Hyams was on 104.5 this morning and they were talking about Pruitt trying to lower expectations because he doesn’t praise the players a lot. I was thinking, you guys are seriously not paying attention if you think Pruitt is that type of coach.

I certainly don't pay attention to Hyams.

That said, Pruitt is a winner, he has won everywhere that he's coached, and he will expect to win at UT too.

Three things we learned in the Vols second week of spring ball:
1. The receivers are off to a good start – New receivers coach David Johnson is without his most proven playmaker in Jauan Jennings, but the receiving corps has had a good first two weeks. Latrell Williams, who has not been healthy to this point in his career, has shown his speed. Marquez Callaway and Brandon Johnson have made some plays. The biggest surprise to this point has been newcomer Alontae Taylor. Taylor has displayed explosiveness and, in adding nearly 10 pounds since January, is more physical that expected. Taylor is by no means a refined product as he makes the adjustment to receiver. However, he's off to a really good start. The other aid to the receivers is the coaching of Johnson, a demanding veteran who has focused on the details of the position the first two weeks.

2. Cornerback is the biggest question mark on the roster – The Tyler Byrd experiment doesn't seem to have much traction and Tennessee's needs at corner are concerning enough that Jeremy Pruitt took junior college defensive back Kenneth George a week ago. George has played one season of defensive back after playing little to no football in high school. That clearly shows Tennessee's need in the defensive backfield. Baylen Buchanan has made a few plays. Shawn Shamburger has been working at the nickel position. Carlin Fils-Aime has had some bright spots in his move to defense. However, the reality is that Tennessee doesn't have enough bodies at the cornerback position, which is why that position is and will be the biggest concern heading into the fall.

3. Pruitt still setting his standard – Pruitt continues to show he's trying to establish his standards in his program. On Saturday, Pruitt was asked who's leading his offensive line. Pruitt said Will Friend. Pruitt has talked about players having to adjust to his style of meetings and his way of doing things. Pruitt was mad on Tuesday because his team didn't come ready to play. For Pruitt, it's all about setting his expectations. There may be no better example than what injured players have to do when the rehab on the side instead of practicing.

“Craig Fitzgerald is doing a nice job with them over on that side, and I’ll tell you, most of them would rather practice than to be over there and be inside with him, I can assure you that.”

Any practice observer will tell you that the rehab work is a very serious workout.

Hyams continues to annoy. I wish he'd move away.

You could hear his frustration over the closed practices and lack of access.

I pretty much agree with all of this and think 2014 isn’t a bad comparison for our offense. I’m not sure we have someone like Dobbs in the backfield who can make the OL appear better than it actually is and erase their mistakes, though.

I think our upside could be the 2016 offense with the 2015 defense. If we could get close to those performance levels I could see 9 wins in the regular season and I guess I'm open to thinking that's possible. These novel ideas of developing all of our talent (including 34 blue chippers) and making it a priority to play our best players, I don't know who originally suggested ideas as crazy as those, but it could make a difference. I mean, you never know. I don't guess it will hurt us to try. Of course its new and a lot of the older crowd (like me) are skeptical of change and innovation but hey if it works I may be able to get use to it.

I am sort of skeptical that our QBs in this offense are going to be contibutors to the run game. I guess I'm more optimistic about the potential for our rushing than I am for our passing. Obviously, we'll probably fare better if we have some actual balance in our capabilities. I haven't made any estimates yet for that balance but this is our history for pass vs run. I think being able to run the ball in our league most of the time is probably more critical than being able to pass the ball but without question you almost always need some of both.

Just like on offense I think we need a balanced defense but I think run defense is more important than pass defense. At least if you can stop the run you have a chance of the opponent not connecting with their receivers or getting sacks or even occasionally accidentally intercepting their QB. I haven't yet made any estimates here either.

Hyams has been nothing but a down hill trainwreck ever since he attacked Hurds mom and the arrest months after we knew about it here. Just low bs over and over.

My guess is that he has no access and is PO'd about it.

i think having Dobbs was the difference, in 15 and 16 to be honest. i don't see us having a guy like that on this year's offense that can put the unit on its back, and achieve like either of those offenses did. still have the same issues/questions on the O line, and you have ?'s at QB.

jmo.

and our run defense has been abysmal two years running.

anyway, i just think it's a big ask for either of these units to either replicate, or significantly out perform (as would be the case if our run defense got THAT much better this year) previous years' units, in a first year of a new staff that's changing basically everything.

i think this staff is absolutely doing what it can to win as much as possible right now....but likely has a longer game in mind...

hm. the tyler byrd experiment at corner is over. shamburger at nickel.

i'm not going to go so far as to say WTF....but at the same time, i would have bet on shamburger at corner, and i guess i'm just a bit disappointed that we have yet to figure out what Byrd can do on a football field yet.

especially at a position like CB where we need #'s.

i am a little surprised at both of those pieces of info.
