The stronger correlation would be with right wing radio, but still weak.

There is a correlation between proposed and enacted gun bans and the availability of these so called "assault rifles."

However, are we to ignore the previous 30 years when they were highly available and not try to look deeper into the cause rather than just say "it's because of an AR-15"?

Again, I will ask what is the difference between other first world countries that don't have several school shootings per month and the USA? The big difference seems to be the access to guns and gun ownership per capita.
