Like everybody else, I was very disappointed in our defense, especially lack of pass rush. But now, after having a chance to digest it all, I'm not as disappointed in the pass rush or defense overall. I posted in the game thread before the game that we shouldn't count on putting a lot of pressure on Grier as the key to stopping them because that offense just doesn't allow it. Although I'd hoped the LBs would help more, and I was counting on CJP's magic in that area, I shouldn't be surprised in the results.
Also, the special teams did them no favors on the missed fg. A stupid offsides on that missed fg, gave them a first down, and they turned it into a td. I realize special teams played well and that play isn't purely the special team, and that the defense still gave up the td, but that's automatically 7 less points without that penalty. So it's not totally on the defense.
And as impressed as I was with the offense, they also did the defense no favors in the 2nd half. We only possessed the ball 11 minutes in the second half. They did to us what we needed to do to them--control time of possession and tire the defense out. If the offense could've sustained just a couple of drives, scoring or not, they wouldn't have scored so much in the 2nd half.
I expect our offense to get better in this area and therefore I expect the defense to get a lot better between that and coaching and growing up.
Can't wait for UF. NegaVols don't come at me. Keep your misery to yourself.
You're not even allowed to say he's young and has never been a head coach before.
I don't know how you judge a coach based off of his first game against a top 20 team with the lack of talent that we had. Were they perfect? No, but dang guys, one game against a first round NFL QB with our talent on defense is a tough game to judge. I thought we were more talented than we are, clearly I was wrong. Lets give the man some time before we start judging him.
Really hope Pruitt, gets the feel on the difference in our talent from what he has on previous teams he's coached.I was pleasantly surprised to at the offense. Sure, there were some bumps. I was extremely pleased with the development of JG. I was disappointed in some of the play calling, particularly with the zone read plays. Thought they were a waste of a down, but it was first game so I'm sure they were trying different things. I was a little disappointed that we didn't test them downfield some. I realize time in the pocket was an issue but in the second half it seemed the OL was holding up better. Other than the scoreboard, I think the offense was pretty good and has a chance to be a strong part of this team.
The defense was the shocker to me. I expected vast improvement. It wasn't there. Whether it's the players or play calling I'm not sure. I think it's probably a combination of both but mostly lack of quality, experienced players.
As to the coaching, I thought it was a huge mistake not going for it on fourth down late in the half. We were in that no man's zone where too long for a field goal and a punt was likely not going to yield much. I think the punt ended up being a net 15 yards of field position. We didn't score and they got three so it was a potential 10 point difference.
The only other blatant thing that I saw was putting the freshmen DBs on an island against that offense. It was never going to work. I 'll give him the benefit of the doubt as he may have been trying to get them ready for FL, which is a much more important game.
I like coach Pruitt. I think he has Amor potential. I think his biggest challenge is recruiting at a high level with the results we're going to see on the field this year.
Nothing makes me special. You've pointed it out three times. I've not taken you to task for it either. You ignore the fact our other three were. I could say I am not allowed by you to point that out. What the heck makes you special? We lost. We sucked. We better get better. No real experienced coach outside of Leach wanted to be here. Pruitt better be the right hire. You will see transfers and Byrd will be one.
I didn’t see anything on the field that screamed unprepared. Players if anything over thought which it being the first game was understandable. Pruitt skipped the eternal second guessing that would have resulted from kicking the field goal instead of going for it on fourth. And JG threw for two TD’s? Who called that?He was probably not ready for a job this big. Doesn't mean he can't overcome his inexperience. The guy was coaching high school 10 years ago. He's extremely young.
Yeah, the SEC looks strong out of the gate. Team speed and overall size is what I really noticed that we lackIt's clear the chasm between UT and top-talent teams like UGA, Bama and Auburn is really wide. It's possible we won't even be competitive in those games and it'll be deflating to watch. But home field gives us an advantage against UF, UK and Mizzou-- all winnable games. The margin for error is slimmer after this weekend, we're weaker at key positions than originally thought, some games will make our shortcomings glaringly obvious and the media will magnify every flaw, but it's too early to write off the season.
As many have stated, you can't claim him a failure based on one game. You also, by the same token can't claim him as the next savior. He didn't show me anything one way or another to come to any conclusion. I said many times that I like the guy and what he's done to this point. Just the absence of all the drama is refreshing. All I've said he's a very young and inexperienced coach to take on this monumental rebuild. I hope he's up to the task. He's shown me nothing that says he isn't.I didn’t see anything on the field that screamed unprepared. Players if anything over thought which it being the first game was understandable. That's how I saw it Saturday. Got to have more biggs. JG was nice surprise. It's clear the chasm between UT and top-talent teams like UGA, Bama and Auburn is really wide.
