Official Gruden Thread 38

I’m still not convinced Gruden wasn’t at Calhoun’s. The physical attributes match. Would be a huge coincidence. Also, why were there multiple people saying it was him? People who are professionals. The only person saying it perhaps wasn’t is the COO, who tweeted out the apology later. The apology stated there was uncertainty. Not that he wasn’t there.

Seattle is three hours behind us. He was supposedly pictured at 4pm in Seattle (be mindful that's a 7hr flight). If he were at Calhoun's, it must have been an early lunch leaving well before 12pm our time. The apology from Calhoun's is kind of odd, yes with the verbiage used, it's also odd that he appears to have the same clothing on in the pictures taken in Seattle. My guess, he probably wasn't there.

Though many are discouraged, I found Friday’s “reservations” article and today’s “procedural motion” article to be the most reassuring nuggets thus far. Please allow this VN newcomer to explain why.

Regarding the present state of the search, there are only four possibilities:

1. Currie and Gruden are interested.
2. Currie is, but Gruden is NOT interested.
3. Currie is NOT interested, but Gruden is.
4. Currie and Gruden are NOT interested.

Now, assuming the two articles were in fact sourced by Currie, which option above seems most reasonable?

My answer is #1.

I strongly believe Currie and Gruden remain interested and simply need to delay the decision/announcement. The hang up may be money...or personnel ...or both. Regardless, Currie needed to buy time last Friday. And he needed to do so while leaving both parties an out in case talks break down. He couldn’t, obviously, say, “We’re considering Gruden’s request for more money.” He couldn’t say, “We’re pursuing LSU’s general manager to help Gruden feel comfortable.” With Gruden fever rising so rapidly, he definitely couldn’t fall back on, “I’m exploring all viable candidates.”

His best play, then, was to feign concern over Gruden’s transition to college. And it was a brilliant move. Citing the all-too-obvious “reservations” in the CBS report bought Currie time to “re-evaluate” Gruden, sent a veiled message to potential personnel that John F’n Gruden could use their services, and bought both parties an out. If talks break down now, Gruden can more convincingly say, “I love UT, man, but I’d have you in trouble quickly.” And Currie can say, “I wanted him too, but I now realize that he’s right.”

Today’s “procedural motion” report was likewise an effort to buy time, but it also addressed the heated debate over last week’s reported meeting. By framing said meeting as a mere procedural motion, Currie ended the debate, put out the fires amongst reporters, and softened fan expectations, all while buying himself time to evaluate more “plausible” candidates. The article’s true brilliance, however, is in its tone. It accomplished all the above while showing respect for Gruden as an overly qualified candidate, which countered the hit-piece tone of Friday’s article to the approval of Bob Lamonte. Finally, today’s article set the stage for even more excitement when we finally land our white whale!

If you think one of the other options better explains the two articles, I’d love to hear it.

Thanks for reading.

And...soon.

Now this makes sense. Not 100% signed. Not my source told me.

The most telling thing about Gruden being at Calhoun's IMO, is the complete lack of pictures. If Gruden was anywhere near Peyton Manning at a restaurant in Knoxville, everybody and their grandmother would be snapping pics. Remember when Gruden was in Knoxville for the SC game? Some fans snapped photos with him the night before when he was out. Now you have to think, at lunch time, in the middle of the day, Peyton Manning and Gruden together and with the abundance of smartphones. It just doesnt make logical sense that only 1 photo has surfaced of Gruden with his back turned.

Here’s a mystery: Why is there only one pic of that group at Calhoun’s? Just following your line of thought.

People were saying it was debunked because of the game on the tv in the background which started at 3:30 ET. What they forgot is that 3:30 ET would be 12:30 in Seattle. He would have had plenty of time to hop on a plane and be in Seattle when it was reported he was there. I still have a hard time believing it though. Someone would have gotten a pic of his face if he was there. We track planes, chase Currie around, etc. and nobody could get a pic of his face? I don't believe that for a second.

I enlarged the pic of Calhouns. If someone can determine what game that was from that pic, I'll eat liver and onions. I don't think they can.

The email in question may or may not be fake. What does it matter? All that is said in the message is they (UT) are preparing to sign an unprecedented contract but we need your help and we want to give you (the recipient) some information. Sounds like a pitch for money. Which is what the job of the sender of said email does. Nowhere does it say they are going to be signing the contract at the meeting. So agai, why does it matter if it is real? Please help me understand the uproar over the email.

Timeline does not work out any way you slice it. That’s assuming, however, that he was in Seattle at the time that has been stated.

I have nothing to add other than I’ve had way to many bushwhackers here in Mexico today ( yes, I am a girl so it’s ok). I sat next to a browns fan for a while,at the bar while the husband had kid duty and I drank too much.

Don’t burn me at the stake.. I’m new and have no sources but...

In the picture in Seattle, Gruden looks more “plump.” In the pictures I’ve seen this year and on MNF, he looks more “lean.”

Whose to say the picture in Seattle is real and the picture at Calhoun’s isn’t?

Why would the COO come out and say anything about a guest not being there, no matter who it is/or was? Well, unless, the COO was asked?

The Copper Cellar claims he was there. Maybe he was, maybe he wasn’t. What I find interesting is that all of this was being talked about up until halftime. At halftime, John Currie was shown on video with a fan being obnoxious. Was he just getting there? Why was going through a populated section of Neyland during halftime, if it was halftime? Was it because the power was out? Elevators weren’t working? Half of our lights were out...

Again, don’t burn me at the stake, I’m just trying to put together a timeline. If I’m wrong I’m wrong, but the time line is suspicious.

Knob Creek smoked maple is underrated.

Was at a newish restaurant last week that had an extensive bourbon/whiskey list. Had a shot (on ice) of Angel's Envy Finished Rye. Never had anything like it. Unexpected, complex, and good. $20 a shot, but worth it.

Going to check out Knob Creek Smoked Maple, sounds interesting. Thanks for the tip.

Where's Waldo?

He's been here a long time, gave people tickets this week, even replaced Faceless Arya's tickets that were screwed up in delivery with a terrace level experience. 100% for you? dunno man. Got to be close to that or it's a multi-player troll job.
I read when he posts- he's 100% vetted for me.

And to add, he has helped out VN members long before this. I can't recall the specific instance, but he made a very large --and unsolicited --contribution to a GoFundMe or similar campaign a year or two ago.

Sorry I can't pull up more than that from my aging brain, but he's a good guy, has a long track record, and I think he's legit.

Florida 247 reporting that Chip and the AD are meeting, supposedly to sign today

If UF held a press conference to announce Kelly and about 10 min. later UT announced Gruden, that would kill UF's press bump. Could it be that Currie is waiting to upstage UF, stealing their thunder?

I'm pretty sure that's the Wisconsin vs. Michigan which started at noon.
