I listened to Coach Doug Mathews' show this morning (Sunday, July 29th, 2018)
and took a few notes. There were more details, but here are most
of the key points he mentioned that I was able to take down while listening.
I'll just make a blanket disclaimer to cover any typos or grammar issues that may
have gone undetected because I prioritized getting as much of the info to you
that I could so it's all raw, uncut, fresh, unedited, and all that.
Just on the off chance that someone else (not you, of course!) doesn't know or remember,
Coach Doug Mathews has ten seasons of Tennessee football coaching
experience as a running backs coach and defensive coordinator, so the following
report of his opinion based on his analysis of these players is
especially encouraging considering he's followed the recruits
as well as the current roster in practices.
He said that he won't use names of all the players who will be
contributors because competition and depth means the position
is the best focus for this type of overview, but he will mention
a few of the several players he is confident will make an impact.
There are some positions he mentioned like punter and kicker that he
didn't think needed much detail and that we are good there
based on what he has seen so far.
Coach Mathews said he loves all four defensive back commits
and that because we know Coach Pruitt is also an expert at coaching
defensive backs, he knows to recruit cornerbacks and then
move some of them inside to safety because you would rather
move cornerbacks to safety when needed than recruiting the other way
around because of the skills required at the position.
He said it was a critical area of need that was filled
with four DBs that he can see playing at any defensive back
position needed and said the current commits are hard hitters.
Coach Mathews pointed out how aside from the two graduate transfers,
there are zero seniors on offense this season. He explained because
of the relative youth (no seniors) the rebuild can be done
quickly and easily.
The toughest five game stretch Tennessee has ever had is on the schedule.
The new redshirt rule is great for coaches and players and he is very happy
that the rule was finally made official. (*The four games can be played at the beginning,
middle, end, or any combination through the season without needing to burn a redshirt.)
He said every year with every great team he's been a part of, there
were always some players who hadn't contributed much before who stepped up
and became major contributors.
Four Keys for Offense:
1. Either Chryst or Guarantano can effectively lead the team.
Games two and three will be an excellent opportunity for both
quarterbacks to get plenty of playing time.
2. Trey Smith and Jauan Jennings are both healthy and top players.
He said both are "nasty" players (used only positively of course).
3. If Chance Hall is healthy it would be such a bonus if he can get back to
just 80 or 90% of what he was as a freshman, then it will make the whole team better instantly.
4. Jahmir Johnson is "a good looking offensive tackle" and we'll be improved there.
Brandon Kennedy and the others are really good too and we'll be in good shape.
With the addition of Dominick Wood-Anderson, all of a sudden this offense instantly takes on a better look.
He says he thinks Ty Chandler will start and
London, Jordan, and Banks will all also play a lot. (He said Jeremy Banks looks much bigger
in person than he realized until he saw him and was pleasantly surprised.) He said
all the backs will probably get playing time this season.
J. Jennings, M. Callaway, B. Johnson, Palmer, Williams, and the other receivers will probably all play.
Four Keys for Defense:
1. Darren Kirkland Jr., Jonathan Kongbo, and Darrel Taylor are healthy
and really good.
2. Daniel Bituli is very solid and should be a major contributor.
Quart'e Sapp should be a big contributor. J.J. Peterson (among others) brings the opportunity to play a lot of talent.
3. The middle linebacker is the heart of the 3-4 Defense.
4. Every great defense starts down the middle.
Shy Tuttle is an excellent senior SEC nosetackle.
Kyle Phillips will step up as a leader and major contributor.
Nigel Warrior will be a major contributor and leader at safety with
Micah Abernathy and Todd Kelly, Jr. returning veteran leadership too.
Bryce Thompson, Alontae Taylor, Brandon Davis, and Kenneth George, Jr.
can all be counted on and depth is decent.
Putting it All Together
Tennessee will be more talented and better coached this season than almost any critics realize yet.
The better talent and better coaching combined means there is a big game we can win that most think we "shouldn't!"
He said several of the 17 commits should rise in recruiting rankings. There are about 4 more scholarships we can offer for 2019 (without using up any spots from the 2020 class).
(A lot of that could be review for many depending on your involvement or how you're keeping up with it all so far, but hopefully there was a gold nugget or two in there that you enjoyed.) Go Vols!
