On the "plan A or plan B" versus "plan and follow-on plan" question:

I don't know, this really all comes down to semantics which is pedantic and boring, BUT...

...in all the plans I've been a part of helping to devise and/or execute in my career, I never executed two separate plans in direct sequence. Rather, we kept adding new phases to the existing plan as we needed them. Over the decades I served, it even became formalized, so that (for instance) Phase III was always decisive combat operations, and Phase IV was establishing stability and transitioning to civil control. And then there would be a phase 4.b. when needed...and maybe 4.c...4.d....

Just kept adding to the tail end of the plan. We never had Plan A -then- Plan B ... when that terminology was used, it was Plan A -or- Plan B. Like hostile invasion of Haiti with the 82nd Airborne if the warlords don't cede power, or friendly invasion using the 10th Mountain Division if they agree to give up.

Like I said, just semantics. But it explains why his Atlanta Vol's wording led me to believe we were talking either/or, not one-then-the-next.

You may be right but as I and others have pointed out there is definitely another way to view AV's plan A and plan B comments. Gruden is plan A in both interpretations. Plan B could be the follow up candidate(s) if he declines (which he has not done yet) or it could be the coaching staff. Maybe Gruden must have his Plan B in place for him to stay as Plan A option.
Who knows at this point.

Don’t think AV presented a puzzle. “Beyond” meant that if you go past your first option, you’re not up ish creek. You have a plan in case things fall thru.

this was my take because he said he was fine with either option at this point. Meaning if Gruden falls through the backup plan will be good also

I don't think he presented a puzzle either. If he meant plan A and Plan B, he'd have said it.

Just because he didn’t use those words does not mean, unequivocally, that it is not what he meant. I think it’s fairly clear that he meant Gruden, and if not Gruden then somebody else.

I’ve been on the road all day (since 0200) driving to Wisconsin to spend Thanksgiving with family. I haven’t been able to keep up. Are we getting Gruden or nah?

The story I'm hearing is that the daddy rabbit boosters have embarked on a true long term plan to resurrect the program. A twenty year plan. Gruden is coming. His staff will incude many ex vols. Tee is being courted as a "Head coach in waiting". One of the major reasons for the delay in announcing Gruden is the desire to allow Tee, Dale Jones and others to finish their seasons without the distractions of being questioned about Tennessee.

Remember, when and if Gruden is announced it will be a media circus. It will be one of the top ten biggest football stories of the year in college and the NFL. When a story is this big everybody involved, and there are a lot of them, wants the timing of the announcement to be optimized for the greatest impact on the program. It will be the story that dominates the college football off season.

I hate to use cliches but tifwiw.

Ok I am full Gruden but here is what I don't understand about this. When has a head coach been named along with all of his assistants? If it is Gruden then why not just announce it and then let the assistants follow in at a later time (when their season is over etc...)

When you go to a Christmas party does everyone walk in at once. No people filter in as it gets started.

With that being said.

SOON

Couldn’t this be resolved by Gruden just saying, “my first order of business will be to recruit and then I will begin assembling a staff”?

Most everyone’s season is over this week, pretty typical for coaches to start moving around after that.

This week is a big recruiting weekend for us, lots of officials from our major commits or targets... doesn’t make sense not to have a hire made before then?

We can certainly agree to disagree. However, as I said earlier, if you believe that ink is dry as I do as well as others here, you read it very differently. If AV knows ink is dry he means it very differently than A or B.

Kiffin's greatest obstacle is Kiffin.

Exactly..he's one of those people who could be so much better if he could ever get out of his own way. He is his own worst enemy. Dude can coach, recruit and develop QB's whether people like him or not. I give him full props for that.

Good grief. I’ve been around since 2012 on this train and I don’t remember too many posts being dissected like AVs today. It wasn’t that complicated and I doubt he knew we would read into every word he wrote. Basically chill out. Quit chasing planes. They won’t be meeting at Calhoun’s to do a big time deal. And they are working on their top plan with a plan either to follow that or as a back-up. But prob as a back up. And who wouldn’t have a back up just in case? It’s not that difficult. And not that shocking

Yep, you and SFD could absolutely have the right of it.

Some day, we'll know. Unless we don't. Then we never will. Unless later we do, at which point we'll know. You know?

Currie didn’t come into this Gruden or bust. While Gruden would be the hire that unites this fan base, he’s not the only person that would win here. And if Currie is smart, he has other options on deck if Gruden won’t say yes.

Funny. I don't remember my first game.

Mine was in Knoxville against the gators. Think maybe 94. Me and 3 other buddies from Ooltewah high school went by ourselves. Was like a right of passage. Shane Matthews was the QB for Florida and we blew their doors off. Behind us were a few smoking hot girls who were drunk and falling all over us.. Good times .... Good times.
