Official Jon Gruden Thread XLVI

Started thinking more about affecting behavior/diminishing harmful influence and came around to this.

Pilot/Flying J recently sold of a sizeable percentage of the business to Berkshire Hathaway. They are scheduled to sell most of the rest of the business in 2023, with Haslam family only controlling a 20% stake at that point.

Recent actions have led to a widespread boycott in Vol country. That hurts a little. If, as the rock says, we're the Tennessee Browns at this point, why couldn't they become the Cleveland Vols? I wasn't able to pull up a map on my phone, but it looks like there are 39 locations in the state of Ohio (in addition to 31 in Tennessee). That's 10.3% of their 775 locations in those two states alone. Hmm... could hurt a little more.

At a certain point, current minority shareholder Berkshire Hathaway might get a little miffed if their bottom line is being affected by sophomoric meddling and power plays. I would even imagine, as careful as Warren Buffett is, that there might be certain pain points built into their acquisition contract regarding personal actions by the chairman and the CEO that decrease the value of the enterprise.

Thoughts?

People are looking for direction in the great times of revolution. We are at a crossroads, and all directions are not equal. In order to get where we want to go we must choose wisely. Not merely one choice, but many, consecutive, correct choices.

The public cannot make the hire, but I do believe we can limit the scope of the search. It appears to me that we have three names we can accept: Fulmer, Blackburn, and Davis.

It is clear from what is available that one of the factions doesn't want Fulmer to become the AD. I believe the reasons for this are clear. They are trying to control the narrative. Here is where we have the most power.

For our next move, I suggest the following:

  • Step One: Gather Our Ammunition
  • Step Two: Take Aim
  • Step Three: FIRE! FIRE! FIRE!

Step One: Gather Our Ammunition

This is where we must win. Here is where the breaks are made.

In order to control the narrative, we need more than comments on Twitter. Like it or not, this fails at garnering wide credibility. What we need is for some local reporters to generate some articles make Fulmer look good in light of the recent reports of sabotage. We need it to be spun so that Fulmer was de facto acting in a leadership position by preventing Currie (a lame duck) from making any detrimental hire. So, if anyone knows (or is) a reporter with any credibility, give us some short pieces that we can link. It can be fluff pieces, blurbs, opinions, etc.

For Blackburn and Davis, we need articles showing their competence and leadership abilities. We need to promote their virtues and skills. Find, create, etc. anything available on a public forum (other than a message board).

Step Two: Take Aim

Find your greatest points of influence, and prepare to attack. We need to focus on two points: the public sphere and the administration.

The public sphere includes twitter, Facebook, TOS's, etc. Be ready to find places where our enemies reside. Find places where our message is most visible.

The administration is clearly receptive to our purpose. Continue the emails. State clearly and succinctly that we, the fans, support (1) Fulmer (2) Blackburn and (3) Davis. Short of those hires, they MUST have good justification to make any AD hire. Send emails, make phone calls, etc. Now is the time to push. We must apply more steam.

We must clearly state that Reid Sigmon is not an acceptable choice.

Step Three: FIRE! FIRE! FIRE!

We must win the war of information. This means talking to people and pushing our argument and agenda. Argue in any space available when the anti-Fulmer agenda is brought.

Share our "ammunition" everywhere. Change the storyline. It means convincing everyone that Fulmer was acting as a leader by preventing the hire. We can admit that Fulmer worked against Currie and make the story about how he helped the University. Make him a hero for preventing Currie hiring anyone.

We cannot let the Fulmer sabotage story gain positive traction. We must those stories appear to be muck slinging from an embittered (and fired) John Currie and Haslam.

Promote the virtues of Davis and Blackburn. We must get everyone on board. By making them all popular we increase the name recognition and value of each of those hires.

Conclusion:

We have the power to influence this race. We can control the story line. It just takes a tiny bit of coordination. Roll the snowball down the hill and watch the monster it quickly becomes.

Quoted this because it needs to be viewed as many times as possible. Great job.

Okay, laying all my cards out on the table specifically concerning PV.

I believe he is Atlanta Vol. Same guy, different name. And I believe he is a legitimately good, kind and generous person. I also believe he has access to the UT administration in a way that only big-$$ boosters get. I don't doubt him one bit on a personal level.

But I absolutely question his professional goals in all this. Don't know where he wants to take this fight with Haslam, or why.

And I'm not into fighting battles whose purpose can't be explained. Or won't be.

So, PV/AV/anyone else on this team can explain it, if they will. Or I'm not on board.

I'm going back to the basics: get a good AD, then get the best coach we can. All the back-room deals and efforts can fend for themselves.

I'm not angry, just curious and skeptical. If my words give off any emotion other than those, forgive my ability to be more clear.

Go Vols!

Not the same person.

AV is on the inside.

If Manning takes over AD that's equivalent to darth Vader stabbing Haun solo with a lightsaber if he does that to fulmer

I know we talked about this yesterday suave I still hold firm that he is on the good side.

Here's my opinion: he was the catalyst that allowed haslam to move forward on schiano.

He purposely gave his "ok" and blessing as the ruse that allowed the HOH to hang itself, it was the rope around haslam's neck.

Think about the published reports about his dislike for schiano, the articles and articles stating such.

He got 2 birds with one "ok".

I believe Manning knew full well he would take black eye after black eye and ridicule and hate, and he was ok falling on that sword to achieve what we are hopefully about to see.

This was a post of mine from yesterday;

Haslam: napoleanesque egomaniac, predictable, is known quantity and reinforced by happenings of 2012

Currie: wildcard, stooge, all schiano, no other list

Our beloved, “give blessing, ok’s schiano” willing to take the black eye publicly, he is the game changer

So, we have a known predictable Haslam, and the wildcad stooge Currie, on the word of our beloved and go after schiano…game theory and probability suggest that the likelihood of haslam trying to do as he wishes is real good, just unreal to believe he is so brazen and egotistical that he believes he can do what he wanted and he was too predictable as he tried to do the exact same thing, here’s some rope.

The ok or blessing just feeds into his brain that he can do this, and is reinforced in his head by the blessing. More rope.

Why would someone who by all accounts loves this university, doesn't need the Haslams to get anything for a NFL job, who by accounts disliked schiano, and by all accounts true to his character would be willing to take the black eyes and criticisms of being a traitor....because he was raised as was his dad from the words of Archie's father in the 30 for 30, "just want to be a good guy"....do you side on the thought of what we know of our beloved or not?

If so, our boy was willing to take the heat for the greater good, because all indications are and have been he is a UT man through and through, and by him doing what he did I believe he is and it was for the greater good, gave haslam the final push to have the rope to hang himself.

much more to the character of Manning than what we have seen being said.....

Hey, I'm open to the idea as more than possible and plausible. I put no man on a pedestal and know man is fallible.

Any chance of having an Orange and White game in December....we might get a few 1000 to attend if the end result is what this thread has been all about :)

Ok so John Brice tweeted Fulmer taking the reigns has been in the works for 48 hours. When did Deerhunter show up? Just saying...

Lulz. I'd like to be hopeful.

Hmm... PV has hinted at this how many times? Seems like it’s been about 24hrs..
