that doesn't make sense. Enough people left AFTER the hurricane to offset the deaths from the hurricane? they are constantly losing people.

turns out Puerto Rico loses about 70k people a year. populatioin of puerto rico - Google Search

I don't know, but when your island is obliterated, it wouldn't seem unreasonable for a large percentage to move to the mainland.

Better governing and better infrastructure could have prevented a lot of that. They went broke with liberal policies.

They have had massive debt and infrastructure problems for a while now. Their economy has been in the crapper for a very long time.

Possibly but their rate per 1000 hasn't changed much either.
The death toll includes people killed in an intersection with traffic signals out , death from chainsaw injuries, fallen power lines, etc. over the 6 months after the hurricane. Anything to make the number as high as possible. Still, there was never a body count, just a statistical model.

I live in Florida and see these statistics all the time. The death toll routinely includes people who die in the aftermath, i.e. falling off roofs making repairs. No one has ever interpreted it to be the narrow window of time from when winds reached 39 mph to when they subsided to under that threshold a few hours later.

That seems to be what Trump wants to do, which is ironic, becasuse then he wants to take credit for a great response to the disaster, which by definition came in the aftermath.

No, I think the media wants Trump to get the blame for things that are not his fault.

You're not defending him, you're covering up for him and whitewashing everything he does like a good little puppet. Call a spade a spade once in a while and you might have some credibility.

Fact Check: Trump is Right About Puerto Rico, Critics Manipulating Hurricane Maria Death ‘Estimates’

Democrats and the media have been pounding President Donald Trump over the past few days, as Hurricane Florence nears the Carolinas, over his alleged insensitivity to deaths in Puerto Rico last year from Hurricane Maria.

On Thursday morning, President Trump pushed back on Twitter, alleging that Democrats had inflated the death toll “in order to make me look as bad as possible.”

That led to more criticism, with the Associated Press accusing Trump of making claims “without evidence.”

But Trump is correct.

An independent study, not a manipulation by partisans. Certainly the infrastructure and lack of essential preparedness contributes to this, but to dismiss the number of fatalities which resulted in the aftermath of the conditions left behind by this weather accomplishes nothing. The goal should always be to improve the response time to those in need following natural disasters; not to give ourselves "A pluses" because we feel we did all we could at the time.

The goal of the DEMs is always political. They could care less about the victims or solving problems. They thrive on chaos.
