People looking at Mizzou and USCe as being certain losses are completely negating the growth factor. First time coach with a very young position group, playing what will probably end up as a top 10 team. As is, yes, this team wins maybe 5. But I'm not looking at that... nor unrealistically thinking we become monsters later. I expect constant improvement in some areas, and realize others are probably going to stagnate.

OL will gel, if healthy. They've barely practiced together.
Secondary will improve greatly.

DL and LB I don't have much hope for, and the rest of the positions did well.

Seeing how we do vs Mizzou will be a test to see how much we’ve gotten better on D. Mizzou is the closest offense (in terms of the way they play) to WVU that we will play again. I’m looking forward to it

This is so true...I knew it was coming, I knew it would take more than a few practices to fix this mess, but still in my heart I wanted to believe the inflators were right and I was wrong. I am really disappointed that SOME guys are still flopping around spastically trying to tackle, and playing pansy ball. I was hoping they would play tougher and more disciplined..

There are some positives though, and I hope the patient teaching starts to pay dividends as the season goes along.

I do not place blame on the staff for this. These guys are all proven teachers, but you can't teach someone who either isn't inclined, or just simply unable to learn.

As the roster is turned over, the program will get better.
How do you make it through real life every day?

My sober rewatch led me to feel better. Wasn't as bad as it appeared. There were a handful of plays that changed game and guys in the wrong spot/miscommunication on assignments. A lot more fixable than I thought while watching live. It was a more mature cohesive team vs a team with brand new staff and young inexperienced players not used to playing together. Some throws by Grier were ridiculous and not even a way to defend them and doubt many QBs on our schedule can make those throws.

If we can settle on our lineups and rotations and let them mature together we should be better by end of season if healthy.

Abernathy still has to go even after sober review. Theo Jackson deserves more snaps with the way he played in limited snaps
I agree with just about all you said here atter I also rewatched it again into the wee hours last night.

I don't think Grier himself can make some of those throws consistently. When WVU runs into a better pass rushing team with a little more mature, cohesive and complete secondary...they will get obliterated. They have no running game really. I think the defense did a really good job for the most part on run defense..at least until they tired late in the game. The LBs could do a better job filling the gaps too.

I have never ignored anyone. I have come close but never have.

The thing is that I have respected you as a poster. But the last 9 months have been much more brutal than you used to be.
I really am sorry you feel that way. I have no desire to make others feel bad. It blows my mind sometimes that obvious and extremely vexing things about the team are taboo to talk bluntly about, or express your extreme distaste of.

It took a lot to get me to this point, all it would take to make me feel better is to play tough hardnosed football and quit getting our teeth kicked in. I am so sick of seeing defensive players spastically flopping, and grabbing at jerseys or air, or just being nowhere near where they supposed to be 🤢

"Shawn Shamburger (who didn’t play a single defensive snap and remains in the coaches doghouse)"

What happened with shawn for him to be in the doghouse?

Where did I say I was ready to fire Pruitt? I simply pointed out that CJP has no head coaching experience and it's tough to get that at school like TN. When you hire unproven coaches the risk of failure is greater. I can't back this up with statistics, maybe Chatt can help us out here but I'd say based on statistics alone, he's more likely to fail than be successful. All I've done is point out that because of his lack of head coaching experience we don't know what to expect.
You expressed serious doubt that he was "ready for a job this big"..did you not?

I did not mean that you were screaming "Fahr Pruitt". I was simply using you, a normally positive non critical poster, as an example of those things get started.

We said we need to be patient, and withhold judgement on this years results...but..yet ONE game in and people, even good people like you, are already expressing doubt about the guys ability to be the head coach

How do you make it through real life every day?
The same way you do? How about you get off my back, and quit being a jerk? If you don't like me, ignore me.

Now..then having said that, what was in that post that offended you so bad? I thought it was comparatively more optimistic and supportive in nature than the way I posted after the game. I feel like the team can improve, and actually had a few bright spots that can be built on upon review.

Maybe my expectations were too high, but this loss hurts more than most. Either way, I expect UTs secondary to improve. My biggest worry is the DL, especially when the offense passes, no pressure. Surely, UT finds a way to pressure the QB by the time, Florida rolls around

I’m so apathetic towards this loss. Totally expected it, given where we are. Took a lot of pressure off and I could relax through the game.

Adjusting expectations in the short term is key, while not settling in the long term.

I have different expectations for each of my children based on their age and maturity. It doesn’t mean I’m thrilled to still be wiping pee off the toilet seat from my 8 year old, and I have no idea why he intentionally throws dirty toilet paper next to the trash instead of in it. My 14 year old doesn’t make a mess, but won’t lift s finger to clean someone else’s mess. I’m a man, so I don’t make a mess and clean up after others.

My boys are boys, and perform like boys, but I’m raising them to be men.

We want this team to perform like men, but it’s easy to see, they’re still peeing on the seat, but they won’t always

Is anyone else optimistic about the fact that the team now has two relatively easy games upcoming to work out all the kinks, before the UF game?

Just figuring out the right OL combination as well as getting some young guns more experience over the next two weeks would make a worlds of difference the next two weeks.

Another thing too, and this has probably been mentioned several times already, but that WVU game was an away game in front of hostile crowd. Neutral site game my ass. I was sitting on the UT side and when the PA announcers would yell for fans to represent their schools - it would get respectably loud for Tennessee, but when he called on WVU, it got noticeably louder all around us. Anytime WVU made a play or it was a big third down for UT, etc, that stadium was rocking.

Man that loss was deflating. I can’t shake it.
Maybe this will help.

Yes, absolutely.

So just for fun I checked out the Michigan, Texas, and UCLA message boards for postgame commentary. Some of their boards are probably NSFW but in general there’s a very familiar feeling about the atmospheres and commentary.

One of the more unique comments came from the UCLA board in a thread titled, Chip Kelly just announced:

The rest of the games will be closed to the public.

Yup. Just get through the next two withoutsignificant injury. Listened to Big Orange Sunday last night. It cheered me up. Coach Mathews echoed your comments. OL will gel. Freshman in secondary will get better. Hopefully Warrior just had an off game. Shamburger wil get his sh*t together.

Absolutely. 90% of the time, I'm all for playing great teams right off the bat. This year was the exception.
I wished so much that we weren't running out our brand new staff, schemes and freshmen against a top 25 team. The aftermath has been more than evident.

But of course it played out the way it did, it's just how it works with us. It's Tennessee.
