Atlanta_Vol said that if Gruden turned down the offer we made that we had a back up plan that would be a great hire. So here is my theory based on what Atlanta_Vol has said, and what information has come out

Big boosters did all the heavy lifting for Gruden. They contacted him. They found out what it would take to get him. And they thought that they had Currie and Haslam on their side. Currie and Haslam had a separate agenda. Perhaps they didn’t like the control they would have to give away to Gruden. Or the 18 million for Gruden and his staff was just too much. They started going after Mullen, Schiano, and Campbell. Mullen got the call from UF and backed out. Campbell’s buyout was too big. Currie panicked and started finalizing the deal with Schiano. The news of the hire was leaked to Volnation and boosters. Everyone rebeled and the deal was stopped. All boosters but the Haslams were extremely pissed that they went behind their backs and not only killed the deal with Gruden, but tried to hire Greg “I didn’t see nothin’” Schiano. The boosters went down to Knoxville and demanded Currie be fired for this. Instead of being fired Currie came to the compromise that he would go with the Boosters back up plan. Mike Gundy.

So we get plan B and Haslam wins the war.

No way Gundy was a backup plan to Gruden.

Imho

I don’t know Atlanta_Vols position in all this but I do know this is the vibe I also got from PV when my family was in his box. He refused to talk anything Gruden but he did kind of volunteer this information.

HearforGrumors and Bubba.....you’re both here right now. Can you give any insight on what happened with Gruden?

I don't know anything. I've maintained throughout the process that I'm just an observer. I like solving puzzles, and I like the Vols so this was perfect for me.

My guess is what has been surmised so far. There were two coalitions, one went behind the others back and tried to be sneaky. Their hand got caught in the cookie jar, big time. The other is now bringing the wrath upon their heads.

While he may not be the South's favorite military commander, I think this sums up the position of the boosters, etc.

"War is the remedy that our enemies have chosen, and I say let us give them all they want."

I guess I'm thread-weary. Who is PV on here?

But there’s really only 1 coach out there who doesn’t and unfortunately he coaches the red team. Urban, Petersen, Patterson, Shaw, Stoops all did that... I hear that argument a lot but every coach does it every year. Minus 1.

I believe even Saban is 0-7 now against Auburn teams that win 9+ games. Everyone has a weakness.

Wonder what Peyton's reservation with Tee is?

I am just going to say what I feel about Tee. He has proven nothing yet as an OC.

He is a great recruiter, but don't forget he trolled us a few years ago and turned down our job offer. Tee is out for Tee (as he should be) but I do not believe he is ready to be ahead coach yet and with this hire, we cannot gamble.

If we get an Offensive minded Head Coach he would be fine as an OC as long as we knew who was really calling the plays.

Maybe someday Tee will be a great coach, but he has not proven it yet.

No worries.

I presume no one involved in the attempted hire did any kind of KH analysis. Or at least didn't care about the results of such an analysis.

This deal was burned to a crisp. The chef should probably hang up the tongs and find a new vocation.

Immediately! Gundy is a solid hire..costing more than it should have originally, and at the expense of not having a long term plan and Gruden

Fulmer was the king of losing winnable games and losing losable games. And he won a national title. (Can we ban the term “natty” It sounds so stupid to me)

Gundy is an acceptable hire, but, if the thing that supposedly made Gruden back out 5 days later was handled would he come?

I believe that the "issue" is still going to win, as appears by the reaction to accept Gundy.
