Overall, the run game was hit or miss. Chandler & Co., had the best success on stretch plays and cut-backs. Not surprisingly, things were quite difficult with the inside runs. Shy Tuttle and Jonathan Kongbo were dominant at times, as Tuttle did what a nose tackle is supposed to do in controlling the interior and forcing the play one way.
Tuttle has been steadily improving this spring, and its easy to forget that this is his first full spring practice after missing the last two years rehabbing significant injuries. The Vols ran a lot of 3-man fronts Saturday with Kongbo, Tuttle and Kyle Phillips, who also flashed at times. Freshman Greg Emerson was a handful for the 2s, routinely getting into the backfield.
The OL was shorthanded Saturday, and the scrimmage was a bit of a baptism by fire for early enrollees Jerome Carvin and Ollie Lane, who both got a ton of reps. Senior left tackle Drew Richmond was solid at times in the run game, but remains very inconsistent in pass protection. Darrell Taylor made some plays off the edge.
* Pruitt was frustrated by Tennessees tackling Saturday, and it sounds like the linebackers were up-and-down. Will Ignont and Quarte Sapp got the bulk of the run with the 1s inside, but the rest of the backups struggled transitioning in the new scheme (Shanon Reid, Solon Page).
* Tennessees secondary had a lot of trouble Saturday. As expected, Nigel Warrior was the standout, but multiple sources did note that Malik Gray, recently moved to CB, made some plays, too, including a near pick-6. Aside from Gray, only Baylen Buchanan, who weve noted all spring has cemented himself with the 1s, was solid at CB. The junior has had a really strong spring to date.
