I’ve been thinking back to ‘13. I recall getting slap embarrassed in Oregon. That was a far better team than Florida, and we expected a rout. It was so bad though that I remember wondering if Butch could ever right the ship.

Well, the team rebounded and beat a very good SC team. I cried in the stands as I watched our players have something to celebrate because THEY deserved it. We all had hope after that.

All I’m looking for right now is something to give the team and the fans that same hope. We don’t know the future, but hope can go a long way. Play tough, rebound from mistakes, win a game you shouldn’t, be competitive, sign a good class, etc.

Anything for hope for these players who deserve it as much or more that that ‘13 team did.

You know what's funny, is 2013 had all the linemen and none of the skill players. This 2018 team can be seen as the opposite-- above average WR corps and a serviceable (at minimum) RB stable, with a shoddy OL. Even more ironic, that 2013 team is better suited for a LOS coach like Pruitt and our current team is better suited for a spread-em-out coach like Lyle.

Life is full of ironies.

I have hope that we finish with at least one conference win to not have a new worst season of all time in our history books. We knew this stretch would be brutal, but I think iron will strengthen iron under this staff, instead of our guys just hanging their heads and looking to incompetent coaches for leadership.

The good news (I hope this isn't me jinxing it) is besides Kennedy and some bumps and dings, S&C already seems to be having an impact. If we make it out of the meat-grinder that will be October with minimal injuries, I have faith that we come away late in the season with real momentum. Especially if Kentucky and Mizzou slip back down to earth.

Vol Calls (Pruitt's comments)

Find out a lot about yourself after you face adversity.

It’s easier to play defense (make checks) on the road because the home team is usually quite when their team is on offense.

We have a lot of guys who want to be the best football players they can be. They didn’t know how to get there when we first got here.

Guarantano feels good about where he’s at from a health perspective.

Quarte’ Sapp is practicing and everything is good.

Redshirt rule – can be tough for a coaching staff if after coaching a guy for 4 years and then 4 games into the 4th year he decides to transfer.

Anytime you put in a new offensive system you’ll have bumps in the road. We have some good offensive minds in our room.

Offensive identity needs to spread the ball around and go sideline to sideline and stretch field. You’ve got to also be able to run the ball when the defense knows you’re going to run.

Most recruits look at a school probably mostly because of the coaching staff.

We’ll approach the Georgia game like any other.

On if Chryst will play against Georgia - Keller takes reps with the 1’s every day. JG has been beat up. So we’ll see when the game gets here.

You make the call on whether or not to go for it on 4th down on 1st down because that decision affects the play calling on all the downs leading up to the 4th down.

Thinks we’ve had our best 2 weeks of practice the last couple weeks. Thinks we’re improving and will continue to improve every week if we continue to work hard.

Repeating maxims as a team is very impressive but it’s more than just saying the words. We really need to be able to put on more steam when the breaks go against us.

Guarantano works really hard every day. He’s really smart, gets it the first time. Has good feet and a good arm. Needs to have a bigger impact on his teammates. He’s improved every week and is developing some confidence that will help us down the road.

Micah strains everyday but needs more faith in himself. Recruited him in high school so have always thought highly of him.

Mincey is out for a couple weeks due to the injury he sustained in warmups last week.

We had some guys on our team that played their best game Saturday. We need everybody to step up and do that.

Retells the story of taking Kirby’s wife to the hospital when their twins were on the way.

We have guys who can go high point the football. (The question was, are you going to try to get the receivers more involved on 1st and 2nd down. He didn’t directly answer the question for obvious reasons).

Thought this past Monday we saw a lot of evidence that we’re moving in the right direction with the program and as a team.

We have to start the games better offensively in the first half.

We’ve improved in tons of areas since we’ve been here. Thinks we’ve improved every week. Not disappointed in kids at all but am disappointed in myself for not having them better prepared already.

They mean nothing. Especially since it's being revealed more and more about how the sausage is made at Rivals. I wouldnt be surprised to find kids/parents/coaches of prominent HS throwing cash at these groups to get a bump. If you think about it, the fact that they host all of these camps that likely cost money to attend, it's already common practice.

I wouldn't say nothing, myself. I do think they are overplayed.

To me they are just an indication of high school athleticism and strength, which should be a decent indicator of future success, but there are so many other qualities and hardships that can move that needle at any time.

It's a guessing game based on a little tape and a few metrics.

Vacationing in Hilton Head now. Went to Starbucks to check in on office stuff and get a few minutes of quiet from the grandkids. Go back to my truck, parked in the back of the lot away from most traffic, and notice a paint covered crease in my door matching the paint of the Mercedes SUV parked next to me. The women sitting inside had to slam the door wide open, because the vehicles weren't that close. And as you would expect, she went out of her way to avoid looking up at me while I was standing there. While I assume she had to be aware and simply didn't care, the intersection of stupid and rude is tricky.

Know right where you were having been there dozens of times ourselves. It can be infuriating to try to just back out of your parking space to leave without getting run over. Some of the rudest people on the island land there everyday. Heading to HHI on Monday for the month. FWIW - I park in the shopping center parking lot well away from the mess now.

Culture is a B.S. analytical device that has become the buzzword d'jour. All of our players want to win and are willing to work hard. Most of them are playing in new systems that do not necessarily fit their skill sets. Even our best player is playing tackle instead of his natural position at guard. Quit blaming the players for CJP's insistence on implementing his system this year instead of adapting to something that might actually accentuate the skills for which most of our current roster was recruited. Tired of the player blaming.

Apparently you have no clue what leadership is, means, or what it’s like to change an organization. From a military leadership perspective I can absolutely tell you that changing the culture of a group of young men is indeed real and is indeed a tough task. It’s much more than just wanting to win or be successful. It’s communicating vision, implementing a plan, and empowering your subordinate leaders.

Fulmer: there were 31 guys on the '98 team that went on and played in the NFL.

On talking to Pruitt about Saturdasy: Pruitt is a big boy, everybody in the building is disappointed. Effort wasn't the issue. 6 turnovers was the issue. We have a good football team but we need to play like it. We haven't done that yet. No one is making excuses. Everyone went back to work.

Fire Pruitt. He hates himself.

Not me
I’m enjoying seeing these guys improve
I like our defensive style and really like who your offense is gonna be once our guys get another year of s/c and some recruits

Good post.

I ain't ever checking out on the Vols. The good Lord only gave me so many games to watch in my lifetime and I ain't missing any of them. I'd rather experience a bad day in orange than a good one wearing another other schools colors. Screw all this checking out stuff.

I've all but checked out this year. It's just not worth the heartache

Understandable. I've re-managed my expectations to just looking for guys with SEC level talent that work hard during the games at each position. Some alpha guys that will have fun playing hard on Saturday. There are quite a few spots there are none. Good coaches find the ones they can trigger into playing big boy football. I'm tracking who I see that may respond to give me something to do for a year or two.

How many players from Tennessee's 63-37 win over Mizzou — the program's last SEC win — are still actively involved on the team now?

I went back and checked the box score and participation sheet...

Starters:
Jauan Jennings
Drew Richmond
Darrin Kirkland Jr.
Micah Abernathy

Backups:
Nigel Warrior
Jonathan Kongbo
Tyler Byrd
Kyle Phillips
Brandon Johnson

Carlin Fils-Aime, Marquez Callaway, Dillon Bates and Marquis Osborne all saw special teams snaps.

In total just 13 — with CFA, Bates, Osborne and Byrd having minimal to little impact on the current team.
