That and I don't think JG would embarrass the University like that. Not sure how he would convey to the UT fanbase that he wouldn't take it, but I highly, highly doubt he would do it like that.
I would not at ALL be surprised to hear something in the next 48 hours putting the Gruden talk to rest and tempering the expectations of the fan base that are convinced he is coming and setting the stage for the actual hire. Some will love it, some will hate it but that is true with any hire. I know of at least one recruits dad who has been told, directly from "Dr. Currie" as he said, a hire will be announced on or before December 10th (probably before) and to not listen to the Gruden talk in the media and that we will be getting a top notch coach that knows how to win in the SEC. (Didn't say the name but sounds a LOT like Dan Mullen)
The AD knows what is going on and hears all the call ins and the fact you cannot hear the word Tennessee mentioned in a broadcast without the mention of Gruden. It has reached a level of belief that has taken on a life of its own. The LAST thing they want is for recruits to be expecting a hire that looks like it is not going to come to fruition.
At this point they know they have to address it as an official hire draws near imo. They cannot announce Mullen (Most likely imo), Patterson (possible but not super likely) or Norvell (vomit, not likely I HOPE) without first tempering fan expectations.
sounds like this train is about to derail HARD....no positive news it several days. Sexton's name heated up a lot. Why did we ever ever get our hopes up that we would make a good hire.......
BC just said JG will parachute into the stadium during halftime of the Vanderbilt game wearing nothing but an orange tie, whilst guzzling a bottle of gentleman jack and playing the solo to stairway to heaven one handed on a makeshift guitar made of the old blue and orange beer barrell from the UK series!
If not Gruden, Patterson, or any of the other names that we are hearing (Mullen, Norvell, Campbell, etc.) Frost will be my number 1.
Let me first say I still believe Jon Gruden will be the next coach. There's reason to doubt that, and I've never claimed it as a 100% fact, but I trust where I've heard this.
Secondly, let me say that if it was not Gruden, I think Mullen is a solid hire. Not going to go through all the reasons why, but he can develop talent and if he surrounded himself with great recruiters, could be a great fit.
But lastly, I think there is VERY little chance Mullen leaves MSU for ANY job. He's comfortable there. The expectations are low. He's 1 year away from being their all-time winningest coach. 7-8 wins a year and they'll build a statue of him. He could stay there another 10 years at $5M or so. Would he really trade that to go somewhere he could make a little more, but also may only survive 3-5 years? Doubt it. He loves Starkville. His family loves Starkville. He's staying put.
I'm sorry....Butch had a vastly more qualifying resume than Scott Frost. He's done nothing worthy of a Blue Blood SEC program. I'm certain he's a fine individual and may be a homerun someday, but now is not the time for a hire with 2 years HC experience at a non-P5 program.
