lol I just don't get it. Everyone quits so easily around here. One rumor of bad news and they fall apart. One rumor of good news and we're calling it trolling or lies.

Maybe Gruden won't be the coach, maybe he did say no and we'll end up with Brohm or Bobo or Connor McGoogleman but all we're going on now is what exactly? A jimmy hyams tweet? JAV post? Yeah, I'll wait to call everyone trolls and liars.

I stand with you. We ain't dead yet.

It's not one rumor. You've got "insiders" and media saying it's not happening. Or we can believe others with unnamed sources who would have breached confidence at the highest level to leak the information that he's going to take the job.

I do fault Gruden a bit for letting this linger like it has, even to the point of "never say never" and "Rocky Top, I love that song" in the midst of it all.

Were there any legitimate people suggesting he signed anything Wednesday night? I honestly haven't seen it. All I've seen was that they made the official offer.

I know we're all assuming Hubbs was at the airport to see if Gruden got off the plane but I don't think that's right. To me, he and Reed were there to see if any of the boosters got off the plane. So they would know if the trip down to Tampa was legit at all.

Do you think the UT brass lets it be known that an official offer was made, if they knew it would be turned down? Gruden had already signed a MOU, IMO, and the kinks had been worked out by the time the official offer was made. It became official because they knew he would accept it.

I’m telling y’all...LWS was right that he said no twice; however, we went a third time with another offer (I’m wondering if this is where Blackburn came into play). He said yes on the 3rd offer and that occurred on Wednesday. Now, the prior 2 denials will leak to settle all the smoke, so they can buy time until after the Vandy game.

Why is it so easy to believe negative news but often difficult to believe good news?

You're taking the "bad" news and completely re-framing it to fit what you believe or hope to be true.

I see a couple of scenarios here:

1. You're right and we have an agreement in place with Gruden, but we have to revert to some covert conspiracy tactics to distract people and trick them into thinking we're not getting Gruden because we want to control the way announcement goes down (am I getting the theory right?);

or

2. Gruden is already ridiculously wealthy, has any number of attractive job opportunities to choose from, and just doesn't want to deal with all the insanity involved in being a college coach.

I know a lot of people on here will disagree with me, but I suspect that the simpler explanation is closer to the truth.

Without juicy grumors, and having no other actual information coming from anywhere... where’s the fun factor?

I'm with you.
Respected posters come out and say: "There's a good shot Gruden is the next coach at UT".

Volnation: "That's a bunch of hogwash. He was never coming here. Pipe dream. Those posters are FOS".

Same Insiders: "He said no, He isn't coming. Time to move on."

Volnation: "Shut it down, the experts have spoken"

When the insiders have positive news they're all FOS. When they have negative news, they're info is solid.

I go back to the lottery comparison.

The night before a huge drawing, I will buy a ticket. It’s fun as hell to dream, it sucks I only got one number right.

Within 1 minute I am back to reality.

This is the Gruden fantasy wrapped up for me.

A JAV post without Jennings inexplicably coming back, a sudden burst of celebration, a few other player tweets and the Gruden comments on Seattle station(unprovoked) is worthy to call it quits. But those things didn't happen in 2012. Not even close to anything similar. 2012 was message board rumors. it was shot down time and time again. it's not this time. what a weird coaching search and nothing is more Tennessee Vol than this search

Anyone expecting an announcement before the end of the regular season was living in fantasy land. It's just not done in college football. It was like pulling teeth to get Currie and the power players at UT to even fire Butch before the season. Remember that Hyams story had this detail: "Butch was given the opportunity to coach out the last two games, he rejected it." If Currie had been planning on Gruden that entire time, it's clear he would have waited for Butch to finish the season until he announced Gruden. As fans, we get really impatient because we want change, but Currie and his staff have a reputation to uphold. You don't announce hires when you still have a full staff even if the head coach is an interim. It just doesn't happen.

So it may very well be that Gruden has agreed or is still considering UT. Maybe, UT has moved on to other options. If those other options are Mullen or Patterson, then we should all be very happy. Any of this Mullen hate on here is absolutely ridiculous. He would be a home run hire. You'll see multiple teams fighting over him once silly season really starts. I've been in here all day, every day, and I need to heed my own advice: Take a deep breath and let this process play out. We've got the money, the talent base, and the facilities. We're not going to dip down into that bottom tier.

Ah what a ride! Once again, if Gruden doesn't come, it wasn't for UT not trying. Hopefully, the hire doesn't end up like last time.

If Gruden isn’t coming, please, please, do not hire Dan Mullen. Would mean 8-4 to 8-3 forever. We can do better!!!

Throw the Gruden money at Peterson. Go get Frost. Do not take no for an answer! We are settling if we hire Mullen. Heck, I’d rather have Schiano

Save us Gruden!

If all this was false, then ATL vol/JAV, and others don't know squat, and there is not a single insider on this circus of a board...
I still think we offered a huge contract to Gruden ...
This place goes from "it's done" just a matter of when he is announced and plane tracking to "Gruden was never in play"? I have a hard time believing that. TOO many people were sure this was happening for there not be some substance to it.
If we find out this was all BS, then Gruden is a self-absorbed ego maniac who loves the attention and will not be thought of or cared about very much moving forward in the UT community overall. He had a chance to squash this and didn't.
If BS, then Currie better trot out another Big name or his name will be MUD.

A part of me still thinks Gruden is in play and folks saw how close this was to breaking prematurely and were instructed to push it off.
What are the former players that were so excited saying this morning?

Please remind me who your source is, if you can. I do want to believe you. I just cannot make myself do it.

Well if that's the way they are running things, I don't have a ton of confidence they get this right. My first question to Gruden would be "Are we wasting our time?". He's been in knoxville multiple times and I refuse to believe that there hasn't been detailed discussions on this. I also, believe Peyton has been involved as well as Fulmer. I just don't think this has been handled the way it's being portrayed. This is all conjecture on my part and maybe I give the Currie and company way too much credit and I could be dead wrong.

No I think you are right. It’s laughable that this was only a recruiting trip. You don’t bring a whole contingent of boosters to Tampa if you don’t know for a fact that you have a chance at getting him to commit/sign or whatever. I would bet money that Gruden said he was interested and there were enough talks to think that there was a good chance of him signing all before this trip.

If the Insiders have failed us, time to get Miss Cleo on the phone.

I don’t think it was ever an insider issue. I think Gruden really mulled it over hard. He just did what he always does- left us at the prom for the chick that puts out easiest (ESPN).

They haven't let anything be known. There are leaks because the money guys can keep their mouths shut. Also, a lot of the leaks come from people who work in the airline industry. This is where Trey Wallace has made some in-roads, imo.

He has not signed anything. No one of substance has suggested otherwise. I don't know that's he's turned us down yet either though. But the early reports are not positive.

On November 17, 2011, news broke that Urban Meyer had been hired at OSU. He came out and denied the report.

On November 28, it was announced that in fact he was going to be the coach at OSU.

I’ve held strong that if we go past Monday with Gruden, it’s not happening. But, the Meyer parallel is the closest thing we have to this type of hire.

I do think gruden turned us down for the final time last night. But.... what’s the saying? “Never say never about nothin”

I think he had an exact reason to say this. He said no twice to us (3 if you count 5 years ago)...we kept coming until he said yes.

Love the idea of going 8-3.
