Not specifically LEO related, but a serious WTF moment in the legal system.

Jurors acquit Stillwater bail agent in shooting death of client | News OK

Jurors Friday acquitted a Stillwater bail agent of first-degree murder in the August shooting death of one of her clients.

Chasity Dawn Carey let out a loud gasp as the “not guilty” verdict was announced. She then cried and hugged her attorneys.

Carey testified Williams attempted to grab her gun before fleeing out her office window. She said she beat Williams to the gun and turned to fire just as he was going out the window. She shot Williams in the back.

Prosecutors alleged Carey was not acting in self-defense but shot Williams after he was “no longer a threat.”

A video of the shooting showed Carey grab the gun and fire at Williams after he was out of view of the camera. The video did not show Williams grab for the gun. Defense attorneys contended Williams was just out of view of the camera. The video also did not show a portion of the office where the window was located.

Video of the shooting. Relevant portion starts around 1:50 or so:

Yep. Shoot a man in the back, who is halfway out a window fleeing...a man who never laid a hand on you or anyone else...or even stole anything..not guilty??

This may be another case of swinging for the fences...and coming up empty. Bet if she was charged with 2nd degree or manslaughter and a slew of other gun related charges, she would be headed upstate to do 20 years or more. Pretty girls get away with murder, in this case, literally. What a crock

That is entirely on the dispatcher who made the mistake.

Happened to my mom several years ago. She had her landline cancelled but they must have reassigned the number. Someone called 911 from that number late at night and the dispatchers sent the cops to her house. They did not announce who they were, just started going around the house trying the doors. Mom had her .38 ready to pop somebody. Could have ended up very badly for her or them. She wound up calling 911 and they figured out they’d messed up. Who knows what happened to the person that actually needed the cops.

Did you see the same video I saw? That guy was leaving the scene, not threatening her life and she shot him in the back.

Murder

I watched it. It was definitely murder. But it wasn’t 1st degree murder. That’s bad if the prosecutor went for that.

1st degree murder involves premeditation. There was none in that video. That was murder. It was not premeditated just from what I saw in that video.

She should be in jail regardless.

Exactly. In order to get 1st degree you have to prove premeditation.

.been a few years, but she still looks the same. So do I other than a few wrinkles. We both can still wear the same clothes we wore in HS 20 years ago. I work out 4 or 5 days a week, she just never sits down until 8 or 9 pm everyday.

Definitely outkicked my coverage. Treat her like a queen.

Awesome picture brother.

I can't say with 100% certainty that she didn't go into that interaction with the intentions of finding a reason to kill that man.

As far as what does and doesn't qualify as first degree murder, I don't know. But she went straight for that gun, shot without hesitation, and showed absolutely zero shock or surprise about her actions after the fact.

Unless you can prove she planned, you’re begging for an acquittal by charging her with first degree

True...... based on the video 1st degree would be tough.... but any other type of murder wouldn't be.
That was completely unnecessary

Yep. DA upcharged needlessly and let a killer go free. Wonder if he is still in the running for whatever public office he was trying to show he’s tough on crime for.

That's the thing though. In order to get a first degree conviction the da has to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that was her intention. The burden of proof lies with him.
