Nope they’re dumbass Austin liberals. They’re clueless.

That's a good point. They obviously know their customer extremely well (as evidenced by the fact that they've been able to turn their cooler/cup company into a lifestyle brand) but I'm sure they are feeling some pressure locally and/or from investors to do something.

I think Yeti has positioned itself more as a cup company for the soccer mom types.

No, the urban soccer mom/yuppies.

Maybe now you can include them in it too, but in the early days of the company they targeted serious hunters; people who are actually going to get the most use of the cooler.

Most of the people I see with Yetis now are yuppie/frat boy types who like to haul them around to tailgates and such. Some hunters have them, but it sounds like most of them have figured out that there are tons of coolers out there that do the same thing for half the price.

Yep.

I have two of their soft side coolers and they are pretty dang nice for a day on the lake. But we don't have any of their tumblers or cups.

Their tumblers are nice. I’ve got one. No way in hell I’d pay for a cooler.

Their own yanking of their IPO is telling. They’ve peaked. And just alienated their base.

Might pick a cooler up on close out soon who knows.

Yeah. Yeti is toast. give it about a year or less.

I wouldn't pay for a tumbler either, although I do have multiple tumblers people have given me as gifts. I like them, but they aren't worth $30-35. I get the most use out of them at the beach; they work as advertised, but 99% of the time I don't need a cup that keeps a drink hot/cold for hours and hours at a time.

The problem with Yeti's business model is that you only need so many coolers or cups. A cup/cooler isn't like a phone, computer, or some other device - it isn't like technological upgrades are consistently making better coolers.

They are overpriced as hell. I don't know why anyone pays for them. Pelican and Engel are every bit as good and $50-$100 cheaper.

I'm a fan of the RTIC brand but any of the rotomolded coolers are pretty much the same and are good.

Anyone who buys the Yeti thinking it's 'better' is making a costly mistake.

There's a youtube video of a guy doing side by side comparisons of a $12 Ozark Trail stainless tumbler and the $50 Yeti. No meaningful performance difference.

They won’t be toast but I don’t get the idea of investing in a space where your competitors have copied your mousetrap. I don’t think the concept was a bad one, but the element of surprise is gone. Unless you’re headed 100 miles off the coast to chase fish I don’t think you’ll ever realize the potential of the products.

Coolers like these are great for camping, my Orion 65 will hold 40lbs of ice for days in the summer heat.

If Yeti succeeds or fails now, it'll hinge on the success or failure on them as a lifestyle brand. It isn't about performance of the product anymore, because there isn't any discernible performance difference between them and their cheaper competitors. I think at first the people buying their products were serious hunters/fishers that actually used the stuff to its potential. Now there are tons of alternatives that do the same thing much cheaper. Yeti can obviously respond to that by lowering prices, but that presumably hurts margins (I'm assuming they probably can't make the coolers any more cheaply than they already are), and when you're trying to go public that'll make people run the other direction real quick.

I think it is telling that if you go to their website, they sell hats, t-shirts, chairs, etc. branded with their logo right alongside the cups and coolers. Their brand is their biggest asset (no different than a company like Apple or Coca-Cola) and they can only command the high price if you maintain your standing as a brand.

But unlike Apple or Coke, Yeti’s product is neither consumable or subject to obscelensce. Once everyone who wants one has one you’re in trouble. See GoPro for a recent example.
