So, their defenses really weren't any good because their offenses also sucked? That really does not prove very much, IMO

The bigger factor, IMO, is that Franklin’s offensive style (at least before he brought in Moorehead) often included trying to slow games down and keep opposing offenses off the field (granted, he was more successful doing this at Vandy than at PSU, which is a big part of the reason he was pressured to find a great OC and hand over the reigns to the offense heading into 2016). That benefits a DC in a lot of ways.

Then when you take into account that PSU actually improved defensively after he left and Pry became full time DC, it definitely raises some questions about how much of his success can be attributed to favorable conditions and how much should be attributed to Shoop’s purported football genius.

I’m not sure I see his defenses being as bad at MSU as they were here because I think our staff issue was an especially toxic situation the last two years under Butch. But I don’t expect to see him fielding top 15 defenses again anytime soon either. Unless it’s one of those misleading stats like our pass defense being top 10 last year.

Watching the practice videos and the O Line looks exhausted going through drills. Not sure what to make of this observation - lack of depth, being worked in practice like never before.

Also, Bates looks noticeably bigger. Looks like a linebacker. All the LBs look bigger.

I choose to forget who Shoop was and is. All hat and no cattle at UT, which is the only place I care about. Good luck to him and Moorhead at MSU. Hope they don't lose less than 10 games a season.

I am a full fledged member of "P&J's Wackos" now. Aight. Just need somebody to design and sell me a T-shirt.

Nice post.

i think, this, probably. even if Smith comes back, and we get a couple guys back, we're still gonna be thin, so this group will have to be pretty well conditioned if they stand a chance at making thru an entire season.

Speaking of Princeton Fant....

Could someone refresh my memory on his recruitment? What did he play in high school?

Some early reports seemed to suggest he was the best looking runningback. I wonder if that was as a pure running back (seems Ty Chandler would be that guy but idk), or more as just a very good looking H-Back utility knife guy - blocking back, receiver out of the backfield, etc.

I’m interested in this too.

Anyone know his current weight? Roster lists him at 6’3? Coming out of HS was a WR prospect so assuming his hands are pretty descent.

I like the idea of bigger backs and he seems to fit right in with that line of thinking. Who knows, maybe he can be a really good player there.

Didn’t get to watch the game last night but saw the replay of the end of the game just now and that’s ridiculous. No way that was goaltender interference.

The entire league is questioning the call. Rigged like WWE. We clinch the West last night and Florida would be eliminated. That call keeps multiple fan bases interested in Final games. Huge conspiracy

He was yoked as a WR in high school. Big dude. Missed a lot of junior year due to injury, began to get some hype, committed and then injured again... maybe in the first or second game

Was a massive WR. Injury forced Greyshirt situation. Was getting high praise from camps summer prior to Senior year in HS. Very surprised and interested to see him at RB.

I saw him in HS and he looked like a TE. Reminded me of Jason croom.

I have no idea how he plays a traditional RB. JMO

I actually agree with Bruin....

Croom played at like 245 right?

Last UT roster update had Fant at 6’3 216 I believe. I would think he could get to 225 or so. I’ve never seen the kid so have no idea what his body type looks like. Interesting experiment here.

Big kid.

I was comparing them as incoming freshmen.

What did croom weigh as a freshmen?

jeez. he looks bigger than croom for sure.

i think what you see there is your h back/full back........type player. and if he can catch, even better. could definitely see him as part of a "heavy" package in short yardage situations.

he's bigger than him, but you could maybe see him being utilized like a Mike Tolbert type guy out of the backfield.
