The Thread Where People Argue About Kneeling in the NFL (merged)

He was at an Apple store looking at watches, mom could have been with him I guess. Either way, Brady didn't make a stink about it. He just declined to attend and he caught hell.

Guess you could be partially right. Also he missed more than one trip to the White House but this is the one I'm referring too.

I’ll ask this again. What is supposed to be accomplished by protesting at this point? What change is supposed to be brought about? Has anyone actually given answers to these questions? Or is it we just want change just because ?

I’m convinced that a much larger percentage of players than not, don’t actually really care about the protest, but are doing it out of pressure from social media or it being the trendy thing to do.

I thought the purpose of it was to create the conversation. The conversation has been created, where do we go from here.

I have an idea. How about the White House invite the team? That way the dialogue gets started, see where it go from there.

Look up Earnst's comments. If you don't know who he is, he was Obama's press secretary.

His name is Josh Earnest and I do remember his joke in January of 2015 about Tom Brady and deflate-gate that went like: "The one thing I can tell you is that for years it's been clear that there was no risk that I was going to take Tom Brady's job as quarterback of the New England Patriots," Earnest said. "But I can tell you that as of today, it's pretty clear that there is no risk of him taking my job, either." - White House Press Secretary, Josh Earnest in January of 2015.

The point of Earnest's joke (whether it was funny or not) was that Brady wasn't very good at lying - a prerequisite to be the White House Press Secretary. He was poking fun at Brady and deflate-gate but also poking a little bit of fun at himself and his job. It was rumored at the time that this comment was the real reason that Brady skipped the White House visit but there could have also been family concerns... Either way, Earnest wasn't commenting on Brady skipping the White House (this comment was made before the Patriots had even won the Super Bowl over Seattle) visit and the comment was clearly made in jest. Neither Obama or Earnest were ever critical of Brady for not attending.

I'm sure you are well aware of all of that.

They purposely pulled a political stunt

I mean... Isn't visiting the white house a political stunt in and of itself?

Trump felt slighted and lashed out like a petulant child. Is he so narcissistic to believe that everyone should find it an honor to meet him?

That’s what I’m saying. What’s the end game here? What else can be done? If there is a black guy shot by a cop it makes the 6:30 ABC news, whether it be for right or wrong. By no means is the system perfect and it never will be, but it has and continues to improve.

My favorite line from the Band of Brothers:

“We salute the rank, not the man.”

Why should they respect the position more than the person actually holding the position? Trump constantly demeans the office and goes out of his way to be unpresidential. Trump never understood the "you can't have your cake and eat it too" truism.

CIC is his rank.....all military under him must respect his rank.....earned or not......what am I missing in your reply.....or had you jumped back to the players from his military quote which you responded to?

This statement is wrong 2 times.
No.

If you believe that what you are saying is true, then you believe a gang banger that sticks a pistol in your face has earned 'respect'. I fear him, but have ZERO respect for him.

At a certain point in officer land it IS a political gig. Mostly when you get above O4. Before that, it is a bunch of guys trying to do a job to the best of their ability. The vast majority don't really care a whole lot about politics... yeah there is a little, but not an overriding concern. Of course I speak having come from the brown shoe side of the Navy. Most of the guys I knew wanted to fly airplanes and didn't gaf about politics.

Eidt: I was a bit dyslexic on this this morning. I read the first part of Septic's post backward. I still stand by MY post however.

CIC is his given title and though he has ultimate authority over the US Armed Forces, he holds no military rank. Thus, the politician is not a military officer.

Yea, if you have a different version feel free to post it. But this is the version being reported.

I forgot to add that there was going to be 2-3 players, the owner, and the mascot...

I don't know the veracity of your claimed version of events but if we're being fair...

If by acting a pompous ass and still winning an election to the highest office on the planet doesn't count, then yes.

Sure so stop them altogether then

They though they were going to pull a stunt after asking for 80 security clearances then change the date when he would be out of town, he isn't going to let those punks treat him like a b***h

Everybody is placing the onus on the players. Is it too much to ask of the POTUS to act like an adult?

Seems to me that after hearing that a large portion of the players were not going to attend, Trump could have simple said, "I look forward to welcoming the Eagle that are planning on being in attendance and would like to reach out to those not attending to reconsider as I am genuinely interested in your view point. Let's have a meaningful discussion."

At that point, Trump has been the bigger man and shifted 100% of the blame to the players who still refused.

Nope, because that's exactly what you guys wanted. You wanted the photo op and the opportunity to say, look Trump only had 5 guys show up. Bla bla crowd size, bla bla ego.....

He did the right thing.

In a perfect world, maybe. However, the press and the left would have had a field day with the photo op of Trump standing with 3 or 4 white guys from the Eagles.

When has Trump ever been the bigger man in a dispute? It's much more a part of his makeup to be combative and either call names or play the victim. He never takes the high road. He is driven by a fragile ego.
