Recruiting Forum Football Talk XLIII

With Currie operating in the shadows, here’s what the VolQuest.com crew has heard from various sources in the coaching world on the start of Tennessee’s search…

* First things first on Jon Gruden. The #GRUMORS aren’t going away, but most of the buzz in the coaching world is that Gruden, if he chooses to decline a purported paycut at ESPN, is headed back to the Tampa Bay Bucs. But everyone knows that Gruden will play both sides of the fence and on top of the fence moving forward. He hasn't and will never rule anything out.

* Virginia Tech coach Justin Fuente has taken a couple tough losses the last two weeks, but he’s still an excellent coach and a big name candidate for Tennessee. However, the early scuttle is that Fuente prefers to stay at Va. Tech right now.

* Oregon’s Willie Taggart has legitimate interest in Tennessee, but sources say he much prefers to get back to the Sunshine State. With UF an unlikely destination right now, Taggart could be circling FSU if Jimbo Fisher opts to leave town. Still, it's safe to say that Taggart has made some inquires about the Tennessee job, as he would love to be back in the South somewhere.

* Florida got a jumpstart on Tennessee, but the Vols have gotten ahead of Texas A&M and Arkansas, as both those positions currently remain in limbo. If Kevin Sumlin gets fired, A&M is going to pay big bucks, with Dan Mullen and James Franklin two potential targets. Some feel that Sumlin will sit out a year if he's let go and not pursue his next job right now.

* Word is Mullen wants back at Florida, but the longtime coach at Mississippi State is intrigued by Tennessee. Although Scott Frost and Chip Kelly are seemingly the favorites at UF, there will still be plenty of competition for Mullen, as A&M and Nebraska are possible landing spots, too.

* Memphis head coach Mike Norvell is definitely interested in the Tennessee opening. The up-and-coming head coach has ties to Arkansas and Ole Miss, but Tennessee is easily the best job of the bunch.

* One name not on our hot board who purportedly has expressed interest in Tennessee’s opening? Mike Leach. The Washington State interviewed for the position in 2008. Leach could be an odd fit/marriage personality wise with Currie at Tennessee. Remember this about Leach: He's getting a new boss at Washington State and is losing his quarterback.

* While Currie didn’t outline a criteria for Tennessee’s next coach, most believe the Vols will hire a current head coach. Still, Ohio State DC Greg Schiano is a name to watch. There’s real interest there, and a tie with agent Jimmy Sexton. Schiano has worked hard to rebuild his image since his time at Tampa and is looking for a big head coaching gig. He would also be a similar off-the-wall hire that Currie made with Bruce Weber back in 2012.

It sure as heck looks like it to me. Let's see how we perform the last two games without Butch keeping him restrained.
It’s not on shoop for the team being soft. We’re going to keep getting pushed around. S&C program is terrible. I’m more interested in seeing if scott’s playcalling gets better all of a sudden

Who is bending over backwards? I heard some generalized pleasantries from Currie and Hoke about Jones. That's about it.

There's also the possibility that Jones is actually a good man and we're hearing from butthurt people with axes to grind about how awful he is/was.

I actually have an alternate theory, Jones is a really good man, and painfully loyal friend to HIS peeps, and a totally vindictive douche to anybody that gets crossways with him.

I tried to let you guys know when this happened.

Not only did he scout him but he met with him directly and asked him if he would be interested in the job.

Glad it's finally out there.

Bruin says no way, didnt happen.

The guys who get the real e-cred are the ones who were and remained skeptical of CBJ from day one, essentially.

Probably the only folks who can claim this are the ones that were just so upset it wasn't Gruden. Beyond that, with the early 2014 commitments, and a couple of on field results in 2013, it would have been difficult to not have at least some iota of buy in.

Interesting. There was a poster in the Gruden thread that was full Gruden in 2012 and this time around wasn’t entertaining it. He mentioned a week or two back that UT went to a UCF game to scout Frost. He has connections in UT media and VFLs (personal friends with Ainge). This article you just posted Gives some credence to him as a poster.

Oh, and just today he said this about Gruden:

I didn't realize how true the ESPN cutbacks were until this weekend.

I have full on known he either has or is in the process of buying a home here. I cannot post but I have seen a picture of him and others at a personal friends home that is for sale (wish I could afford it could park my boat at home instead of at the marina lol).

Just a lot of smoke for the narrative to have no veracity. Have been around a lot of things like this and using context clues and circumstantial things NOW coupled with "real" media people saying what they are gives me hope it could happen.

The people that make it possible for me to attend "Meet and Greets" and press conferences, practices etc... also said "You really want to meet Gruden huh?" last night. The smoke is everywhere but is it just that, smoke? Starting to think not.

I still refuse to believe its Gruden, i was full bore back in the day and it took my heart awhile to recover. At this point im full blown Mullen, and possibly support him even over Gruden as a hire. In my eyes a guy whos developed Alex Smith, Tebow, Dak and Fitzgerald and has been active in the SEC the last nine years is more intriguing as a long term quality hire than Gruden. I think Gruden has a higher ceiling but a lower floor than Mullen. What mullen has done at MST is as good or better than what Franklin did at Vandy (MST is historically the 12th best team in the SEC) Also just imagine what the dude could do with a school thats actually capable of luring top recruits. In his 9 years at MST, as good as hes been, theyve only averaged 28th in the nation and 10th in the SEC as far as recruiting rankings. While UT has averaged 12th and 5th in the same time period and hes vastly exceeded the production UT has had in that time period, all while playing in the toughest division in all of football. Hes peaked there, he needs a bigger stage and id be stoked if he came here.

Meh..

Simply not buying Currie went to game and met with a candidate on site. No shot that happened. Maybe he met in some obscure hotel but not at the game. that's dumb

No one said he "met" with Frost. In fact, I am not sure that he can.

The only thing reported is that he attended the game in Cincinnati because it was our bye week. It's very believable.

I think he lost quite a few people after UF 2013 and especially Vandy 2013.

A few more gave up on him after UF 2014.

Guys I’ve held string and haven’t bought into gruden this time. Was so disappointed when we trotted butch out there in 2012.

The smoke is so insane though... I might just have to inhale

I'm not arguing, but I think it's on the entire staff if the S&C program is as bad as what we read on here. Granted, it ultimately falls on Butch, but they're pretty much all complicit.

Personally, if it is as bad as reported, both coordinators deserve just about as much blame as Butch.

Who's the GoInUponATuesday poster in the Gruden thread that many over seem to like? He has said that the deal is done. Sounds trollish to me.

He met with Frost, from my understanding, at the airport in Cincinnati.

Currie assumed we were looking at a 7 or 8 win season this year which would have been enough to justify keeping Butch another year. He was not going to fire Butch without having a coach that he liked lined up. Now, the season went so bad that he didn't have a choice, but if Butch had won 7 games as expected, the only way Currie was going to make a move was if he KNEW he could upgrade.
