Seems like Rumph has really been on Austin Smith this spring. Hopefully they can get something out of him. Kid definitely has potential, but I wonder if maybe the previous staff was too hands off with him. He showed promise his first semester on campus, but then ate himself into a DL and never seemed to be able to get and stay healthy.
Kind of makes me wonder what exactly was going with him in the S&C program before.
as a part of establishing that standard, players dress the same for practice. There's standard issue gear. Everyone wears the same cleats, as aside from a needed medical brace, no one is wearing different stuff. That standard always means an expectation for the locker room to be kept picked up and clean by the players. Again, part of the standard.
So how has the first five practices gone? One practice visitor said this week that pruitt & co., got more done in an hour that the previous staff did in a week. Now, that's an exaggeration, but it paints the picture of how things are going on the practice field. Another observer said, i dont know if theyll turn this thing around, but they got some really knowledge football coaches. Those guys know their stuff.
tennessees new practice pace is not just about running from one period or one drill to the next. It's about the volume of reps they are getting done during the periods. The two biggest positions where it's different is wide receiver and the defensive line, but even the walk-ons are getting coached by david johnson and jeremy pruitt like theyre scholarship players.
As an example for the defensive linemen, pruitt had new stationary blocking pads installed before spring practice started. The result is instead of 2-3 linemen getting reps while guys wait in line, 5-6 guys are going at one time doubling the reps in that period. Offensively, they have multiple groups going at once during certain drills, too. Many of david johnson's drills for the receivers feature 3-4 guys getting a technique rep at one time instead of 1 or 2. In other words, the difference in the pace is not the speed between drills, it's the volume of reps within the drills.
Another interesting note about the practice changes is how many team periods tennessee is utilizing this spring. One visitor called it old school. the vols are getting much of their individual work done early in practice and then theyre doing lots of 7 on 7, 11 on 11 run, pass and red zone work. Thats definitely a change from the previous staff, and even different than what many other colleges do.
One thing to help with all the changes is the number of people coaching and observing on the practice field. Each position group has a graduate assistant or a quality control guy helping or observing charting stats, etc. When pruitt was hired, phillip fulmer was asked about a commitment level like alabama has. Fulmer said at the time he would research what they do and that pruitt would have the resources he needed. In terms of personnel, pruitt certainly has more staff help than any previous staff at tennessee has had. During routes on air, tennessee could have as many as four qc guys observing/taking notes tino sunseri, montario hardesty, joe osovett and now john lilly.
Im with Aesius. Tennessee has proved they listen to two voices outside of their puppeteers: social media mobs coupled with politicians and empty seats.
If they dont care about winning why should I?
lol
Theo Jackson is also likely a star per Simonton.
We have been thru enough coaching changes around here to Know in everyone of these there is a "new standard" and the new way is heaven while the old way was hell. I recall so much buzz about the new culture when Lane got here. Fulmer didn't know how to run a practice during that time per the buzz
I took from the vq excerpt more about pruiit making a few small tweaks that make a big difference in number of reps. He wants it to be uniform all together one team everyone looks the same. We have better teachers.
I mean you can be negative about it but it's all true stuff. This staff is more experienced on the big stage.
As for Lane/Fulmer reference. Lane had an elite staff with a different way of doing things. It was working. It wasn't any secret Fulmer had allowed it to get lax without cutcliffe around both times

I love the talk of uniformity. Heck I think all teams should be that way. I can't stand hoops teams with different shoes.
But overall I take it all with a grain of salt. We have heard it so many times. Imo it's mostly overblown
Def take with grain of salt but it's encouraging. A lot of signs point to we have the right guy to develop players. We will see come gameday. The biggest thing for me is what do you former players say about you. Butch never really had people screaming to rooftops for him. Pruitt had guys that played for TN rivals saying they will have to pull for TN now because they feel so strongly about him. He has so many guys stepping up to bat for him. Big plus that makes me feel good about what he can do.
My question is all about offense. It will be thendifference in being muschamp or smart
I dont understand how thats not breach of contract. Hes supposed to try and find a comparable job. This isnt it and it doesnt appear hes tried.
