Player development doesn't matter? Butch signed a couple top 5 classes. How'd that work out for him?

It matters for sure.

Butch shouldn’t be the standard. If he’s the standard then that’s an issue on its own.

Recruiting AND development. Get great players. Get the most out of them.

I want Top 5 classes and I want to have them reach their ceilings. It isn’t an either/or proposition. We can do both and should be able to do both.

We need to be able to consistently beat Vandy, SC, Mizzou, and KY before we start talking about reaching our ceiling. We are at rock bottom. Top 5 classes are reserved for the best of the best. We can get there but it’s going to take time and patience.

Agreed.

Yes - 9th would not be good enough given this staffs’ reputations as recruiters and the resources Tennessee offers.

You’re making some really good points in this thread. But being disappointed with a top 10 class following a 4-8 season is ridiculous. To land a top 10 class this year we will have to have Wright and Crouch. That’s 3 five stars and many more highly ranked 4 stars to get there. You can win with that class. Especially that being their first full class. He starts winning recruiting will only get better.

I’ll be disappointed if it’s not a top 10 class tho and some of these 3 stars we’ve taken have me scratching my head a little bit. But who knows, we might recruit over some of them. Or they may genuinely be better than their ranking. We’ll see.

Gotcha - if we finish top 5 on NSD there will be no concern or anything to complain about.

And again, I don’t think I’m “complaining” at this juncture either. Just pointing out that current standards aren’t going to get it done - and that we need to do better to compete. That’s all.

This whole debate seems to come down to you and some others don't want to assume that all these things will go our way and some of us are making the assumption that things will go our way. It's all up in the air right now and none of us really know which way it will fall. Understandably you guys don't want to put faith in the coaches yet cause we've all been burned the last few times. Personally I don't have a problem with putting my faith in them because there really isn't any correlation to new guys being bad because the last ones suck. They are completely different coaches with completely different backgrounds. They all seem to have better resumes and are better fits than any in the past 10 years. And my fan style is to be supportive until given reason not to be. So yes I liked Dooley until about halfway through 2012. I still like Dooley just think he's a terrible coach. And yeah I liked and supported Butch until the last third or so of 2016. Looking back though, neither one of those guys on paper at the time of the hire look like as good of a fit or coach as Pruitt does. I think we all agree on that.

So you're saying the #5 team is going to be definitively and clearly superior based on sports writers' ratings when compared to a #9 team resulting from the evaluation of Pruitt and his staff?

After how s****y our last few top 10 classes have turned out for us...I’m at the point where I don’t care too much as long as we’re in the top 15 and our staff is able to get production out of the guys we bring in. Do that and elite recruiting classes will follow.

Unless we take the Ole Miss approach and sell out for 2-3 good seasons, we’re not gonna be raking in top classes year in year out until we show we can develop the guys we bring in.

No reason to get upset here with the guy. He just wants UT to be elite. No one is wrong, just a different way of looking at recruiting.

No...he’s demanding it. Declaration of program failure shall be the penalty of not meeting said demand in the first season. :)

A lot of fans are super skeptical and just assume the worst for UT because of the last decade. I can totally see that, it’s been a complete cluster Fux the last decade. I think most fans are at the put up or shut up point of fandom. We need to see results on the field and recruiting before jumping in on Pruitt 100%. I’m actually excited about UT football again, and I feel we are finally headed in the right direction as a program. The Fulmer and Pruitt combo is just what Tennessee needed imo

If someone wants to be skeptical of the February 2019 signing class in July of 2018 and wants UT to put up or shut up, that's cool. But give them the opportunity to show results before telling them to shut up.

I've had a feeling since Pruitt's name was first mentioned for this job. I initially wanted Brohm from the start, but when I learned Pruitt was a possibility, that changed. At the risk of sounding like a middle school girl, there's just something about him. Call it the "it" factor or whatever, I've got that feeling in my gut that he CAN do great things. Let's see, like his team, if he can execute.

I think he can.

I will be honest. When rumblings of Pruitt first appeared early in the process, I was very much opposed to the idea of him being our next coach. I thought he was an unproven jerk because of all that stuff at Georgia and because DeVinner was his pal. I have totally changed my tune. When he was first hired, I was just so relieved it was not Doeren or Steele, I was happy about it. Plus, CPF really seemed to want him and that turned me some too. Since he has been here and hired his staff, I am all in. I think he is going to do great things here.

I’m just pointing out the reasons why some might not have the same amount of patience as others.

I know, Mill, and I certainly hope I didn't sound like I was attacking you in some fashion. I apologize if it came across that way.

I just think being reasonable and exercising common sense has to be considered...sure makes being a fan much more enjoyable.

No problem man, I’m on board with you. I’m super optimistic about UT football right now. I know Fulmer will do everything in his power to get football back on track. It’s just a matter of when now

If you can find me a coach that can deliver a top 5 class after a 4-8 season he can deliver a yak on the top of Mt Everest in a mankini.
