Sure they can, subject to FCC regulations, of course. The problem with Sinclair is their ownership is becoming too widespread in viewership since their purchase of Tribune Media and their 42 stations in such major markets as L.A. and New York. This major acquisition of local affiliates exceeds current FCC ownership limits. Sinclair has said that it's considering selling some of their stations to meet the FCC's national audience limit - but they haven't yet. Sinclair's increased (and very obvious) number of must read commentary pieces to their affiliates emphasizes the need for the enforcement of these regulations.
Trump and Republicans can complain aborut bias on cable and national news all they want... but that bias is currently being more than counter-balanced by the right wing bias we are seeing from local affiliates owned by Sinclair. In short, the accusation of MSM bias is a myth.
Sinclair responds. Apparently this statement is tied to results from a research initiative they have been conducting. The memo is below. It begins with For the record so this obviously isnt intended to be an internal memo.
Memo from Sinclair SVP Scott Livingston to Sinclair newsrooms on Monday:
Hopefully, this is sincere. I like what he's saying.
They own 173 stations out of 1780 full-power, commercial TV stations in the US.
i would like to believe people have the ability to see through the sinclair media statements as the propaganda they are. It further pushes the idea of "news i don't like is fake news." this is trump's demagogues' path to discrediting any resistance to the regime.
This is a practice of state run media. Dangerous path our society is heading down.
I don't either. I don't see how it's any different than the publisher of the NYT making a statement.
To Our Readers, From the Publisher and Executive Editor - The New York Times
It's like the TV equivalent - instead of having the statement printed in every copy of the NY Times, it's read on every broadcast.
I didn't have a problem with the NYT making a statement that way I don't have a problem with Sinclair making a statement via it's anchors. This seems like drummed up outrage only because the left thinks it's part of some kind of Trump conspiracy.

Does anyone have a problem with what the statement was?
(A) Unfortunately, some members of the media use their platforms to push their own personal bias and agenda to control exactly what people think This is extremely dangerous to a democracy.

I agree. If you just read the initial script and read Livingstons memo the content rings pretty clear.
But weve gotten to the point that there MUST be a deeper agenda!
Maybe they would just like to reaffirm to their viewers that they want to get back to factual news reporting.
Notice that many of the Sinclair affiliates are CNN etc.,. I am guessing they dont like being called out frankly. Why not take it as a challenge to put out stories of which the veracity is unquestionable instead of a bunch of unnamed sources?
There is a lot of reporting that the local news anchors forced to read this are very unhappy about it. They were even told what to wear. Some have expressed worry that their own credibility is being compromised and that it will hurt their chances at employment at other stations down the road if they have no backbone and read the alt right garbage Sinclair told them to read.

Then why didnt they complain before when the other national scripted media was flowed down to them? You really wanna sell this one as unique?
And while youre googling about all these butthurt local broadcasters do some research into the work Sinclair recently did with Magid Associates which is apparently the source driving this statement.
Could it actually be possible that Sinclair has conducted some research and is acting on the results of that data?... nah its gotta be right wing propaganda.
Jees...
