You can't control the first altogether, I agree. And you would still have some die hards that hold on until you hire PJ Fleck. Here's the thing: if Gruden comes out and says he's not interested in the job, people will point to Saban and Alabama and say he's just playing coy.
Currie can't come out and say they're not going after Gruden. That would be weird and a total break of protocol. He also can't say they were turned down because the first question the next coach will be the same old "how does it feel to be the second choice?" question.
So the only way there's a clean break is something like the CBS article - which everyone here immediately laughed at and dismissed. Lol.
He's also not some new phenomenon we took half a week to get to know after firing a coach and we can't get up. It wouldn't take much effort to see through "We re not sure he's the best fit".
The interesting angle is Gruden himself. Loves UT, Johnny, Peyton, Charles Davis, (countless others affiliated with UT). His wife's family is in Orange neck Central, his son is attending the school. Im not sure how his ego and or pride out weighs all that.
But there's enough out there to at least not question UTs desire and effort to pull it off. You could add to that pretty easy as well through the media and move on to whoever.
