And why do they play so hard for him? And how was he able to have this recruiting class lined up?

I said a couple of weeks ago when this mess started, if these stories are true, shame on him. But also shame on these people for waiting til now to speak out. I don't buy the argument that they had something to lose while he was still coach. Hogwash! They were already done and had nothing to lose.

It's pretty weak on their part to wait til now to speak out. Could've saved the program more trouble and perhaps kept other players from having to go through the same thing.

Disgruntled people may have a legit complaint, but they need to be questioned fairly on their motive and veracity. I am no Butch backer, but some things don't make sense. I do think he used some very questionable bully tactics on folks who crossed him and is getting some blowback now, but a lot of it is just a bunch of whiners shooting at an easy target that has no defenders left. If these shows are going to put people on, they need to grill them and ask tough questions, but instead they are just playing to a pissed off audience for viewers and clicks.

If it is truly confirmed that Currie is contacting recruits, he definitely has someone already locked up, or is very sure of his plan B and C...
You don't have the dang AD contacting recruits unless something is super solid... too much bad press and fallout if things go sideways...

Actually it’s protocol and has happened with all of our prior searches.

Falling on the sword. He’s getting let go.

Gotcha. Seems a bit odd still. Hey coach I know I'm known for QBs too and we lost our starter so I'm going to make you scape goat....guess he wants a recruiting spot for his pupil Craig.... I'm going to stay in my happy place though and say It's happening lol

Bowles did what he thought was right (reporting what he thought was a rape) and butch called him a traitor for it. Turned the team against him. A truly heinous act on butch’s part.

OR he told him he would be “viewed” as a traitor and took steps to protect him. I’m going with that, specially since my lasting image of Bowles is him hugging Butch on the sideline during the bowl game. Doesn’t actually jibe with yours. :dunno:

Not sure what to think RE: Marlin Lane.

On one hand, we all know butch ran kids off the team.

On the other, if he had marlin “threaten lives”, that is a pretty serious crime

I listened to part of that interview. Marlin said that he had fun at UT his first two years. Then when Butch came, it was all downhill. If the play under Dooley was fun to him, then there isn't much more to say. Maybe Butch was harder on them, but that was telling to me.

Who said he was contacted by Gruden?

Only talk of that I’ve seen of Gruden reaching out to former Vols is Brice. He didn’t name sanders.

Yes i would trust drae more than Marlin but it's also pretty obvious there was more than meets the eye in that story. That girl caused a big mess and seems shady

But it’s not about the girl. It’s about how butch treated Drae. Drae tried to do what he thought was right and butch turned the team against him. From what I remember he called him a traitor and recruited some of the other players to attack him/intimidate him. Butch is garbage

It just seems odd that he would be contacting so many former Vols about a staff. With no offense, I’m sure he would want the best staff possible, and I’m to believe it’s conveniently made up of all former Vols?

Randy Sanders?

I think he could be asking them questions about coaching at UT, not necessarily about being on his coaching staff.

Anybody that's ever played football knows coaches can be pretty heated people sometimes. We saw Butch blow up at refs tons of times on live TV to the point I thought he was gonna bust a vein in his neck. Who knows how he acts behind closed doors. Some kids are sensitive to stuff like that and don't react well.

If he were winning this would be called discipline. Since he's not, it's called abuse.

The best coaches relay their anger to their players in a way that effectively gets their point across. Some kids need that fire, some kids need a one on one conversation behind closed doors. The key is to know and understand your players. The coaches that fail tend to only do it their way and lose half their team somewhere along the way. I'm guessing Bufch falls into this category.

Get you a man that can do both.

Well said.

You are assuming that Bowles did what he thought was right, which is fair enough to presume but I’m not sure has been established. In any case, the whole situation is a mess, and while I can understand Drae’s actions (and place far more blame on the others involved, given the context in which Drae became involved—i.e., in the immediate aftermath), I can also understand the flip side of that, especially assuming the girl was lying (which seems likely, though the fact that the DA chose to charge the case does give me pause for sure). (Even if the girl wasn’t lying, it certainly would look like she was to a teammate who knew she’d already been lying to Drae about banging AJ.)

IMO no way Tee Martin could tell JG no. Come back to your alma mater, continue to learn under Gruden and essentially the unofficial coach in waiting when that time comes.

John Currie better be in a black luxury car sitting outside of BOA stadium right now, documents in hand waiting for this game to end. Gruden walks out approaching the car, window cracks to show Currie flashing his devilish smile. "You ready to be back in this stadium in 10 months as The Head Coach of the University of Tennessee?" Pen to paper, deal done and in the pilot jet back to Knoxville tomorrow to make it official.

SIAP

In the Gruden thread, someone posted that a question was asked to JAV on TOS. Which is more likely, Kelly to UF or Gruden to TN? JAV responded Gruden to TN.

I can’t carry the post over since I’m on mobile. I believe it was in page 75 or something. Figure Ron would have posted it here already. You’re slacking Ron!!!

From everything I’ve seen about Bowles there’s no reason to not believe he didn’t have the best of intentions. It was a mess for sure and just another story that painted butch in a bad light. One of many. I’ve seen and heard enough about butch to come to the conclusion that he’s a bad dude.
