Choose to Be Positive

Here's some positive. Let's keep bringing a knife to a gunfight. If we pick the right knife this time, maybe we'll get lucky.

There is a lot riding on this hire. The fan base is suffering from cardiac arrest and Pruitt is the crash cart. Hope it works.

I'm on board with Pruitt. Just talked to my sons HS football coach. He said," Great hire if it's Pruitt." The man works nonstop.

I think that’s what everyone did with Dooley and Botch.

So Dooley and Butch were elite coordinators and recruiters at SEC schools? Or were they the “best fit” head coaches at smaller schools?

Pruitt is about on the same risk level as Kirby or Muschamp. Obviously Muschamp didn’t work out at Florida but he’s doing great at Florida. Kirby is killing it at Georgia. Pruitt has gotten it done at FSU, Georgia, and Bama as DC and it’s not a stretch to think that he could do great things at UT.

And he’s definitely not a “Google coach” unless you have had your head in the sand. None of our recruits will have to be told who he is, because many of them have met him.

I wonder if many of the folks ok with where our program has fallen remember the years from 1990 to 2004?

Agreed, OP. A fair amount of my posts lately have been to push back against all the conspiratorial, over the top, rumor mongering. It still breaks down to a person's nature in many ways: Pessimist, Realist, Optimist. I personally prefer to live out my life in the Realist to Optimist range. For this hire, I trust in Phil and he has my support for a while. And, I will not believe the sky is falling at the very first issue. Here's to a better next 10 years than the previous 10.

If Pruitt is the guy we hire, then my outlook will be fairly positive. His defensive experience, recruiting ability, and knowledge of the SEC are enough to give me hope that he can win here. Honesty I'm just ready to hire some one and get it over with.

This coaching search was completely screwed up from the beginning. Our chances of getting a top name was almost zero after the foolish decision to hire Schiano. Look up the definition of administrative incompetence and the result will be the last decade of University of Tennessee Athletics.

Defense is the reason the vols didn’t score a offensive TD for 15 quarters?

It all makes sense now.....

Look, I'm not going to get all giddy about this hire. At the same time I'm not going to be critical. We got the coach that we got. I'm going to give him a chance before I criticize.

A Pruitt hire is liken to your sister bringing home a boyfriend that you really don't like. He's loud and obnoxious, doesn't know what asparagus is, and is from Alabama. But given time, you may find that he's sorta fun to hang out with, and cares about the rest of your family members. After a while you come to accept him.

That's me being positive.

I'm positive that if Pruitt is our hire, many will pound their chests claiming this is who we wanted all along. Some will walk away for good. Some will walk away until the next coaching search. Some will wait and see. Gut feeling...not the right time in our program to give another up and comer a shot.

It's going to be all about the assistants. They will be the difference one way or another

Absolutely 100% true. This is WHY I am not overly excited about any of our first timer candidates. Not that they aren't good options, but they don't have the years of relationships in the business, or think going to be difficult to recruit assistant coaches who have observed our dysfunction from afar. Guys who have been in the business awhile have more leverage here. Les, for example, wouldn't have an issue filling out a staff...except for maybe QB coach.

I'll be positive externally, but not internally. When I say externally, I mean I will pretend to be hyped about Pruitt to other fan bases. I'll say he was our number 1 all along and call him a home run... But on the inside, I will not be excited and have very low expectations.

Anyone can win me over if they win on the field... But with Pruitt or another coordinator, I will have to see it happen first.
