, personal fouls, some bad passes killed us. Defense didnt seem to be the keyed in second half, flat. Maybe they were gassed, i dont know. When Usc went to a hurry up offense, we couldnt keep up. Tale of 2 halves, but that was a winnable game.

C'mon. Obliging offers? There was hardly anyone left when Butch was fired. A bunch of guys jumped back on as soon as we hired someone not named Schiano, but CJP was in no way obliged to take them and he tried to recruit over a lot of them.
Many he did not recruit, some he did. It's called doing the right thing when you didn't have to. To NO fault of their own, they would have been out on their own.

So...what you're saying is...

We NEED better players...and MORE of them...??!!

We need 2 more recruiting classes full, then an additional couple of years for them to mature and marinate,,

We controlled TOP. Dominant, in fact.

Told my son as we were watching the game, our Defense should stay fresh with all these long 7 minute sustained drives. Something Butch used to kill us with.....the hurry up and punt offense.

No excuse for the for the defense to be gassed. None.
Probably didn't get their orange slices at halftime.

The defense played well enough for us to win if we had a QB that could complete more than a screen pass. The only reason it was close is because we have one of the best WR corps in the conference. Not because of QB play.

You're f**kin with me, right? This can't be a serious post.. You really shouldn't drink and post...

You don't lift during the season to grow if you are playing. OL who red shirt will so they can grow into SEC linemen but we haven't even had that like a good program because of having to play young guys instead of an entire year lifting. Not taking OL and taking undersized guys has killed us. But FF guys, just keep showing how stupid you really are when it comes to football. Your not playing X box in real big boy football.

Thankfully you noticed the hurry up which can really get you gassed quick on the DL when you can't substitute due to speed of play or because you just don't have the guys to make wholesale subs.

Guys - the whole team isn’t very good save the RBs and WRs. Our OL and DL are weak, LBs rarely make a stop, none of the DBs can cover squat, and our QB play is spotty at best.

So wonder why we stink?

All of our offensive drives were fairly long and usc drives were fairly short. I don't see how our d-line could've been that gassed. Just my observation. I can see why the o-line was gassed, with no subs, but the d-line got manhandled after the first 25 minutes and got no pressure on usc.

We had several long time consuming drives but apparently all it did was tire out our offense. Go figure.

You people crack me up. No matter how many times JG stands still like a freakin monument waiting for a strip sack on a key down you’re still gonna cling to his otherworldly screen pass ability.

I guarantee KC wouldn’t eat sacks and fumble the ball like JG.

But it doesn’t matter “cause he’s tough as nails by god!”
Did I get it right?

Spare me the "you people" bullsh!t. I've never been a JG apologist. I think he lacks certain 'intangibles' you see in good/great QBs. That being said, I'm not going to blame him for last nights loss. It's NEVER one guys fault and he did more than enough to win that game if the defense just shows up in the second half. Either your dislike/hate for JG is severely biasing your opinion or you're just plain stupid. You figure it out. Peace.....

I was across the field from you behind the other bench. Definitely right about our D-line. They had nothing in the tank in the 4th quarter

This game had zero to do with JG... jesus. Talk about delusional. People like you clearly dont know the difference between offense and defense. They ran the ball down our defenses throat. How is it JG's fault that Scar scored on every drive of the 2nd half almost? O did their job, built a lead and had time consuming drive to spell the defense.

But continue

So your argument is.... Don't ask JG to win the game, that the O put sufficient points up and its the responsibility of the D to win the game. I don't like that much. I am pizzed that JG cannot handle pressure and all it took was two blitzes at the end of our final drive to stop the Vols. And that was so predictable, JG cannot get out of his own way.

So... there are two themes being pushed in these ongoing arguments... Its the D's fault... no its the Oline's fault.... but I'll say this, JG owns the results of the last two plays. He knew the Oline was going to have trouble stopping the rush, and everyone in the world knew the blitzes were coming, there was no other choice by SC.

No winners in this argument... this is clear to me. But all opinions do have merit. However, proclaiming JG as some jedi master that cannot do wrong is ludacrisp!
And... JG shoulda had a plan, cause he got punched in the mouth.

I'm not one claiming JG is great. I also dont think he has been awful. OL isnt helping. He missed some throws, his ball was sailing yesterday. Holding it too long. I do feel he has improved from last year and over the course of the season. Taking the sack atbthe end was 100% on him. But our oline having false starts on every 3rd and short and Callaway having a dumb penalty when we were driving inside the 15 wasnt on JG. A lot of missed opportunities on offense that dont lay at his feet. The O should have scored more but they gave the D rest and it didnt stop scar from scoring once in the 2nd half.
