Using Gruden as a smokescreen is dangerous territory.

I think it's more likely to be the other way around. Gruden is the guy and all the other names are designed to keep the charade of a coaching search up.

Why is it dangerous? I think he asked and JG said no thank you. Then, I think Currie said ok, but please don't announce that you're not interested yet. I have someone else on the hook.

To me, it is dangerous to think you have him, because I don't think other big names would be willing to wait until JG decided. I really have no idea.

Fair point. I could see a lot of excitement. But still, parents keep a lot of these kids grounded and they would still want some time to get to know a coach and make sure it was a good fit, especially any that are already committed elsewhere.

Agreed. I think we'd see the class move into the top 10 with Gruden locking down the top guys already committed, adding Mays, and then a handful of other 4*s/maybe an extra 5* or two.

If Currie is contacting a recruit at that level, you know he has contacted Cade's family and others...
If this Gruden thing actually happens, I bet he sells recruits the fact that Peyton will be a regular "consultant" to QBs and the offense... another pull.

It's dangerous because the fanbase will be hugely disappointed if they're led to believe Gruden is the guy only for it to be some mundane hire. Puts the new guy in a rough spot right away.

The only person Gruden could/should be a smokescreen for is someone like John Harbaugh.

I don't think Gruden is the recruiting slam dunk everybody thinks he is. He does seem like a personable guy, and everybody knows him, but negative recruiting somebody who has been out of coaching for 10 years is not going to be that difficult.

I'm full Grude. Mullen, while he would probably be a really good hire, would feel like a letdown compared to the Grude.

Trust me, id be excited as all get out if it was the Grude, hell i even changed my Clan tag on xbox live to "GRUD" lol But i cant let my heart get into it again like i did the first time. I was like a Jehovas witness at work and everywhere else i could talk football. Roaming from office to office asking people if they had a few moments to discuss our orange savior, John Gruden. "Here's a pamphlet on what JG can do for you, repent now and accept him or be damned to football purgatory forever!"

Basilio:

"I was calling it pure fantasy last week. I talked to some people and now there's some real smoke there."

Paraphrasing.

There is no doubt in my mind there is smoke. I have never thought he would take it and don't now but I think he has a reason now to make it appear more possible. He could be leveraging with espn or more likely with Tampa. Letting them think he is about to take our job might force their hand there.

Gruden isn't accepting the job alone. He would have a killer staff.

A lil more backstory on that, since I don't think its been posted in here.

OLEVOLFAN is the guy that accurately predicted/"broke" the Butch jones firing in the middle of last week (for Sunday). Could've just got lucky. Last week, he claims Jones knew and that his office was going to be packed during the Mizzou game.

Anyways, the other part of this is goingupitnotuesday (or whatever his name is). He does indeed work out of Nashville and may be right on calling OLEVOLFAN out. tuesday claims to be friends with Tee Martin (they follow each other on instagram), along with a mutual friend they have, DJ Wootson of Titus Young Real Estate (also based out of Nashville).

tuesday's not a troll. He's been posting for a while but had been skeptical that Gruden would come here. He also claimed to know Tee will before this next part. He comes along and says he has a text from Tee. Gruden's people were gauging interest from Tee about being OC here. Tee declined because he wants to be a head coach soon.

Now here's where it gets dicey, and why I don't believe it. Wootson tells tuesday that Tee was approached a second time, this time offered "head coach in waiting". Supposedly Casey Clausen was also offered a position.

TIFWIW, with a huge grain of salt. tuesday's not a troll, but he may be an attention whore like boro. He's maintained all this time, since from the texts from Tee and Wootson, that he is 150% sure Gruden is coming here.

I don't have anything against Tuesday. But I think your last paragraph sums it up IMO. Tuesday posted in the Gruden thread a lot. But never inside info. Just general comments. Now he did say in the past he was friends with Tee. But two or three weeks ago he comes out with this bombshell.

If he had been posting tidbits of info from Tee all along I would be more likely to buy it. Again not calling him a liar. And I don't think he's a trill at all. I was just surprised how the info came from him I guess.

He's still been a visible presence in the sport, though.

We'll be competing for #1 classes after his first year here.

I see where you are going with this, but a simple rebuttal would be he has been studying the game and top players coming out of high school for years. He knows the game in and out at the NFL level, why wouldn't he know how to at the college level. He will not come here unless he is surrounded by top tier assistants who will recruit and sell the idea as well. He is not butch and will let them do their jobs and not micromanage.

Majority of 5 stars view college as a stepping stone for their ultimate desire- a NFL career. Gruden has the ring and I am sure he would display it proudly during visits. Saban can't negative recruit that.

My take on Butch is that he is probably sincerely interested in and caring towards players unless someone CROSSES HIM! Then he goes full vendetta/petty/little-man syndrome. I think this would apply to media as well, and probably explains his ejection of a coach here or there. We all thought "maybe some impropriety," but maybe someone just said, "look, we have to do something different." And maybe Butch said, "That's it, get out."

Gruden would have the Josh Rosens and Jacob Easons of the world lining up to play for him.

Why play for Jim Chaney or Jim Mora or whoever the hell is OC at Bama when you can play for a guy who has worked hands-on with Andrew Luck, Cam Newton, Marcus Mariota, Jameis Winston, etc.?

People still don't understand the enormity of Gruden.

If Chip Kelly does go to UF I wonder how much the racism accusations at Philly will be used against him in recruiting? The Eagles players hated him.
