Pruitt declined to really evaluate his quarterbacks Saturday, saying he needed to watch the film, but sources say Jarrett Guarantano had an up-and-down afternoon. The redshirt sophomore delivered a couple of strikes for long touchdowns and has improved his accuracy some, but JG also had a couple bad interceptions. Anticipation, timing and footwork remain a work in progress. Backup Will McBride was solid and did move the No. 2 offense well at times.

* The best playmakers Saturday were Ty Chandler, who struggled to gain traction in the interior run game (more later) but was explosive on wide/stretch runs, freshman wideout Alontae Taylor and Marquez Callaway. Per sources, Chandler continues to earn more and more trust with the staff as the lead back.

* In a bit of a surprise, Trey Coleman got a lot of work behind Chandler as the No. 2 tailback. The Vols like Coleman's size, toughness and ability to play multiple downs.

Overall, the run game was hit or miss. Chandler & Co., had the best success on stretch plays and cut-backs. Not surprisingly, things were quite difficult with the inside runs. Shy Tuttle and Jonathan Kongbo were dominant at times, as Tuttle did what a nose tackle is supposed to do in controlling the interior and forcing the play one way.

Tuttle has been steadily improving this spring, and it’s easy to forget that this is his first full spring practice after missing the last two years rehabbing significant injuries. The Vols ran a lot of 3-man fronts Saturday with Kongbo, Tuttle and Kyle Phillips, who also flashed at times. Freshman Greg Emerson was a handful for the 2s, routinely getting into the backfield.

The OL was shorthanded Saturday, and the scrimmage was a bit of a baptism by fire for early enrollees Jerome Carvin and Ollie Lane, who both got a ton of reps. Senior left tackle Drew Richmond was solid at times in the run game, but remains very inconsistent in pass protection. Darrell Taylor made some plays off the edge.

* Pruitt was frustrated by Tennessee’s tackling Saturday, and it sounds like the linebackers were up-and-down. Will Ignont and Quart’e Sapp got the bulk of the run with the 1s inside, but the rest of the backups struggled transitioning in the new scheme (Shanon Reid, Solon Page).

* Tennessee’s secondary had a lot of trouble Saturday. As expected, Nigel Warrior was the standout, but multiple sources did note that Malik Gray, recently moved to CB, made some plays, too, including a near pick-6. Aside from Gray, only Baylen Buchanan, who we’ve noted all spring has cemented himself with the 1s, was solid at CB. The junior has had a really strong spring to date.

I’m interested in this too.

Anyone know his current weight? Roster lists him at 6’3? Coming out of HS was a WR prospect so assuming his hands are pretty descent.

I like the idea of bigger backs and he seems to fit right in with that line of thinking. Who knows, maybe he can be a really good player there.

What roster? The roster on the official website doesn’t have height and weight.

And big gulps!

So Gray and Buchanan are the starting corners as of now?

I said before spring practice that Baylen Buchanan would be our #1 corner. He's special. Reminds me of 90s cornerback Eric Davis.

I'm pleasantly surprised Maliek Gray is doing well at corner. If he can live up to his recruiting hype, we might actually have a solid secondary this year.

Buchanan and Warrior are studs. We need 3 other DBs to emerge.
