I wonder what people would say if Pruitt said we fans should be ashamed for not appreciating Butch. I could argue Butch and Zo did similar things.

We should be. I wonder what Pruitt would think if he inherited the roster that Butch Jones did.

Barnes isn't going to pander to the fans or the media. He doesn't give two ****s that there are critics hanging on everything that he utters.

It was a message that could resonate with recruits though. For whatever reason Cuonzo's been signing more than his fair share so defending CCM while at UT might actually put Barnes in a more favorable light with potential signees.

Pearl wouldn’t have said the fans should be ashamed. Not many coaches would do something like that. It’s a dumb comment to make.

So, you are going to explicitly assume that Pearl can control his tongue when asked a direct question? That he wouldn't make dumb statements?

I know an NCAA investigator or two who may disagree.

Because he was most likely directly asked about it. What else would he say? "I can't comment on that because I don't know how he was embraced?" That's not a positive answer.

Barnes is going to avoid any and all conflict when answering questions about another coach, especially one that he likes personally. Not to get all religious, but Barnes is a faithful Christian, and he is going to respect others, especially if he personally knows the man.

Again his comments about Martin were fine. Every coach in the country thinks every other coach in the country is great. It’s a fraternity. I get it.

The other stuff was uncalled for and could have easily been avoided.

Rick what do you think about Coach Martin and the job he did here? Do you think he was fully embraced here?

Answer: I don’t know anything about his time here and whether or not he was embraced. I know we have some of the best fans in the country and I’m proud to be the coach. Let me just say I think Cuonzo Martin is a fantastic coach and an even better man. I really have a lot of respect for him and his career.

Yeah. He always knew what to say. He was slick.

You are wanting to make this about Pearl. Not me.

I just think an older established coach can say things a young coach can't

I'd agree. The correct PR answer was probably, "I'm focused on our team now, in 2018. I'm not really interested in discussing a former coach, who we will face Wednesday, nor do I care to speculate on how his time here was received by our great fans. Coach Martin is a great guy, coach, and is doing a nice job at Missouri."

No recruit in the country gives a crap what Rick Barnes says about Cuonzo Martin.

Only difference is Zo got out of town before the bad year and it was coming no doubt

Very feasible, but Martin was steadily climbing uphill (granted only through 3 seasons) and I would argue that the S16 run was much more prestigious than anything Butch did. Starting to think that the situations are too unique to call them "similar."

Don't get me wrong, you bring up an interesting point, and they both did have a strange unsettling feel.

Butch: "**** all them".

Majors: "Gay Street QBs"

Drunkle Jerry: something about Kmart

Cuonzo: something about threats to his wife

And looking back exactly how smart was it to make those comments?

Could argue that Jerry Green’s comments got him fired. Fans didn’t want him back. The Butch Jones era went south around the time he said that. (Wasn’t into a mic though)

To the bolded part, total bull**** considering where his slick tongue eventually landed him.

For the second part, I'm just using him as a reference to illustrate the kind of latitude you typically allow for a coach you like vs the crusade effort to nitpick everything Barnes does or says.

Simply put, if Pearl had said the same thing about Peterson, you'd have no problem with it, or certainly wouldn't go out of your way to draw attention to it the way you have this morning.

Again, it’s not about him complimenting Zo. It’s his comments about not being embraced and being ashamed.

Pearl wouldn’t have said that. He just wouldn’t have. He knew how to work people and wouldn’t have said something like that to drive a wedge. He would have told everyone how great they were. Cuonzo, the fans, Missouri, etc.

When did you ask all of them?

Showing respect for Cuonzo certainly can be heard by recruits. Especially any that are considering TN... because I guarantee that they're being educated about the ****ty BBB fans by the competing schools.

He’s not established here. Not entitled to anything. Just like the comments about recruiting by his assistant coach.

He's established. His plan is working and he is comfortable enough in his own skin to speak his mind. I think that is a good place to be for a coach.

But you approach it as if Barnes said those things explicitly, and he simply didn't. He used qualifying words like "if" and "then", and that's the very exact argument you'd make if you were trying to defend him. But you're not, and it's obvious as to why. You're just trying really hard to vilify him over some pretty innocuous statements.

It was implied. No need to make those comments. At all.
