The thing is he's had all the time in the world to throw more times than not but he he's a first read then nothing QB
Finally someone who calls it like he sees it. He also fails to read the defense before the snap and either is not allowed to change a play or just does what is called. MSU's Fitzgerald was chewed out after the Florida game by his coaches for bad RPO's and the next week he responds with an awesome win vs Auburn. JG needs to either show up Saturday or sit the bench the rest of the year.

I agree with this to a certain extent.

However, not running the ball 80% of the time on first down isnt equivalent to “opening it up” or doing “more complicated stuff.” Playcalling can be varied without having to implement new or complicated things.

Mehlan would have been better than almost everybody we went after..I have said that a gazillion times. I just don't believe he would have come close to recruiting well enough at UT to do much better than he did at MSU. At UF he doesn't have to be an ace recruiter to recruit well. It is the perfect situation for him. He gets to ride what is left of the Urban coatails in Florida...he will do better there than he would have anywhere else. He will always be hard to beat for us there.

Pruitt got the short end of the coaching carousel stick imo. A raw lunatic fan base with zero patience, a brutal schedule, OJT taking it's pound of flesh and a roster on par with the worst in P5 football...

Not a recipe for much success, but I'm pulling for him to make it, I believe he and the staff are all really good football coaches..but I just really doubt he will. The Barbarians are already marching on the gates and it is just a few games into his tenure. Just no patience or understanding from this fanbase left.

And that is also understandable...trust me I get it, but I just think it is so counter-productive to the future, to be hyper-critical of these guys now. We need them to at least get better, tougher, more fundamentally sound football players in here to ever have a chance of rejoining the elite..where we belong. If we tear these guys down, instead of defend them at the grassroots level..it will make doing that much harder.

So I will do my part and toe that company line...even if I have some of the same concerns.
McGill, I agree with pretty much all of this. The one thing I'll add, something to think about...while, yes, there are those that are already calling for Pruitt's head, they were never onboard to begin with, and they are in the overwhelming minority. The huge majority of this fan base are either onboard and happy with Pruitt, or they're in a wait and see mode.

Here's my point, it seems you're worried that this minority is only going to get louder and louder as the season goes, if we continue to struggle; and if we struggle some again next year, they will be uncontrollable...I believe they will, as well, completely ignoring the fact that this is going to take a patient rebuild.

Phil Fulmer will resist this, however. He knows the bumps and bruises it's going to take to get it turned around, and as long as he's AD, Pruitt will get as much time as he needs to either prove he's the guy to do it, or not. Fulmer, as much as he loves Vol Nation, he will not let us bully him into ANYTHING. He is the one person, who can withstand the worst of us, the crazies, the BVS sufferers, ready to burn down Pruitt at any moment. As long as Phil is around, I'm not concerned one bit with a rash decision being made about the football program, no matter how loud the fringe is.

I just don't hold Dobbs in higher regard than Clausen. Had Dobbs led us to a 10-2 or 11-1 type season, other than two 8-4's, I'd probably feel different.
You got consider who was coaching and the crazy practices. He was a dang good QB . Team overall had some great players under utilized. Kamara, Barnett and few more really good players that's in the NFL.

You can only carry a team so far tho, especially with the injuries we had that year. Had JRM, Kirkland and Sutton not got injured we’re probably looking at an 11 win season. Plus Kamara being out vs Scar and Hurd quitting in the middle of it

Wonder if Trey Smith remains at LT with Wayna Morris and Darnell Wright (possibly) coming in. He's struggled there, but still our best option by far.
In my opinion no. Put Morris at LT slide Smith to LG, Kennedy at C, Carvin at RG, and Wright at RT. Should be a massive improvement assuming the two freshmen live up to the hype.

No doubt. I mean Dobbs is one of the best QB's that's ever played at UT, but I'm not holding him in higher regard than Clausen, mainly because he didn't win on that level.

Ah idk. I feel like Clausen was the type of dude that would have found a way to win at South Carolina. Dobbs also lost to Vanderbilt twice. That's a hell of a foul in my book.

Yea he played pretty bad vs Scar. Can’t blame him for either of the Vandy losses tho, especially 16’. He was dominate outside of that one fumble. He had one of the most efficient games in all of CFB that year. The other one he was a true Fr and (as much as I hate to say it) Vandy was a far better team than us

Butch lost to Vanderbilt twice. I'll never understand how people say" this QB lost or won vs this QB." There is literally no other sport in the world where the team matters more than the individual, yet we assign so much credit and blame to one single position. You put Tom Brady or Peyton Manning on the Browns of 10 years ago, no one today would remember Tom Brady or Peyton Manning's pro careers.

Against bad opponents and UF in 2016, sure. Against good defenses and USCe 2016, Vandy 2016, OU 2015, and Arky 2015 not really.

I'm a huge Dobbs fan. He's easily my favorite player we've had since 2000 and I was always patient that he'd develop even when he struggled as a passer in 2015. But if moxie means "putting the ball in the only place it could be caught WHEN IT COUNTS...putting the team on your shoulders and willing a win," Dobbs wasn't really able to do that consistently until 2016. And it's not like he was the only baller on that offense either and he still had some moments where he couldn't do enough to beat a lesser opponent.

Dude had a great career, no doubt. But Clausen's still the only QB I've watched win two games in the swamp. They called him the iceman for a reason.

Casey Clausen is by far my favorite player since 2000. The Iceman would ride into town, drink your beer, take your women, and ride out of town with the big W. He is the Bill Brasky of Tennessee football.

Just not true. The quarterback might be the most important position in all of sports. Yeah, put Brady or Manning in their prime on the Browns ten years ago and I'm confident folks wouldn't be viewing the Browns the same way as they do today. Dobbs was awful against South Carolina that night. If he had played well, we wouldn't have lost.

so say that, and don't call him a loser.

and understand the context of dobbs' teams vs. clausen's. we don't win 9 games in either of those years w/out dobbs.

hot take BS.

I remember that game well. He played great, think he went 31-34 or something like that. But that fumble towards the end of the game, probably lost us the game.
