Y’all really do crack me up. We played what some think will be a playoff team and a Heisman probably front runner at qb and played well before a long weather delay and all of a sudden we won’t be able to compete with Florida who played a glorified high school? Lol. GTFO with that mess. Opinions will change when Florida barely handles business this weekend against Kentucky at home. Remember we will be 2-1 and will be playing at home. 4-0 to start the season was the hope but 3-1 was realistic. That is still attainable unless where I missed they changed the rules to one game seasons now.

We won’t go on a run like this but let’s not forget UGA getting beat by Boise State a few years ago and their season didn’t end there. We’ve got some game film to review and things to work on. Just a bad opening week matchup for a largely inexperienced secondary. We got two more practice games before UF.

UCLA fans are totally behind Chip. UCLA is playing a lot of FR and Speight went out with a back injury early in the game. So they were playing a FR at QB and he couldn't hold serve. Both teams have a way to go and young talent that needs seasoning. I'm an alum of both schools, so I got served a double helping of suckage, and I'm sure there will be more to come.
Excellent both teams learning new O and Defense and badly development of talent. Going take a few games just on changes alone. Lack of talent and depth will take awhile.

My goodness do y’all show mercurial mood swings.

Pre-game: gonna kill them. We can’t be stopped.

Post-game: we suck. Our entire team is a bunch of broken losers.

Seriously, where the eff is your VOLUNTEER spirit? Unbunch your panties. Put on your big boy pants (or big girl pants) and support your team. First game for a new coaching staff and many new starters with a new scheme. Of course there will be issues. They have two cupcakes to iron it out.

Damn neutral site game for marketing. Would have been better at home. Would have been better to play a cupcake to begin this season, but you cannot change the schedule that late. Coach Pruitt won’t back down from any team. That mentality will happen to the team soon. The next two weeks will help.

Hey Freak, why did this post get inserted at the bottom of the page rather than at the end as the newest post? Thanks again for VN!

JG looked good when he was protected. OL needs to play much better. How about Tim Jordan being a beast? So happy for that kid. If the OL can play better and we find a decent pass rush we’ll be fine this fall.
i think from a run blocking standpoint, their front really confused us. we didn't look like we knew who to block at times. too much penetration by their front to really lean on them and get to hte 2nd level.

pass protection was pretty good and i thought JG delivered the ball pretty darn well.

the start was just not good enough. way too many negative plays on those 1st two series, especially on 1st down. we made it pretty easy on their defense with 2nd and 9 or longer.....

the defense i think is just gonna be a work in progress.

I said "Thank God for Rick Barnes" yesterday, but it took him three years to get things rolling, and his success in year three may have been a year ahead of schedule because of how nicely the team meshed and how well his recruits panned out.

Same thing with Pruitt. We knew it was a multi-year rebuild. It sucks to see it play out in real time, but we just have to be patient and hope for maybe one nice upset win this year and maybe a 7-5 season next year. Year three we can either take a huge leap forward or another steady step forward (9-4) and be set up for a huge season in year four.

I hate it because we've been rebuilding for a decade, but that's the reality right now.

Man, I never thought Barnes would work out. Dude can flat out coach.

Well said.

Last staff left this entire organization in shambles. Unrealistic to expect a first time head coach to work miracles, week one.

And I was someone who was getting frustrated all day yesterday. Had to keep reminding myself of what is reality. After sleeping on it, I feel much better. I still don't have a doubt in my mind that Pruitt is going to turn this thing around and win a National Championship while at Tennessee.

In the meantime, I'm going to enjoy watching these young guys grow as players and as a team.

Bottom line: you can say we looked bad yesterday, that we’ll very likely look some variation of bad all season, and still be a Vol fan and optimistic about the long term future.

Time to get our heads out of our asses and focus on the two fun weeks ahead.
i can sit here and do that, and still be frustrated about another year or two of suck. it's been a looooong time coming. and we still have a ways to go.

that's frustrating. that's also not this staff's fault, but that's the baggage this fan base has.....good, bad or indifferent. we want to win. we're tired of losing.

the difference is seperating the rational from the irrational. and it's the day after a pretty bad loss....so there's a lot of irrantional out there right now.....

i do think this team gets better as the season goes on. how much better? dose that improvement translate to W's?

no idea.

Maybe I’m in the minority here, but I felt like the o line really started to play well from the second quarter on. After the atrocious start, I don’t remember much pressure on JG and we started really opening up lanes in the run game. The only exception was the lack of push on the goal line. I’m more concerned about the defensive line than the offensive line after yesterday.

Other hot take...despite Jordan’s great game, our most talented back is Banks. He looked to have more juice in the limited touches he got. I hope we get to see a lot of him the next two weeks. I predict he is getting an equal share of the carries by the end of the year.

Yeah. It's gonna take time. Unfortunately, this fanbase is damn near out of patience. So Pruitt is going to struggle a bit to get fans to buy-in unless he beats Florida this year or pulls off a major upset. Year two won't be significantly better, either, because "his" guys will be still be young. Butch had everything going for him but couldn't get over the hump. Pruitt isn't really getting the benefit of the doubt the same way Dooley and Jones did.

That said, Jones was a strength and conditioning hire away from winning the East in 2016 and terrible, horrible, awful Dooley was an average DC hire away from winning 9-10 games in 2012.

Perhaps the Tennessee job is actually easier than we think it is and we've just been hiring absolute buffoons who can't get out of their own way.

Hey negavols- I keep seeing you talk about how horrible WVUs defense is. Where are you getting that? From last year? Is there a chance that maybe, just maybe, they have improved? Or are you arguing that players and units cannot improve from one season to another? If that’s the case, then why the hell are we even playing this year?

Their grad transfers on the DL were big for them. Changes their DL significantly. They were weak in secondary but DL kept from being able to call longer developing plays

Seriously, though. Rick Barnes and a healthy, strong basketball team are the perfect antidote to what's happening on the football field right now. I used to be so envious of other schools who had "fallback" sports where, even if they sucked in one major sport, they were strong in another. Well, we kinda have that now. It's not going to be like most of the post-Pearl and post-Fulmer era where we sucked in both sports simultaneously and were even more atrocious in something like baseball.

It all settle down eventually and a schedule gets played. Then we argue about what the REALITY means. 😏

That's a good point. I am a bit extreme in my wait and see stance.

I'm early in my request. Asking for moderate perspective on a Sunday is a little foolish on my part.

I’m not “conceding” anything. But I’m also not going to pretend like I’m in this fight at all. It’s so funny that some of you think your individual support and steadfastness results in wins or losses on Saturday. You’re not making tackles or catching passes.

We’re all 3rd party observers making comments about what we see on the field, from the players and the coaches. I was at 6-6 before this game and will likely stay that way - although I think the road is much tougher today than I did yesterday.
Exactly where I'm at
