Spring Ball showed me 9 wins for 2018

Butch Jones didn't tank this team in a single season, and Jeremy Pruitt is not going to rebuild it in 9 months. There's a reason most new HC's show the most improvement in year two.

Actually he did tank it in one season. That is EXACTLY what happened sir. 7-6, 9-4, 9-4,....4-8😕.

So...

Those 9-4 teams should have been 11 win teams.

It's about talent, coaching, experience, and team makeup.

This team isn't deep. But there is some cream at the top.

9 wins lol your high. 4-8 or 5-7 this season your setting yourself up for major disappointment expecting 9 wins. I just hope we can beat Vandy and Kentucky this year

Who’s “we”? You never have admitted who your actual team is.

The fact that you think that Butch's failing only occurred in 2017 says volumes about your understanding of football.

Keep chipping at that rock.

So many are so glad the Butch is gone due to his coaching, schemes and game plans.

CJP is coming in and changing the schemes and game plans. Will there be a curve on running them to perfection? Sure. These changes alone nets us those 5 extra wins compared to last year.

Too many have bought into the idea that this year is a continuation of last year. It just isn't.

CJP won't make it easy to figure out what we will be doing.

Against SC on the last play Butch said everybody knew what was coming. Like he was proud of that.

I doubt if CJP's game plan will be so simple that we all know what's coming.

It's not nuts to expect to beat the teams with equal or less talent. It's not nuts to expect us to play over our heads a game or two either.

This will be a fun and exciting season. I'm glad our team has this summer to get ready for this fall.

Go Vols!

I think you're underestimating the
learning curve on the switch to the 3-4.

It went horribly last time the Vols tried it.

Not even going to go there with you.

Butch recruited many plug and play players. And there was some coaching going on. Just not from him, nor at a high level overall.

9-4,9-4,...4-8 .
Yes he screwed it up all in one year. He had such a short leash because of his ever apparent lack of " understanding of football". Compared to his peers.

So...EXPLAIN why this isn't a 9 win team.

The difference between best case and worst case scenarios.

Dooley hired a lb coach as his dc. I don't even remember any asst. coaches. And he didn't have the right players for the job.

Pruitt, on the other hand, made a name for himself coordinating 3-4 defenses. The coaches he hired are accomplished in the 3-4 scheme and the athletes here are better suited for it's demands.

So, while there is a formidable learning curve, Dooley and Pruitt represent the worst and best case scenarios.

Better players this time around.
And a coach who understands it much more intimately. Maggit got hurt and our pass rush disappeared. Mo couch became suspended. Blah...

D Taylor, J Peterson, and J Allen will give us a pass rush.

Gooden needs to own tbe nose tackle spot. Move Shy out to DT.

Your blood sugar’s off. I’m objective...read better. I don’t MOAN...I MOCK those that do! I don’t know what your beer analogy is about...doubt you do. Please stop me from “sliding”...awesome poster man guy.

And I was as active against Schiano as anybody that wasn’t on campus...know more. :)

Why do you mock people?

Unless Schiano and Pruitt would have no effect on the product, or produce the same one, it would seem we did influence it.

How many of those other 9 opponents have entirely new coaching staffs, and are installing new systems on both sides of the ball? One, Florida, and whether you want to admit it or not, they do out talent us at the moment.

You are setting yourself up for collosal disappointment if you are expecting 9 wins in this scenario.
Imo, this team learning a new system and with few injuries should be better than playing in Jones system another year. Last year's team couldve went 7 and 5 last year if the team couldve capitalized on a few plays. That was with terrible coaching and injuries. With the players coming in and the players returning along with solid fundamental coaching this team should at least be better than that. It's not like they knew jones system either...

Seriously? For many of same reasons we never won 9 games in the regular season under Butch.

Lack of development under the previous coaching staff. Lack of a qualified OLine coach in the entirety of Butch Jones Tenure. Lack of a qualified QB coach after the exodus of Mike Bajakian. Lack of a quality S&C program under the Butch.

Now, couple those issues with a new first time HC, who is implementing a new offensive and defensive systems, and has to try and rectify the poor development from the last coaching staff.

So yeah, with the schedule we have in playing Auburn and West Virginia on top of already having Alabama, Georgia, and Florida, I'd say 9 wins is a pipe dream.

I think 7 wins is possible this year, but we still have deficiencies at QB, unless Chryst comes in and kills it, and at OLine, that are not going to just disappear before September.

9 Wins requires us to win an opener against a good West Virginia team, at a neutral location, 3 cupcake games, and five conference games out of Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Florida, Kentucky, Missouri, USCe and Vandy. The chance of us winning against Alabama, Georgia , or Auburn is pretty much zero considering Alabama is the only home game out of the three. Which means we have to win against all 5 of our other SECe opponents. Is it possible, sure, but it's not probable.

Problem is...when your team stinks, all you see is their problems and deficiencies.

UGA and Bama are the most talented and balanced teams. Auburn gets the nod over TN as well.

But the other 9 teams we play...are NOT more talented than is. Equal to? Sure...

So I'm saying...we have a chance in 9 of our twelve games. And in those 9 games we have the better coaching staff each game

Winning games, as we all know, is SO much more than just about having more talent. Otherwise, 4-8/0-8 doesn’t happen last year since we were supposedly more talented than everyone we played other than 3-4 teams.

Imho, the biggest problem with this team is it’s mindset and general culture. It just doesn’t compete the way it needs to....and when you combine it with being poorly coached over the last few years with regards to fundamentals and technique, you get a pretty talented team losing 8 games. Kongbo is the poster child for this imo. He’s obviously physically talented, but he plays with no technique, no awareness, no smarts.

True, but Pruitt never took over a defense that wasn't already running a 3-4. This will be his first time converting the front 7.

Wholeheartedly agree.
Kongbo is the prime example.

Which is why I look for new blood to get thrown in the fire early rather than playing the bad habit but talented veteran the whole way.

Fotr example.
Peterson will beat out Austin Smith.
Theo Jackson beats out TK imo as well

So Florida has a brand new coaching staff too btw....

Losing to West Virgina wouldn't surprise me. But I like how we match up with the team I think we will field. Should have beaten South Carolina last year

You ran over all those reasons of what Butch did...
Which shows me you (circling back to the original point of the thread) that you don't see nor understand the change that has already happened thus far. In 5 months...

This team is already stronger.
Better situated personnel.
Better coached.
And most of it is just Pruitt taking out the distractions (loud music) and putting players where they best fit.

Jarret Gauratano has improved in his progression and ball placement
The line run-blocks better already.

You'll see...no real use in debating with someone who can't notice the present situation

There’s a difference in uniting to cause an outrage the inspired politicians and business owner to pitch in. THAT led to Schiano not getting hired and a few guys on a message board demanding our new coach win a non-consensus mandated number of games or the university is going to pay them to go away and we start all over. Everything is set in place. Whine or be optimistic, it’s out of our hands right now. The coaches recruit and develop the players to win...or they don’t. We have NO EFFECT.
