Guarantano "Erratic" at Manning Camp

Ok okay D4H and KB sound a lot alike right now... I think everyone needs to relax and let it play out... neither deserve the job outright imo! With that said I hope JT wins the job😂

Easy pal. That hurts. Didn’t say I loved JG, thought he was beautiful, was gonna win the Heisman and win 8 Super Bowls after being picked #1 overall in the nfl draft next April. Have only said he showed some good things last year (accurate, took care of the ball, strong arm, tough as hell standing in the pocket, etc) in a very difficult situation as a first year player......while also having a flaw or two (took way too many bad sacks because he appeared to either not know where to go with the ball or not willing to throw the ball away like a good QB would.....also, not anywhere near as good running with the ball as most said (D4H) or assumed) he’s gotta overcome, improve upon. I’ve tried to be balanced in my assessment and defense of JG, not dream of engaging in sexual relations with him the way D4H clearly does Dobbs.

He isn't wrong when he says that JG/QD were equally bad, or really close to it. It's tempting to say that JG is better since he is younger, that's it. They were both awful last year, admittedly playing behind a poor offensive line. Their problem last year was that they played as if they were playing behind a great offensive line that was going to give them time to throw. That's a function of bad playcalling and a lack of awareness on their part.

And how much of your analysis is based on the type of offense that Jeremy Pruitt wants to put on the field? He's going to want to go downhill. He's going to be tightening up those gaps in the offensive line and he wants and will demand execution from his new QB. Power football is already putting Gaurantano behind the 8 ball.

I don't think that'll make all that big of a difference. As I said earlier in the thread I was unimpressed with JG's running ability last year. I didn't really see "dual threat." I merely said that he could run around and make things happen better than QD could, which isn't saying much because QD's feet were in a bucket of cement.

If you think Dormady was better last year than Guarantano, as a “facilitator” or otherwise, then you either didn’t remotely pay attention or you had no idea what you were watching....if you watched. The ONLY thing QD “facilitated” better than Guarantano was getting the ball out of his hand quicker and not taking sacks. Unfortunately for QD, it culminated in 3x as many interceptions, a considerably lower pass completion percentage, fewer yards per pass attempt and, naturally, a lower passer rating. Unless you’re defining “facilitator” in your own special way that we’re not aware of, your opinion here holds no weight.

Since you asked, I remember watching GaTech, Umass, Florida, Georgia, SC, and Alabama. I also remember when Dormady went down it was reported that he had been battling a bad shoulder that went back before the season. Bad shoulder and all, he was better at the fundamentals than Guarantano.

Chryst being from Stanford is already well ahead on the learning curve in age and running a similar system. He's going to understand the kind of offensive philosophy that Knoxville might as well get used to. Running backs will be expected to provide the running game, not QBs. Play action is going to get a lot more important as well, as will hitting receivers on time and down the field.

Since you asked, I remember watching GaTech, Umass, Florida, Georgia, SC, and Alabama. I also remember when Dormady went down it was reported that he had been battling a bad shoulder that went back before the season. Bad shoulder and all, he was better at the fundamentals than Guarantano.

Neither of them were world beaters, but it is well documented that Dormady was throwing off his back foot a lot and floating it into coverage. I had a seat looking down the field vs GT. It wasn't pretty watching his reads.

Jarrett Guarantano’s performance over the weekend at the annual Manning Passing Academy was something Tennessee fans should be familiar with, according to veteran Louisiana sportswriter, broadcaster and NFL Draft analyst Mike Detillier, who watched Guarantano at the event.

Detillier spoke with former former Tennessee wide receiver and current Knoxville radio host Jayson Swain on Wednesday morning, and his scouting report on Guarantano should sound familiar: big arm, talented arm, inconsistent but working extremely hard to change that.

“I’ll be honest with you, he was a little erratic throwing the ball, but that didn’t surprise me, because he’s working with receivers that he’s never worked with,” Detillier told Swain on The Swain Event. “You come here, you don’t bring the Tennessee Volunteer wide receivers with you. He’s working with receivers from Tulane, LSU, Nicholls State, Southeastern [Louisiana].


I'm not really buying the WR explanation. If that were true, wouldn't all of the QB's at the camp be "erratic"? I hope Helton helps him a great deal, but I'm starting to think Christ was brought in for more than just "motivation".

It's not just a KB thing, posters get really defensive or critical over QBs. Doesn't bother but admit that I don't understand.
I just want the QB that gives us the best chance to win and don't care which one that is. Both have things they need to improve on and both are capable.

Didn't say Dormady was Manning but that doesn't make him Guarantano either. That was the worst SEC QB we had played all year. No pocket presence. He held the ball so long it's a wonder we didn't kill the guy.

Different staff, different outcomes. Much better coaches this time. I feel a lot better about JG coming back from MPA than I did about Dobbs. DeBord was very underrated here.

He wasn’t erratic in the Spring game. He wasn’t even erratic last season.....when he stepped up to throw the ball on time he was good. He simply wasn’t good, at all, at getting rid of the ball and not taking bad sacks. That was his issue. If JP and Helton coach him up and get him squared away there, we’re gonna have a very good SEC QB imo.

Many of JG's problems in the pocket would be resolved if he could really learn "the float" discussed in the post. He needs not to be such a static target.

Any conversation about JG versus KC and how badly we need one of them to be good is overblown.

Our offensive problems last year began and largely ended with the offensive line. If we had just a decent offensive line last year, we would've won at least 2 more games than we did.

He didn't play enough to qualify for any passing stat. I was not really including him. Who knows what he does playing the whole game anyway? He has never done it.
