Wouldn't surprise me to see Tae and Thompson start-- possibly even Flowers a few games in. Their upside is already apparent. The only lock in the secondary is Warrior, IMO. Having TKJr on the field for leadership would be a plus, especially if we start FR, but not sure how he's going to fit in.
yeah,, there's some guys that aren't getting talked about a lot that could figure in big time in the defensive backfield. labruzza, shamburger, jackson...among others. i could see guys like buchannon and osbourne getting passed up a bit.

best players will play. time to step it up.

Does it only go back one year? Cause there are a ton of players from the past I would take before I got to Gaulden. haha.
hell, i'd just take the 2001 team in its entirety right now, and roll with it, with this staff.

So true, Kiffin probably would have gotten us in trouble at the time. Ironically it probably would have been the same result as the last 8 years. Kiifin is good coach and that is why the fans were upset when he left. We could have possibly landed the top class that year.

That being said, hiring Dooley was the downfall of the program. Tennessee was a big brand at the time, should have hired an interim and then made a big hire the following year. Dooley should have never been hired with his resume. Dooley destroyed the brand and the program to a level where we were turned down by Charlie Strong and had to settle for Butch. It still baffles me that anyone on the site can defend Dooley, that was the darkest time in Tennessee football. Butch Jones at least had a couple of good years.
Dooley never had the worst season in 120 yrs of history, Butch did.

Yep. I've said for a while that our players are a lot better than people think and we have a lot more options than are being discussed. The questions are, how much can this staff improve the guys we have before the season starts... and how quickly can the new guys learn and contribute? This is pivotal because we need to start fast and go 4-0 or at least 3-1 in September. October will be brutal.

George has got some mentions too. Always liked him. Hope he does well. And Davis was mentioned over the summer but haven't seen much in camp yet. We have a lot of guys with potential, just need to turn it into production. And I don't remember who said it but some reporter, Ainge maybe, said we'd probably have a rotation of about 10 db's (cb and safety) that got playing time. Warrior, TKJr, Abernathy, Alontae, Thompson, Flowers, Labruzza, Shamburger, Jackson, George, Davis, CFA, Bailey, Buchanon and Osbourne are 15 to pick from. I'm sure Pruitt can find a solid rotation of 10 of those guys handle our secondary.

that's why this season is so hard to figure right now. i get why everyone says we're going to suck. it's not really going out on a limb to say a 4-8 team that returns a lot of the same players, with a completely new staff coming on board, is going to struggle.

but there's a lot of context missing both as to how/why last season played out the way it did, and how all the "new" effects/changes the result of this season.

but if you really dig in to it, and really, just get a few "right" answers to all the questions we do have, this could be a pretty good year, relatively speaking.

and lastly, you're 100% correct. we'll know pretty darn fast some of those answers, and even if we start to get some of the right answers, by the time we do, it may be too late. we start 2-2, and we're going to be sitting on the edges of our seat the last month of the season.

Yeah, he kinda has been. He was very high on last year's team, along with Butch Jones. I think he said before the season last year that the freshman and sophomore classes for that year were some of the finest classes he's seen up there. Just not true IMO. I like him, but he's a sunshine pumper.
They very well may have been but what smeared the look was a sorry coaching. DL lined up 2 yards off ball. Corners not looking back for ball. Throwing the ball 4 downs at the 1 yard line. Letting players not lift weights(wtf). Letting players that are "so called injured" not attend team meetings and functions. I am sure that list goes on and on. They have to put those shiny classes in a position to win and they did right the opposite. So with this new coaching staff I bet we get to finally see that shine Matthews was referring too. IMO

Starting freshman/rookie corners isn’t really that big of a deal in college or NFL. Hell Marcus lattimore was one of the best corners in the nfl this year. Cam Sutton was dynamic was a freshman.

They are so dependant on pass rush anyway. Only the best corners can hold up so long.

If we find a decent pass rush we will be fine.

It's just easier for the media and the doubters to say we're going to suck because we went 4-8 last year and claim a new staff can't turn it around that quickly in the SEC. The way I look at it, we should have been at least a 7-5 team last year and the black hole of improbable injuries, inept coaches, fed up players and the general air of DGAF around the program negatively skewed the season.

Looking at it from that perspective, with the schedule we play and all of our players healthy, I think we're a 7-5 team this year. IMO, the new players and coaches we gained outweighs the players and coaches we lost. So I have a positive bias, while the media has a negative one. But you're right-- if we start 2-2, it would be a reset.

agreed. i think most people are just remembering the gaffes we had that were so glowingly on display...not eyeing the ball, WR's running by them, the poor tackling etc...the DB play just hasn't been very good. so i think if we get the DB's, CB's specifically, to do more fundamentally sound things, that in and of itself may prevent some of the bad things that happened defensively.

i'd really feel pretty good about a 3-1 start.

but beat WVU, and all bets are off. 4-0 is attainable, and i'm feeling really good about myself.;)

Butch is a better Headcoach than dooley. There’s no doubt about that.
Not a monumental achievement of course, but a lot of us seem to think that painting Butch as worse than our worst helps heal RECENT wounds.

I actually think Orgeron is going to do well there. He swung big on an OC that didn’t fit there. I have LSU going 10-2 maybe 11-1
i think LSU is on the way down. there's not a lot of positivity at all down there, and they have a tough schedule.....the natives are already a little restless....it won't take much to push them over the edge. they're following the Tennessee plan on replacing national championship winning coaches.

Players are going to run through a wall for him and he is smart enough to let his coaches coach like Fulmer. I like him more than most admitted
haha, the AD had to have a meeting with him and OC because he WASN'T doing that last year....after he said he learned his lesson and was going to...
