This is what I can't wait for. I've been trying to find the words to compare our current situation with how desperately bad things looked in 2013 before we knocked off South Carolina.. my impending point being, if that 2013 team knocked off USCe, there's no reason to think this team wouldn't be able to hang with a biggie like Georgia or Auburn. We have more really intriguing games (WVU, Florida, USC, Mizzou) than we have "sure losses" (UGA, Barn, Bama).
I see it the same way and the more I see, the better it looks. It doesn't seem like such a stretch to see Tennessee with the current staff and roster go toe to toe with anybody. I don't mean I "expect" any certain number, but it wouldn't shock me to see the team more than ready to play football by September. Every season there is a team predicted by smug pencil-necked experts to finish under an imaginary ceiling of wins made out of limits that... the team surpasses that season by winning more games than the soothsayers said they could. Does it go the other way where heavy favorites get knocked by teams who make the most of what they've got when they take their shot? Yes. Of course, we obviously know that kind of upset happens practically every season, too. No one ever knows for sure which exact teams will fail to win all the games they're "supposed to" and which teams will beat the odds when they upset the shoe ins, but we do realize "better" teams lose and "lesser" teams win at some point every season.
What is so different about this season for Tennessee?
The smell of the grass, the return of the cleats, the jerseys, the pads, and even the sight of a team schedule or calendar showing that first game getting closer all does something special around this time of year. It awakens the spirit of the gridiron warrior within everyone who ever played the game and loved it. This season is no different in that regard.
The sheer number of National Championships won by this team's coaching staff and Athletic Director inspires confidence that players can trust. When players are this confident in their coaches, it means coaches can be confident their players are coachable. Coachable players, through hard work strengthened through the help of that solid coaching, develop into players who exceed their previous limits and reach their full potential. This team has the potential to win every time they step on the football field and beat any psychological limits they refuse to surrender to.
Upsets happen all over the country every season in every conference. That's the reason it's not just all called done by a computer. Right?
If another team thinks it can steal a Tennessee victory off the orange and white schedule of this season that belongs to Tennessee, they still have to come on to a football field and try to convince us for a whole four quarters to believe the lie that they want what belongs to Tennessee more than Tennessee is willing and able to fight to keep it. They might fool us a time or two on a couple of plays, a couple of drives, or even a couple of scores. Opponents run into some big problems eventually though. The biggest problem our opponents face if they try to convince us to believe their lies is that Tennessee knows the truth and won't be separated from it. And unlike those imaginary limits or "ceilings" the teams marked as Vegas favorites (over us) trust in for their security, AD Fulmer, Coach Pruitt and everyone on his coaching staff are united with the players as a team with a vision. These Tennessee Volunteers who are running through the T together as a team on game day are prepared for a war that only Tennessee wins from start to finish, game by game, through all four quarters of tough, smart, and physical football to prove Tennessee games are wins that belong only to Tennessee.
Interesting. Spots saved for Wright, Crouch, and Bogle. Only one more take after that? We'd be very fortunate if we land those three and another "plus one".
Agreed! Coach Mathews on the show this morning said he wouldn't be surprised if another spot opened before December and signing day. In the first few minutes he said the number for the 2019 class is 21 (or 4 more for 2019's class with 17 already committed) and explained how he arrived at that number. We've got some serious talent at every position and I think this season will be a lot of fun!
