And ... Currie is not going to troll/tease this fanbase with Gruden injections while he is getting someone else. He has got to still be in play. Now Currie may be talking with other candidates to gauge interest, but again, he has too much to lose for it to come out that he used Gruden smoke to fool us. Let's be sensible.

Yeah, Currie wouldn't be doing his job if he wasn't talking to other candidates. He likely needs 4-5 names lined up that he can jump into discussions with immediately if the Gruden thing truly falls apart (assuming it hasn't already or isn't already inked).

I think we are waiting out of respect to the current team and coaches. Give the seniors their final home game instead of letting the excitement be around gruden.

Also gruden has endorsements that he may have to cut, right? That might take some time to get out of contracts and tieup other loose ends before he accepts. JMO.

I don't really think Currie gives a damn what this fanbase thinks of the coaching search. If he caved to fan pressure Butch would've been fired after UGA.

All that matters is that his hire wins games. Everything from today's date to the first game next year is irrelevant in the grand scheme of things.

How do you think a lot of this smoke got started?

You live in the message board world, so you think there is a lot of smoke. 90% or more of fans wouldn't say there's a ton of smoke with Gruden right now. They would say he's a candidate and it would be cool to land him but it's highly unlikely.

Yes, and he isn't talking to a Satterfield or Durkin right now... He's talking to a Stoops, Jimbo, Patterson, Peterson, or NFL guy.

He's smart enough to know that using Gruden as a smokescreen is a bad idea. There's just no need for that. It's easy enough to cover your tracks without using Tennessee's Dream Coach 2000™ as a diversion.

Pat Forde mentioned Mike Norvell and Jeff Brohm as realistic candidates to replace Butch.

Either the entire national media is clueless or we are delusional.

Let's see how it goes.

Guys - Butch Jones is no longer coaching on game day. Enjoy the moment no matter what happens. Breathe in the fresh air and remove the albatross from your shoulders. It's a really good day.

This leads to a much better HC by all appearances. May not be Gruden, but hopefully a top guy that can create some blowback against the media hounds by winning big. Then it will be our turn for Vol fans to do their things in social media to make their lives miserable.

I think we got another long week ahead of us before any of us is going to know who the next HC is going to be. So pace yourself its going to be a wild ride through Thanksgiving!

You underestimate how quickly this stuff gets to Facebook and real life discussions. A former coworker of mine texted me out of the blue two days ago to ask if I thought Gruden was the next coach. She has probably never posted on a message board in her life.

Bignewt's for the record statement:

I want Grudes here. I think it would be amazing, he would kill it as his work ethic and energy is well documented. I just believe zero insiders on anonymous message boards who either have bad motives or hear handed down info much like the telephone game.

Do i believe he is our next coach? Most likely not. Do i believe we get a good/great hire? I sincerely do. Who will it be? Right now no clue as that is how the AD is playing it. Is it fun to read all the ridiculous rumors? Of course but i keep it all at arm's reach. I was all in in 2012 now i know better.

Go Vols give dem corn dog tigers hell!

I used to value your opinion until you said you thought Kasy Rogers would be our head coach. :)

What can he do? I don't think he's actively floating Gruden's name but you could convince me some of the boosters are. He can't shut anything down until a hire is made. All this "smoke" is booster and fan created. Doesn't mean it's more or less likely Gruden is the actual hire - but Currie isn't leaking anything. And I doubt very much he's paying much attention to what the fans think or expect.

I didn't say no one thinks Gruden is a candidate. The national media are talking about that; but they're not talking about it because of message boards, they're talking about it because TFP published an article about it.

Such a small, small percentage of fans are on message boards. I highly doubt Currie sat down and came up with a message board misinformation strategy.

Yes, he would. Not necessarily only a message board strategy but the misinformation strategy would 100% include message boards/twitter. Currie would know that some details are going to make it out, leaks happen. So you get out ahead of them.

There's a lot of flaws in Larry's conclusions imo.

I think LWS is a little similar to me. There’s a lot of prominent media folks (Albright? Staples? Dodd?) screaming in your face that Gruden isn’t coming. Plus if the rumors are true, we are paying him all that money and giving him everything he wants and he still hasn’t accepted yet, seems logical at this point to think he’s not coming.

But we will see. The rumors aren’t dying.

I respect Larry despite his negativity. Wts, the "amount of time" comment is short-sighted.
Could be out of respect to current coaches.
Could be because it's a life changing event for his entire family. Gruden doesn’t need the money. If I were him, I would take every moment allowed to think it through.

Don't forget we have the logistics of his MNF gig to get around. We don't know how that would affect things.

Looks like the RF is starting to jump on the Gruden train a little. :)

Nothing has changed here.
The only change is you seeing the RF for yourself instead of reading about it from rednecks over there.

Edit: not calling all in the FF rednecks, some of my favorites are there. Just those certain few.

Currie isn't orchestrating any kind of message board strategy himself. But Tennessee almost certainly employs a PR firm that either has its own reputation management/social media management division or it subcontracts to a company that handles those sorts of things.

Reddit is manipulated by those firms every day.

I actually don’t think people would believe Currie even if he came out and said Gruden isn’t a candidate. A new rumor would crop up here or on twitter saying he was creating a diversion for sOme reason or another while they worked out kinks. The rumors won’t die until the next coach is named.
