Official Jon Gruden Thread XLV

Whatever you think Beaver is, dude gets more likes and retweets than anyone else spreading the fire Currie message. He is fighting with us, like and retweet his stuff with appropriate hashtags.

We can debate after the fight who and why he is here.

Hate to pick at scabs, but I'm watching Nat'l Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, and expecting Gruden and being given Schiano is a lot like Clark W. Griswold expecting his Christmas bonus and getting enrolled in the jelly of the month club.

And Clark's outburst (holy $h!t where's the Tylenol) was our protest.

And Currie trying to save the day is Cousin Eddie kidnapping Clark's boss.

This morning, Trey Wallace reported (via a twitter reply) that UT did offer Gruden, but it was a "private offer." Click the twitter exchange at bottom of post to see the entire screenshot dialogue with Trey. One reason how/why CBS this Sunday reported what so many others on here did as well, of the $10m/year type offer and significant interest at the top of our candidate list...just before all hell broke loose.

It's clear there was a faction who wanted Gruden and he was listening, building a staff, looking at staff contracts per guys like @Vol_in_CLT. At the same time, it seems clear that Currie (and by extension Haslam) did nothing with any of that group's work, didn't follow up on it, and clearly didn't make a public offer for Gruden. They were too focused on Schiano and false flight plans and their own agenda. If you make a $8-10m/year offer for Gruden official (which you clearly can after offering Gundy $7m) and make it public letting the world know it, you force an official answer from JG, which becomes public whether he accepts or declines -- and ends all Grumors going forward (whether yes or no). It's all out there for everyone to know if that happens. Instead, seems they didn't even pursue him, explaining all the bad intel/info folks were hearing about the Gruden deal - the only info that mattered was what Currie/Haslam had in mind.

So it got me thinking why? We keep hearing about the "control" word. JG reportedly wanted more control. Haslam apparently wants all of the control (and was worried JG would not stay long-term some have said). Keeping it simple, if the issue was control...should the focus should turn to Ergen? We've seen the reports where guys have said he's not publicly a top donor, even though his wealth clearly outweighs Haslam's. That's understandable. He doesn't live in Tennessee nor does he need the control/influence over the state of TN like the Haslam's on a consistent basis. But there has been plenty of smoke about Ergen's influence ($$$) having grown this time around in this search and about potential funding to science/academic programs should we hire JG, a focus to better the university's academic and athletic standings. Was that fan fiction or real?

What IF it is this simple? a theory...Ergen and a private group wanted Gruden. With that would come a MAJOR monetary gift from a guy worth $18b. Gruden would get the control he wants. And Ergen would become the WHALE donor. Who does that hurt the most? Doesn't hurt any of us fans or the university. Only hurts one man. Haslam. Who loses control -- is no longer the white whale, but is replaced by two other white whales. No other boosters have been able to challenge or control Haslam. That would change. Again, no proof of this billionaire battle but have seen others allude to it so wanted to speculate and see if anyone had any insights.

If that was the case, he clearly might do something to sabotage or go rogue on the JG efforts as many have speculated was the case based on what they heard. And focus on a man he wanted to hire in 2014 (Schiano) for the Browns per reports. And Currie, who he personally hired some have said (according to an in-the-know poster on TOS, Currie wasn't part of AD search; per that poster, he walked him into BOT meeting and said here's your new AD, leading Charlie Anderson to say No and walk out), is just an extension of Haslam executing his orders.

Perhaps that explains the nuttiness of the past week. And why things remain so crazy. And why Hyams may have gotten fed bad info or false leaks by people trying to rise up against Haslam/Currie and embarrass Currie regarding Brohm.

I've resigned myself to nothing changing. Currie may be re-assigned to other projects and Fulmer and others may be leading the search charge, but it's going to take a real booster/board uprising and a lot of $$$ to curtail Haslam's influence/control a bit and to bring in a guy like Blackburn instead of Currie who could actually go hire a tier 1 coach.

I have nothing against Brohm if it happens. He's a great offensive mind and the games would be more entertaining. But it's not an A hire. It beats Schiano by a lot, but we're not winning titles with Brohm.

And yes, I was convinced we were getting JG -- not by sources or inside info, but by reading the intell from folks on here and rationalizing everything. It was a mistake to underestimate Haslam. There seems to be no way he would want Ergen and JG to overtake his power.

from TOS

So what you are saying is we are screwed?

Did anyone see Clay Travis's video this afternoon?

He read an email exchange from one of the big TN boosters and John Currie.

Short of it is John wanted to meet him and the booster basically told him in a very direct way to go f$&k himself lol

It's on Clay's twitter, it needs to be watched, he is just ripping everyone up her from Currie to Davenport to Haslam.

Someone I guess told he he was gonna end up making powerful friends talking about the Haslams like that and Clay said he wasn't scared of the Haslama lol

Clay is the guy we need to rally around and get our message out there to go along with what we're already doing

ELROND
The fanbase's strength returns.

GANDALF
The wounds of the last two coaches will never fully heal. VFL will carry it the rest of its life.

ELROND
And yet to have survived some many horrible SEC seasons and clown-car coaching, VFL has shown extraordinary resilience to head coaching incompetence.

GANDALF
It is a burden VFL should never have to
had to bear. We can ask no more of the fanbase.

~

ELROND

The time of Butch is over. The recruits are leaving Rocky Top..... who will you look to now that Butch is gone? Haslam? He hides in his Pilot stores seeking riches. He cares nothing for the troubles of the fanbase.

GANDALF
It is in the UTAD that we must place our hope.

ELROND
Currie? Currie is weak. The spirit of the UTAD is
failing. The power of UT football is all but
spent, its pride and dignity forgotten.
It is because of Currie the GoogleCoach conversation survives.

ELROND (V.O.) (CONT'D)

I was there, Gandalf...I was there five years ago when Butch took the job. I was there the day the strength of the UTAD failed.

ELROND

Hart...hurry...follow me!

ELROND (V.O.) (CONT'D)

I let Hart into the heart of contract negotiations, where genuine SEC-caliber coaches are: the one place Tennessee could sign one.

ELROND

Take the pen...sign him!!!!

CLOSE ON: HART...CAPTIVATED BY THE MAC COACH.

HART
No.

Hart turns and walks away.

ELROND
Hart!!!!

INT. ELROND'S CHAMBER, RIVERDELL -- DAY

Elrond turns to Gandalf.

ELROND

A real SEC coach should have been hired that that day, but GoogleMACCoaching was allowed to endure. Hart had his GoogleCoach.....and the UT football spirit was broken.

There's no strength left in the world of
the UTAD and VFL. They're scattered, divided, leaderless.

GANDALF
There is one who could unite them, one who could reclaim the throne of the SEC and all college football.

ELROND
He turned from that path a long time ago.
He has chosen ....Monday Night Football.

If anyone is good at making gifs. We need some of Currie and Haslam to spread on social media. Post them here and hopefully Beaver and other Twitter folks will post them.

Many of the "Insiders" have seemingly deserted us and left us to fight this fight without ANY word of Encouragement ..... I would like to personally thank RockytopSC for his continued efforts to keep us informed and give us some instructions about what we can and should do....

GRUDEN TO THE HILL!

Haslams power is deeply entrenched.

Losing the AD puppet (firing Currie) and hiring someone that has the will to tell Haslam to eff off (Blackburn) would go a long way in leveraging his grip off the throat if the university.

The next step would be Ergen and Anderson stepping in and shoving Haslam out of the way with donations and promises of support.

Even if Currie is fired they STILL have to be careful that Haslam doesn't ramrod another AD "yes man" in before they can get who they need to fix this mess.

What about Thunder? Which side do you think he falls on? Haslam or Ergen?

As a person, I hate every position that Clay has.

But we only agree about UT football. If it’s not Gruden, don’t expect to compete for championships here.

Actually, he never said that. A bunch of other posters said that. He always maintained that his group was working towards that end, but not that it was completed.

Unless you are intentionally dense (see, troglodyte), you would know that there was (allegedly) a group who worked towards this end. This much is clear from the numerous disconnected sources indicating as much.

The scenario that makes sense is that the boosters got together and worked to arrange a set of terms that JG would agree to, that JG did indicate potential agreement to those terms, and then Currie went another direction - completely bamboozling everyone.

Take your ignorance elsewhere. It stinks. My delicate sensibilities are growing ill from your stench.

So, Currie basically did the same thing Bammer did in 2012? Few differences but similar.

Actually...

I think Ergen is coming in on Thunder's side. I have this feeling he's been the driving force in removing the HoH influence and is getting the ducks in a row.

If the theory regarding the boosters orchestrating a private offer and Gruden giving assent to that offer is true - then he didn't lie. They just didn't expect the GS shenanigans.

Not a total Beaver fanboy, but I think there's enough independent confirmation of that story to give it legs.

Independent confirmation from Volnation and Trey Wallace. That's it. I was 100% bought in. At this point, I'm not anymore. I'm sorry, but I will never believe any info from any internet insider ever again.

He actually has. He led us to believe Gruden was done. Talking about black tie event and tail gate. I've been here since XX and I've read every single thing he's said. He may have had an agenda from the start, but that doesn't negate the fact that he led us to believe Gruden was coming.

I’ve said this many times before over the past week and it’s just my take. Looking back, and based on the developments of the past 4 days, I’m sure Beav would’ve said what he said differently. He was cocky, arrogant and overconfident. He was building an image and persona that is the opposite of what we’re seeing now from him. He admitted his group overestimated Haslam. But what I believe he would’ve said (which has been shared by many people on here) is that it was “done” from Grudens side and the booster side. So to him, it WAS done. The caveat was Haslam and Currie.
