Are we any better?

No. D is atrocious, seemed unprepared. Only ran for 124 yards against a team that was 110th in rushing last year. We'll be lucky to score against Bama, UGA and Auburn

Yeah, I think 7-5 is the absolute ceiling, but there needs to be some significant improvements to get there.

6-6 or 5-7 are the most likely.

This was a blowout and, sadly, wasn’t even as close as the final score indicated. We suck again!

Lot to work with...I’m stoked! First game against an elite NFL level passer. Buncha kids working together in a new system on both sides of the ball. By the end of the game we were running more than impressively. And we have our QB!
Agreed. This team will be much better in a few weeks. Lots to be hopeful about.

We still have about what 70% Butch players on the roster?

Our secondary looked slow and awful tonight. Our D line is just soft and can't get off blocks, they got no rush or penetration. Grier had all day back there to tear us apart. I'm really disappointed in how both units played tonight.

It's going to take 2 more recruiting classes to turn over the roster. Hope they prove me wrong, but I think it's gonna be another pretty tough season. Let's hope we make a bowl.

Yes, but what about the “talent” we’re alleged to have recruited? This staff has had 40 something practices to influence these players and there was essentially no change. All of the frustrations associated with poor fundamentals are still there.
Not even one full season.

We should see improvements week to week. Game reps will improve play. More practice reps will improve play.

Give the guy something time. Dang. We're only coming off the worst season in UT history. This isn't going going to be a miracle turnaround. Weekly improvements are what we're hoping for realistically.

Thought we had a defensive genius. Nothing, not anything, on that side improved.

We’ve had 2 defensive “geniuses” in a row. Defense does not look good. But I didn’t expect miracles starting three freshmen DBs.

Don’t forget that UGA took a step back in Smart’s first year. Installing new stuff and recruiting to a different system takes time

It's definitely not the X's and 0's....We may need better Jimmy's and Joe's.

No year zero... you are at UT and expectation are to win, fair or not. These guys are paid millions to win football games and they failed to do that today. They have two weeks to fix the problems they saw and figure out how to win with the roster they have this year.

If you expect today's problems to be fixed in two weeks you might as well check out till kickoff next year.

A lot of folks on here that are hating are the same ones who would be saying we would 10-2 or 9-3 if we played UTEP and won to open the season. If you don’t see improvement as the season progresses then it’s time to worry, but to panic after one game against a team who some analyst projected to win the Big 12 is dumb. Don’t forget Saban went 7-5 and lost to the Ragin Cajuns in his first year and Kirby went 7-5 at UGA.

We are absolutely better than last year. Go back and watch the Florida game from last year and see how many times we shot ourselves in the foot to lose that game. We were beaten and beaten badly today but we didn’t beat ourselves. Last year when we got goal to go inside the 5 it was an automatic penalty. Plus, we weren’t ready to play most of the games and would look horrible for quite a while before waking up, if we ever did. Yes, it took a couple of possessions to get going today but not as long as last year. We didn’t quit like last year, Guarantano looked a ton better, and I guarantee we will not lose every SEC game. So it’s an easy answer. We are absolutely better than last year.

Defense is a huge concern. Quite honestly, I thought the OL looked much better after the first two possessions. Those were nightmarish

I thought the whole offense played better the longer the game went. Kennedy had actually gotten to the point he was wearing the guy out who had been wearing his axx out. I thought JG as QB played well enough to win, he didn't really hurt us but was an overall positive. Our defensive front 7 shocked me though. Lots of our blue chippers were manhand,ed but no so blue chippers. Case in point, Grier was not hardly dirty. I can't recall Kingbo or Taylor's names called on tackles. Tuttle had one TFL that I saw. Our freshman played like it as DBs, lots of busted assignments but they would flash brilliance every now and then. I'm more concerned about our defense than I am the offense based on what I saw.

Our defensive line looked like an offencive line they went for a block instead of trying to beat a block. Offensive line didn't even try to block. We lost that game in the trenches. JG looked good and so did Jordan. Can someone tear the wide receiver screen out of the playbook. While your at it get rid of corner blitz. I did like seeing some in game adjustments. Some good a lot of bad let's improve and move on. Go Vols

Threw 1 game? Probably not just by the eye test.

If UF comes to Neyland in 3 weeks and we look like we did today I ll worry.

WVs O (specifically passing) is better than anything in the conference. Their D was solid. Not SEC good but not terrible either.

Could be that WV is better than orginally thought.

Far too many of you are upset because the team did not meet your ridiculous expectations. We are not a good football team and haven't been for a long time. We are playing with many of the same starters from the past several year's suck fest on defense. There is no hope for many of them, they are just not very good and they have gotten used to losing. Players have to be taught how to win again when you lose for so long

This version of Grier is one of the best QBs UT has seen in a while. You have to tip your cap to him. He is a very good QB.

However, we continue to be mediocre up front on both sides of the ball. You cannot win big-boy football games like that.

There are things good coaches can fix in one year.

Experienced head coaches? I agree. A first ever HC. Taking over a program that just had its worst season in school history? And a team full of players that are vastly underdevelope, undisciplined, slow, weak and soft? Sorry, but that stuff takes longer than one year. As some others have said, Butch was not that great at recruiting true SEC level guys. Just look at the difference between the type of guys Pruitt is recruiting now. Huge differenece. But I guess because this one game was a bad showing, that means that the whole year is shot.

I think what disappoints me the most is that I expected us to dominate at the line of scrimmage. I mean it doesn't take a lot to teach blocking and getting off blocks. I beginning the think this program is cursed or something. I find myself thinking "do we even workout"?

That’s almost part of the problem. I did not see our coaches to anything exceptional today to make up for our deficiencies. They better be the best recruiting coaches in the country if they can’t scheme up advantages or we will continue to lose to Bama, UGA and other top notch teams.
