In The Hunt for Red October, in order to “grab the boat” without the Russians (media/internet sleuths/other programs) figuring it out, the commanders of the Dallas (Tennessee personnel) and the Red Oktober (Gruden) had to orchestrate an illusion (smokescreen) for all those who wanted to know (see above), but were not “in the know” (boosters/admin/insiders) that there was conflict instead of cooperation. Several obstacles presented both the crews of the Dallas and Red October that could have blown the deal if not for the quick thinking and action of the Dallas crew to maintain the illusion, if not make it more believable, and hold the deal together. All hands on deck if you will. The job was still accomplished, the Americans (Tennessee) got the Red October (Gruden) and the Russians were left wondering “how did this happen?” The Red October (Gruden) sailed to the safe confines of the Patuxent River (Neyland Stadium) where it’s potential would finally be realized and known to all that worked so hard to “grab the boat” and bring peace to VolNation!

Gruden wouldn’t have gone to all the trouble to meet with Currie numerous times if he wasn’t seriously interested in the UT job.

I think the deal is done. Just waiting for it to be finalized.
