The starting D-Line is good and will make our O-like much better for having to work against them on the regular. Now if we have any injuries on either line...

Honestly, I really like our defense outside of the huge ?? at CB.

D-Line starting group is the best group on our defense, but also the thinnest as we don’t really have any experienced depth there. If Tuttle stays healthy, he will be drafted in the top 3 rounds. He is so good. Kongbo and Phillips are also very suited to being 3-4 DEs/ plating the . I expect big things from that starting group.

LB is solid and has a few exchangeable pieces. Getting Taylor away from the OTs so that he can utilize his athleticism even more to get to the QB is a no brainer. We know what we have if we get a healthy Kirkland and Bituli. Sapp makes plays even if he doesn’t have prototypical size. The addition of Peterson and possible emergence of guys like Ignont and Bates has this group as probably our deepest.

Safety has a star in Warrior and then a couple guys that can fill that other spot— I think Theo Jackson could be a player there, he has looked pretty good so far. TKjr is a leader and if he can get healthy and regain some of his lost speed with better S&C could make things happen. Abernathy is not very physical, but he is very athletic.

At CB Buchanan has been consistent, but I have no clue what we have there after that. We have a lot of guys that could be the man, but I really just don’t know who is going to be the one to step up and who will be ready to be the third man up. There is talent available, but this far— maybe due to schemes— it has been squandered. Pruitt likes for his CBs to play more press man. I tend to like tight man coverage more myself, so this is good with me. It’s much better than the near 10 yards of buffer our DBs have given WRs over the last couple years. Our guys have to get used to this philosophy change though because if you allow the WR to release from the line of scrimmage too easily they will burn you.

Labruzza and Shamburger (him in particular) should be consistent contributors in the def backfield, with Shamburger looking like the guy that gets the 'Star' role in this defense.

i think there's a lot of recognizable names in this defense that came in with some hype, and we've not seen a lot of it realized. and some more talent coming in this summer, to hopefully bolster the group as a whole. so i agree with you on the one hand.

on the other hand, we still need to see it come together, and this is where i'd throw some caution out....this is a new defensive scheme, with new personnel groupings, that everyone basically has to learn from the ground up...schematically, communication, techniques etc....

that said, Pruitt is adamant about keeping it simple, so hopefully that's shortening the curve for these guys.

our schedule is front loaded, so it's gonna be a trial by fire, and i think if we can stay relatively healthy, by the time we get to the 2nd half of the season, we may see an improved unit over all.

of course i've thought that the last two years, and in both cases, we wound up being epically bad against the back half of our schedule.

health will be key.

Well, I won’t be on campus or in the press box at UT games any more, so hopefully that gives them some good juju.

agreed, was watching some of the Toronto game the other night, and i forget who it was, but he had a break away, beat the defender, was just outside the crease, and slashed to his left, and had the net all to himself...except one thing...he forgot the puck.

so yeah, really difficult to do.

i've only gotten in to Hockey in the last 15 years. Growing up in MS, it really wasn't a thing.....:p

my wife is from pittsburgh, and we go to pens games whenever we can when we visit her family. so it's been easy to get in to....and the pens haven't sucked, so that's made it even easier...great game though.

especially post season play....

I’ve forgotten the puck many of times lol

It’s funny how a good local sports team can impact the area. I grew up in Raleigh, NC and Hockey was never big there either until the Hurricanes started winning with Laviolette as coach. I was already playing in the local youth leagues but the 2-3 years that the Canes were winning caused the youth leagues to have a waiting list because so many kids were wanting to play after seeing playoff hockey. Now the sport is huge in the Raleigh area and there are 3-4 different ice arenas to play at. Nashville will be the same way.

Oh, and I hope the Preds meet the Pens in the final again. We need revenge :)

well, 7-0 game 1 not withstanding, i'm not convinced we make it to the cup final this year. i think Boston and Washington are really good (though if we get Washington in the 2nd round, i'm calling that series now lol). and tampa may be the team to beat when all is said and done.

you may get your cup this year, but i don't think it will be at the expense of the pens.

if it's Washington and Nashville, i'll be pulling for the preds for sure.

I just listened to this week’s audible podcast with Stewart Mandell and Bruce Feldman. Mandell visited Tennessee and watched a practice and visited coaches. When asked to essentially compare Tennessee to his other stops at Bama, Clemson and Georgia, he said Tennessee is a complete bottoms up rebuild and he wouldn’t be surprised at another 4-8 season. He said the cupboard is completely bare and implied the coaches have very low expectations.

Lol "Yeah, compared to championship-level teams, Tennessee is sucks"...

How about they compare the team now to like, other currently more evenly matched teams, like Mizzou or Purdue or Duke or something.. It hurts to compare us to any of those teams, but it gives us better context than "Let's compare a down team to the best in the country". Dumbasses

and i'm in Charlotte, so i remember those cup finals with the hurricanes well. i don't think this part of the state ever got 'the fever' like the triangle did, but it was cool. and youth hockey here has grow a ton as well as a result. that, and we have so many transplants from NY, PA, NJ etc....

this area is no longer just ACC hoops or nascar country in other words.

Swanson - can you visit the DJ Burns thread in the hoops forum. Need some 247 help.

From GT 247...

We caught up with Rock Hill, South Carolina center D.J. Burns and his mom Wednesday night. Both were working late. D.J. was working on his shooting and mom was getting some work in at school. Both mom and D.J. gave us their thoughts on how recruiting was going thus far. “I think it is going very well,” said Mrs. Burns. D.J agreed with mom. “I am enjoying the process so far,” said D.J.

New schools continue to offer D.J. College of Charleston, Davidson, South Carolina, and Western Kentucky are the latest to offer. There are additional schools that are showing interest but haven’t offered. “Ohio State, Missouri, North Carolina State and Kansas are showing a lot of interest so far,” both replied.

Both feel that there are five schools that are showing D.J. the most interest. They both receive mail, phone calls, and messages on social media. “Those would be Tennessee, South Carolina, Georgia Tech, Virginia and Georgia, “said Mrs. Burns. Georgia Tech Coach Josh Pastner is one coach that has stood out to Mrs. Burns. “Coach Pastner is very passionate about his job and has been a wonderful coach to watch recruit. You can tell he is very honest and open and he’s gotten our attention. We plan on visiting them in the summer.”

D.J. has already taken an official visit to Tennessee. “A lot of schools are trying to get us to visit during the AAU season but with his work schedule, I don’t see how D.J. can do it.” Look for D.J. to take his visits after the AAU season and before he goes back to school. Getting to know the chaplain and strength and conditioning coaches will be important to D.J. in choosing a school. “Head coaches and assistants come and go. We understand recruiting is a business now. It always seems that the chaplain and the strength and conditioning coaches will stay if the staff changes,” said Mrs. Burns. .” D.J. hopes to have his decision made by the end of the summer. “That way, my last year will be playing basketball.”

Mrs. Burns feels that Georgia Tech has two of the best in the country. She has not only seen that first hand but has also heard that from former players and coaches at other schools. “Coach (Derrick) Moore can give some invigorating speeches.”

D.J. is close friends with AAU teammate and Buford wing Marcus Watson. “We get along good and have talked about going to the same college,” said D.J. “D.J. and Marcus got to be good friends through AAU and families sticking together,” said Mrs. Burns. In-home visits will also be a part of the schedule foe D.J. and his mom. At this time, they are not sure of the dates for those visits. “Coach Pastner is eager to get in home and talk about Georgia Tech. He never stops recruiting and coaching. That is a good man,” both replied. Look for D.J. to sign in November. With excellent grades, he is also thinking over the possibility of enrolling early but he is not sure if he wants to do that.

There is a good size UK basketball following in the area of Charlotte that I live in. Don't understand that one.

eh,i see some UK around town. but no more than i do anyone else. in the SEC, i see more USCe, GA, FL and TN than KY.

and of course all the UNC bball fans that just so happen to be Bama football fans.

those guys suck.

I just checked ticket prices for our game against WVU in football. $167 for cheapest seats in the nosebleeds. Seems a bit too high. Hopefully they come down so I can afford to go.

For my work, we have 2 UT fans (me and the COO), 1 UF, 1 Va Tech, 1 UGA, 1 Bammer (my immediate boss, however he is about as casual of a fan as casual can get) and a hand full of Clemson and USC.

I've seen a few other UT fans while driving around which is nice.

The triangle was definitely fired up about it. Not quite on Nashville’s level but it was still electric throughout the city during their playoff runs.

The East will be interesting to follow this year. I can see Tampa, Boston, Washington and Pittsburgh all winning. I’d say Washington has least chance just because they always blow it in the 2nd roundc, especially if they play the Pens like you said lol

tired narrative.

you can argue that we will have a brand new staff, 1st time they've ever worked together as a unit, coaching players that in some cases haven't played together, that are all learning new schemes on both sides of the ball, whilst also going thru a completely differen s&C program.....AGAIN.

bottom line, for as many reasons people say this kind of crap, there's equal, if not more, reason to say it goes bad.

there's a lot of questions that need to be answered.

and if we got them all right, then yes, this team is probably capable of 8 wins (maybe more).

but we won't get them all right, and we have no idea how the injury bug affects this team, especially on the offensive line.

statements like this require zero thought, apply zero context, and are just plain lazy.

Amen, amen and amen..

Yeah I'm disappointed in this as well. There really are no "nosebleed" seats at Bank of America stadium - all the seats offer a great view.

That said... while I can afford it, I would feel sick to my stomach actually paying 400-500+ total for tickets/concessions to go to a football game. If I were to pay that much, I'd rather see them play against a rival.

So while I might change my mind and get tickets down the line, right now my thinking is I'll simply pass and instead opt to watch the game at home. 50+ inch HD TVs make at home experiences pretty enjoyable anyways.

well i think Nashville is a better overall city than Raleigh, and it's down town area is more suited to the spectacle of it all vs. Raleigh. but i heard the atmosphere in the arena, and tailgaiting outside was top notch when the canes were in it.

as for the East, agree. very competitive. hard to see us getting there again. law of averages and all.......but i ain't against it.

i look at the predz, kinda like i did the pens back when they played the red wings in the final back in 06/07, and lost, and then came back and beat them in the finals the next season.

could see the same happening for you guys this time around, regardless of who you play.
