I was looking into the pass rush production we have returning on defense. Our returners totaled 10 sacks in 2017. 4.5 were against P5 opponents. 2 of those were by DBs
Pass rush is a huge concern.
Run defense was bad last year, but I also think run defense is an easier fix than pass rush. If you can coach them up and get them to play disciplined, you don’t necessarily need a team full of beasts to field a decent run defense.
But when it comes to pass rush sometimes you just need dudes who can get after the QB. We don’t have anybody who has proven he can get to the QB consistently yet.
I agree a stong pass rush needs to emerge but I think some of our key guys for that up to this point may have either been injured or just too young to deliver on the big stage. Age & Talent often figures into matchups along the line of scrimmage. Assuming we can stay healthy we may have matchup advantages up front with some of the teams we face this year. We have older talented guys; it just needs to translate to the level of play they're at now. I think the most glaring failure of 2017 across the board was almost a total lack of motivation (coaching). I think that's why CJP has emphasized since shortly after arriving our need to learn how to strain and to finish. (I see the issue of straining as a polite way of publicly addressing lack of effort and the issue of finishing as adressing the lack of will to win, determination) jmo.
