The Official 2nd Amendment Appreciation Thread

Grand, are you not much on the Anderson lower/upper receivers?

Sorry, hadn't gotten a chance to respond.

I've used them before and they seemed perfectly fine. I think, if memory serves, one was a little tight fitting, but other than that, it worked.

I don't see how you can go wrong at $39.

You can certainly go wrong when the parts don't fit or it won't mate to an upper. Again, if memory serves, the lower I built had problems mating to the upper. Took all kinds of business to get the rear takedown pin pulled on it. Such things will break in over time, but can be kind of a nuisance until said rifle is broken in.

I've done 6-8 of them. Some Anderson uppers and some others. Never had an issue. Maybe I've just been lucky. Maybe they've improved their machining.

For all of our Knoxville/Sevierville area posters, I just found out that Smoky Mountain Knife Works>>>Bud's Gun Shop.

Buds gun shop is like a title sponsor of UK basketball. I didn’t realize it until they were launching Bud’s Gun shop tee shirts into the crowd during a time out. Thought that was one of the most Kentucky thinks ever.

GV, package arrived. Thanks. When you get time, can you post that picture again so I get the mount right? I'd like to try both it and the IMC mount in daylight and dark conditions, which I will be able to do this coming weekend.

Again, thanks.

It fits in the A frame front sight base. the L shaped piece is an additional one that follows the barrel and is optional. I never used it on mine, but it's there.

Take the screws out. It only fits one way inside the FSB. Screw back together hand tight. Done.

Gotcha.

Me either. The author has cred no doubt. But I cannot accept his conclusion.

Tim's a solid guy. Former Border Patrol, and yes...he's been shot at. More than once. Some times "towards", and a couple of times "at". He has also seen good agents...friends...freeze up under fire. It's never good, and it's inexcusable here, but Tim has walked the walk, so he gets my respect if he chooses to voice his opinion.

On another note, I do not buy for one second the BCSO deputies attorney saying "he thought the shots were coming from outside." Pure BS. As confusing as the acoustics can be, especially around buildings and other reflectors, there is absolutely no mistaking the sound of an AR being fired outside, where you are, or inside, where you are not. I would also think that the fleeing students would have been a bit of a clue. Rare for kids to run towards where the shots are coming from. And finally, that excuse arrived a week too late. In other words, it's an excuse...not what really happened.

EDIT: And when you can't be sure, one rule applies: Run towards the gunfire. That's where people are likely dying. He never moved, but he heard the shots. All I need to know. Screw your "policy manual". You're a Guardian; go find the bad guy.

I don't completely agree with Tim, but I completely get where he's coming from.

Ok, GV...figured out the FSB mount. It's not compatible with the IMC mount, as they both put the light in about the same place, so the two mounts get in the way of each other. If it's okay with you, I'm going to hang on to the FSB mount for a week or two. I'd like to shoot one (day and dark); change mounts; and then repeat. I do like how the FSB mount locks up against the "frame" of the gun, as opposed to the IMC mount, which is bolted to the hand guards. So if you're okay with it, let me put them both through the paces. My a** might depend on the one that wins the job.

Grand,

I've posted earlier, if you you didn't notice, I have ordered an upper and lower to construct an AR-10. I've found since that there are more variants in the the AR-10s than the AR-15s. They vary quite a bit it seems across different manufacturers. I've ordered the AR-10, M5 GEN II from Aero Precision.

Aero Precision M5 Gen 2 Stripped AR10 Receiver Set – Ground Zero Precision

Like I said, there seems to be different versions of these, even between the Aero Precision receivers. They talk about it accepting DPMS components. Also, it talks about DPMS high profile tang. I assume this is going to affect the rail I choose. Any pointers you can give me as I start putting this thing together? I was just going with the Aero lower parts kit so it should be fine. I'll probably upgrade the trigger later. Thanks as always.

What the hell?! Where is the barrel recess for the M203 grenade launcher mount. What a wuss AR

I’ve got a similar light mount on my Colt. Easy on/off with a quick action of my thumb.

Yeah, same here. My only question is how it will hold up under recoil, or if I bump it. The mount GV sent me attaches to the front sight base; puts the light in about the same place; and it's mounted to the "frame" of the gun, as opposed to the hand guard. I have a feeling I'm going to owe GV some money, but I at least want to try them both out in day and night conditions.

Grenade launcher. Hmmmm. Now you've gotta think that GV might have a couple of those lying around in his basement. Maybe if I ask nicely...

Here's a good explanation of the high tang difference:

DPMS LR 308 Products

And here:

The Difference in 308 Upper Receivers and What We Must Know

It does say it uses DPMS components. Which a lot of rifles will. Mainly the parts that aren't as "critical" so to speak as the rest of the rifle. Bolt catch, mag release, etc. The good news is most AR-15 triggers will work fine with your lower. So, when you buy that Geissele SSA-E, it'll drop right in. Same with pistol grips. The screws will work between an AR-10 and AR-15. However, some manufacturers use a slightly larger tang on their grip for an AR-10.

I'd assume you are going for a carbine setup? If so, I'd recommend the Armalite AR-10 carbine extension.

AR-10(R) 6 Position Receiver Extension Kit (No Stock) - AR10REKIT01 - Armalite | Armalite

Little longer than a standard AR so you won't get a full "collapse" on your stock. Not that big a deal though. Thread pitch on your Aero should be 1/11, though I didn't see that mentioned. I'd check first before buying that extension. But basically, the Armalite extension is more or less the same length as the Vltor A5 system with an H3 buffer. Works like a champ. It actually uses a rifle spring in a carbine tube.

Really good thing is all your mags can be Magpul.

Hope this answered your question.

GV didn't ask for money, hence GV sometimes does things out of the kindness of his tiny, black heart.
