Official Jon Gruden Thread XLIII

Here's my thing. If, by some reason if, Gruden fell through and we struck out on Petersen, we have to have a hire this year. The last two games have shown us we cannot go with an interim staff into next season while looking for a new coach.

I'll tell you why I'm reasonably high on Norvell being a decent hire. Not a home run hire, but a standing double as a minimum. Before Debord was hired some years ago, I was looking at talent at OC around the country. Two names kept popping up as the "up and comers" in the coordinator role, Mike Norvell (when he was at Arizona State) and Lincoln Riley (when he was at ECU). Both showed great promise and sharp offensive minds. Before Debord was hired, I had hoped to see Riley or Norvell come into UT to provide the spark of nastiness in our offense. That didn't happen and I feel we missed the train on that one. But now?

Riley is now looking to possibly make the Playoffs in his first year as a HC. Norvell is looking to make serious money at a P5 school when, not if, they offer him. We aren't getting Riley by any means. Norvell is still a possibility if all other plans fall through.

You know me, Boro, I'm full on Grude. If Gruden misses the train, offer the moon, stars and anything else Petersen wants. After that? Go with the safe hire.

A safe hire is gonna bring the mob out

I'm not sure I'm following the field repairs nugget. They wouldn't announce at Neyland, would they? Never have. Also, wouldn't they be working to get the field ready to be put to bed for the winter? Painting the field is definitely odd though.

They keep the field looking nice for recruits.

"I have been told my multiple sources that as of now, no hire has been made.

Could something happen later today? Maybe as a source said he wouldn't rule it out.

But there's nothing done this morning with any coach."

If no hire has been made where is the nearest bridge

"There is no Mullen. No Schiano. No interviews today/tomorrow. Not sure where Brent is getting that info, but the Grudenaline is about to start flowing"

Everyone calm down

Assuming Malzahn stays put, Arky will come after Norvell hard with a real offer that gives him guaranteed time to rebuild and they can pay $4 million or more. Basically, I don't think Norvell is going to have to accept some sort of heavily-stringed deal just to get an SEC gig at a school where he can win. Too me, that puts him in the same camp as Campell. Plus, I don't think anything good has come out of Memphis since Elvis but I admit that is just personal bias.

Sometimes you have to look outside the coaching realm for the nuggets. The Memphis AD has a record so far of pulling in good coaches and/or keeping them. Fuente, Tubby Smith, Mike Norvell and kept Pastner around until wooed away by another program.

Sometimes an AD sucks really bad (may Mike Hamilton get trampled by a horde of rabid squirrels) and makes piss poor hires. Other times, they have an eye for talent that pushes them upward.

OK people I am all GRUDEN but where are the insiders now and if I missed it what are they saying. The people we have been listening to the most and got us ALL fired up have not been anywhere around so what gives.

Not overnight after working a 13 hour shift the day before.

If we don’t hear anything from anyone today, prepare the gates. Bar the doors and latch the windows. The trolls will begin to invade again, and to be honest, I’m over the whole smoke and mirrors, soon, be patient crap. It’s time for Currie to make his announcement.
