The chances of getting a first down with a straight ahead run on 3rd on 17 is ZERO %....at least with a deep throw you HAVE A CHANCE...and if it gets picked? No worse than a punt. If it is incomplete...no worse than some lame run going nowhere.

99% chance of a sack if you have to throw down field and the D knows it.
