While I think Saban is obviously a great coach, I think his success now is more about out talenting everyone in college football. They have a $ystem in place that insures they get the best of the best. Then when they get them in their focus is 90% football and 10% college. They develop them NFL style. I don't think that changes with a change at the top. Maybe they drop off a bit but I don't see it. Heck, you and I could take it over and probably be successful as long as we didn't meddle with the system.
An average Joe when it comes to football could be head football coach at Alabama, and probably go to the playoff. Almost unfair what he's built down there. The level of dominance they've been on for a decade now is almost unimaginable.

Someone in the FF posted that the Vols are 4 point dogs to the gators.
I really don’t have a feel for this game. I could see us getting beat by 10 or more or winning by 10 or more.

I like our QB and running backs over Florida. As bad as both lines of scrimmage are for both teams it’s hard to predict. Special teams kicking are equal for both teams but we don’t have a game changer returning punts so I guess edge to Florida on special teams.

UGA is recruiting at a level that even Richt never approached.

I think a team or two can come up and compete but neither are going anywhere.
Georgia from a commitment to football standpoint is at least close to Alabama. We need to be willing to throw as much money around at recruits as those two programs do. It's essential.

Disagreed. They were **** for a decade before he got there.

The idea that these programs run themselves is asinine. We thought it with Tennessee when we fired Fulmer and Florida thought it when Urban left. The right guy has to be in place and it is very hard to find that guy.

We could go anywhere between 3-9 (quite possible but I think we'll do better) and 8-4 (not happening). I'm still stuck at 5-7 but will teeter towards 4 if we lose Saturday. There's not a team on our schedule left besides Charlotte that's a safe bet.
The Florida game is a pretty much a must win if we're going bowling. Every SEC team remaining on our schedule is better than Tennessee IMO.

To clarify a little further, I mean the average joe football wise could take Alabama to the playoff, this year, with the current personnel and staff being in place. He's built a machine down there that will take a Butch Jones type to screw up. Even after he retires, they'll go three or four deep at every position with legitimate 4 and 5 star players. The Alabama name brand will be at all time high, allowing them to further their dominance on the trail. They're most likely going to be able to hire whoever they want when he leaves. Therefore, they won't be hiring a Butch Jones caliber coach.

And again, I disagree with this assumption. I agree that they’ll likely still be good in the immediate aftermath when Saban retires. But it’s super unlikely they hire someone to continue at that pace. He is unparalleled in his ability to evaluate high school talent and then to do what it takes to get said talent on campus. There isn’t another comp. Dabo, Urban and maybe Kirby are close but they aren’t the same.

Not to mention whomever they hire isn’t going to have the unanimous say-so that he has.

They’re the best program in the country but even still hiring a football coach is a crapshoot. Much more likely they get it wrong than get it right.

Listening to Doug Matthews and he says one of our weaknesses on defense is lack of speed in the secondary. I found that puzzling. I thought we had adequate speed there, just lacking experience.

Curious what folks who’ve seen us live think. Hard to tell on TV.

Been a problem for us for a long time now.

They were crap for a decade largely because they were on probation and had to follow the same rules all other programs do. Once they start doing what they want the program does run itself. Saban is good no doubt, but no way he has this kind of run at just any school.

Sometimes I question his takes. When we have Thompson, Taylor, Warrior, and Jackson on the field at the same time, we don't lack speed.

I felt like it was noticeably worse in that period from about 2010 - 2014. I had a sense it had gotten better since then and was more about poor technique. Martin, Foreman and Sutton for example could all run... I feel like Thomson, Taylor and Warrior, etc can now as well.... maybe I’m wrong

Yeah, I hope this is our primary lineup as the season progresses. I think Jackson passes the eye test much more than 22. Appears to be a better tackler at least.

Also, Shamburger looks better at the Star than 22. In 3.5 years we’ve never seen a play like Sham made yesterday from Ab.

Even in 2006, we didn’t have anyone outside of Eric Berry with the speed to do anything with Dexter McCluster.

I think it’s more than just straight line speed too. It’s read and react speed, and having the speed to catch back up when the inevitable mistakes are made. Looks like we have some young speedsters back there, but that read/react speed will only come with experience.
