All I know is if nothing comes out before MNF, the ratings are going to spike tonight...at least for the first 30 minutes.

Like it’s whatever age I’m fine if he doesn’t want to coach. But if he does, you offer him more than what other job is offering. I know his comfort zone is the NFL but would he take less money to coach there and not here?

I think there is more truth in this post than I have read in a while. I re-read a lot of the threads since last posting at a leadership retreat this past weekend and this I believe to be the absolute truth when piecing the puzzle together.

Could you imagine Gruden showing up to SEC media days next year? Saban would be playing second fiddle for once, especially if they were there the same day!

All in until proven otherwise :)

Fair, but how many people are affiliated with the AD. I doubt they will be able to trace of an anonymous board.

**So who here has a friend from Kentucky they went to the game with Saturday? I don't think that's gonna come up in any meeting.

The frenzy for Grude is growing to an almost uncontrollable fire. The video of Currie being chased by a fan is a good example. If Gruden hasn’t given an answer yet, then I have to think he will sooner rather than later. He understands that they would need to temper expectations and give Currie a chance for someone else. Mink, I think John Currie would love, absolutely love, to announce ASAP. Today. If not today, tomorrow. He's ready, raring at the bit.

But Jon Gruden held him back. Probably made it a condition of agreement that the announcement would not be made until the last game has been played. Out of respect for the sitting coaching staff. That's just a big part of who Jon Gruden is, professionally.

As for "giving Currie a chance for someone else," that would only be a factor if Currie needed to go get someone else. But he doesn't, because Jon already signed on (see an earlier post of mine for the logic train).

So the date is probably set. And it's probably next Sunday, Monday, or Tuesday. My guess would be Monday, but could be wrong.

The media is hellbent on blaming the UT fanbase for expecting to be the major program that we should be. They are determined to convince us that we should be content with coaches who have failed to live up to expectations elsewhere or have a resume so thin that it could be completed on a 3 by 5 index card.

Did Bammer "settle" for sloppy seconds or a high school coach? No.

Zook, Muschamp and McElwain may have not been successes, but they were who the gators wanted.

Ohio State and Penn State don't have do Google searches when they hire coaches.

USC made one phone call when Pete Carroll left.

Texas has been irrelevant for almost as long as Tennessee and they still get their pick of coaches.

Why is Rocky Top the only place that has to accept mediocrity?

Answer that media.

The UT administration are not dumb, and they're not blind. They know that the fan base are excited about Gruden. And they know that disappointment from not getting Jon will be a powerful, and maybe destructive, reaction. Far, far better to dissipate that reaction early than late. Do not give it time to grow further. And especially do not allow it to come just when the announcement of the real coach is being made.

They know all that.

They haven't said a word.

That's as close as you can get to proof that Gruden is still in play. He may be a lock, or it may still be a negotiation, but it is certain that he's still in play.

This is exactly my thought process. You have to manage expectations. If it is a no, you make a statement and allow the fan base a few days to"accept" the news and then bring out the new coach a few days or maybe a week later. You cant let the fan base know that Gruden turned us down by trotting out plan B or C. However, knowing TN, it will be plan Q.

The fact that no official word has been let out leads me to believe that Gruden is still in play.

I for one do not have any idea what is going on in his head. He obviously is torn with his current job and the projected insecurities, the noteriety he has from the exposure and the security and comfort it has brought him and his family weighing against his competitive nature and desire to get back into coaching. For any normal person this would be a no brainer and he would continue to ride the gravy train he has been on.

An objective analysis indicates that Jon never had sustained success while coaching and that his player development was suspect. His attraction is two fold. The dude has charisma and can definitely charm, attributes that would certainly serve him well should he choose to return to the college game. In addition, since he has been in the booth he has watched and absorbed a volume of football second to none. He is a tireless worker and obviously competitive, two characteristics that are essential for success in the coaching profession. All of this when coupled with the living hell the Vol fan base has endured over the past 15 years has caused us to believe that there is not another coach on earth other than Jon that can restore the Big Orange to its former glory.

These things have caused the assessment to be even more obscure due to the fact that our former success was achieved in another day and time. The college football landscape is far more difficult now than it was then. Nick Saban has further complicated the matter because unlike other teams in the East, Bama is our permanent opponent.

We would like to believe that the handling of our coaching search this time around is different and that we will not make the same mistakes we made in the past. Should Jon take the podium when all is said and done this will prove to be true. However, if this thing goes south, the futility of this search will rival those of the past if not exceed them.

Hope springs eternal and as others, I still have to believe that we did not screw it up again but the stamina I had at the beginning has been drained and I am just ready for this whole process to be over. If Jon is not the man, the true Volunteers will be called upon to provide the man selected the opportunity for success, a mindset that will be difficult due to the anticipation and let down we will face. We see Tennessee through rose colored glasses, a view that others obviously do not have. Reality is setting in but I for one want to make my own reality.

Do it Jon, put on your orange glasses.
