JG played that way. I believe it was by design. Excited to see what he can do with the shackles off.
Butch's gameplan was to dump it off in the backfield, get the ball out quick (typically before routes developed). Combine that with opponents' DL being behind our OL within 2 seconds, I'm surprised 1) JG is still in one piece and 2) that he didn't have way more turnovers. That timid QB play was definitely by design.
Alabama and Georgia can get away with crap numbers from their QB's because they lean so heavily on the run game. Butch didn't know that we don't have a Bama/Georgia-esque ground game and that we'd need to open it up downfield more. And/or he just flat failed to develop our OL and WR's to be capable of doing that.
Exactly. So Jumper being in the game to line them up correctly might have been an overstatement, or just more BS?
Heres an incredible stat in the Southeastern Conference entering the 2018 season, the league features 10 new offensive coordinators (counting Floridas co-OCs as two). Following so much turnover at the position, heres something to know about each of the top offensive minds in the league this season.
Tyson Helton Tennessee
Known by most for his development of USC quarterback Sam Darnold, a more traditional pro-style passer, into a projected first-round selection in the 2018 NFL Draft, Tyson Helton also has experience working with dual-threat quarterbacks. While coaching at UAB, Helton worked with future NFL quarterback Joe Webb. During that time, Webb became the first player in NCAA history to throw for 2,000 yards or more and rush for 1,000 yards or more in consecutive seasons. That experience could serve Helton well in Knoxville over the next few seasons as Jarrett Guarantano possess the tools to develop into a similar threat for the Volunteer offense.
Random thought. This team has some similarities to the 2009 team. Both with excellent coaching staffs (at least on paper), both with some talent but not without a couple holes, and both in first years of a new coach.
Your take: 2009 team or 2018 team?
2009 easily. Dan Williams, Eric Berry, Montario Hardesty, Bryce Brown, Chris Scott, Jaq Mclendon, Luke stocker, Denarious Moore, All NFL players.
The team was loaded. Only winning 7 games was a let down. That team shouldve been 9-3.
