Still neutral?
I was full in for Dooley and Butch. I’m doing my best not to do that again. Shoot... look how high Butch had us before collapsing

I see concerns, but much more positives.

Can anyone name a first time head coach who crushed it? Never seen it. Always a learning curve. Kirby’s loaded roster wasn’t great his first season either

Top 15 class at the worst this first year. Anything less than that isn't acceptable. Can't expect to compete with the gators and dawgs with recruiting like that.

This came up a week or so ago and Larry Coker came to mind. Obviously, a unique situation there. CJP has got 3-4 seasons to do something.

I think they will. The fan base is still here despite the crap fest of the last 10 years. The university knows this.
yeah but part of the reason the fanbase is here is that the university has given us some reason for continued hope with intermittent coaching changes. I don't think they can keep the donation level up and Neyland close to full with a Kentucky-esque building project.

Everyone expected us to struggle this year, with this roster and the mess that Butch left behind.

But now that we have lost in a close game on the road in the SEC, against a team that we were 9 point dogs to, Pruitt stinks apparently.

Everyone is losing their minds.

Defense woulda played like the first half and not lay down larrys in the second we woukd all be saying its great ro be a vol this morning ...never seen them stop a team like that then just let them run up and down the field UNTOUCHED rest of the game ..sad day on VN...

Yeah .will hurt till next year. We're getting better but Pruitt has to have his players we're just not big enough or strong enough.

First time all year i questioned Pruitt game management. End of 1st half, near midfield, with line 40 seconds and a TO... you need to at least try and get in FG range.

I would point out that there is a coach who might be in the top ten this week who wanted the job, but it doesn’t matter. I think it’s completely justifiable despite what the coach sniffers think to say we look better as a team from game 1, but this is truly the first game where coaching lost it for us.

...and how many years has it took him to turn around that program? Heck, he would have never survived this fan base long enough to get the job done. Pruitt and company haven't been on the job for a year yet, and many of y'all are on the edge of the cliff. Just way too many bellyachers in here.

I would have tried also, so it's fair to say I believe it was a mistake. But let's say we are right and it was a bad coaching decision, I never expected a rookie head coach to come out and be flawless in these calls.
Rookies at any job/position ARE going to make rookie mistakes. Some don't want to accept that and try to judge his worth already but it's foolish.

He may fall flat on his face, he may be the next elite or anything in between. but anyone claiming to know at this point, is putting entirely too much trust in their own evaluation skills. And I'm talkin d4h level here.

I don't think anyone expects a knight in shining armor but it would be nice if maybe, for once, UTK would open the damn checkbook and hire someone who has actually rebuilt a P5 program and/or won a championship so that those of us who don't take the infallibility of whomever they hire as an article of faith will have some real reason to believe that our staff knows what they're doing and is moving us in the right direction. Maybe it's unfair to withhold blind faith from CJP, but life ain't fair, aight.

Who is there to hire anyway? Nick Saban is the only coach who would win enough to satisfy this fanbase.

And just because we didn't see Pruitt's face turn purple doesn't mean he was passive. In fact, he doesn't exactly come across as a passive coach to me.

By "passive" I meant calling a TO, questioning the refs and asking for a review when he saw that play was resuming. Even if you don't get the call reversed, you work the refs. Would've been worth the TO. Pretty sure you knew exactly what I meant, though.

Welp... we **** the bed here.

Figures.
Nope...not at all.
We were competitive the entire game against a team we should not have beat on their own field. We didn’t get blown out and they fought the entire game. Every week this team shows progress and passion...that keeps us in the game on the recruiting side. As long as this trend continues we will be feeling great come signing day. JP and the coaching staff are doing a really good job with the hand they were dealt. I feel sorry for any fan that can’t see that.
